AIL "Alpine Injured List"

Sorry to hear about these additional injuries to our alpine brothers and sisters...no guarantee I could have avoided this injury if I was on two planks instead of one but certainly the torque, force and twisting imparted on my leg was amplified through my hardboot. Good news so far is that the left leg fibula and tibia bones and ankle have not displaced and are stable-2 more weeks go back for another picture show..,may dodge surgery and casting. My right shoulder badly swollen, no obvious ac joint separation. possible break from sternum to clavicle, really hard to see on xray. Need a new POC..havent seen my Proteus yet so no idea if it is ok. May have cracked my Deeluxe shell and heel after further inspection. For now, aircast and crutches and a sparkly upbeat attitude. I hope everyone carves a couple trenches at MCC for the fallen.

Keep us updated on your recovery.

Wow!  Still moving slow...feel like I'm listing to port when walking!.... but a little less pain every day....been to the Chiropractor 3x and that has really helped.

Got some new pain today - The Hospital Bill Showed Up!   Over $20,000!! for all services......not sure that includes the Air Transport!  Yikes!!    Hopefully my Workers Comp will cover it all!!

Got the good news yesterday that will not need hardware and surgery on the fib and tib. Doc says that if he didn't know about the fractures, initial looks at images don't reflect damage. Can move away from crutches, start weight bearing and 2-3 weeks, get rid of the aircast and move towards normal shoe. Celebrated by getting a K168. LFG!!!!!

Alpine Injured Update~

1st day back after a month of being sidelined from reckless skier  knocking me unconscious/unresponsive and airlifted to hospital Jan.19th..........

Was cleared by Doc. on Fri. for work on the ski hill but groomers only.

I decided I try to get back on the horse and went up today Sun. around noon as Ikon passes were all blacked out this weekend thinking it would be much less crowded.

It was less crowded, for a weekend.... But Still felt Crowded to me.  Rode the Funitel lift up to high camp and then boarded down to the Gold Coast lift.

It all felt weird like the very 1st day of the season....  Getting my board on and then through the lift line I felt like a beginner as nothing seemed or felt right?  Got on the chair packed in with 5 others, Ugh! but got off aok... but it's like the body knew what to do but my mind wasn't/couldn't remember I'd done this a gazillon times before.

With difficulty I finally got rear foot into my SW SI"s and took off down the easy run.  Again my body made some partial from memory movements but my mind was  not coming along for the ride!  I slid and skided down the run  but it was like I didn't know how to Drive the board...I was just along for the ride.  This is not going so well i thought, so I aimed for the shortest route back to the mid Mtn. Funitel lift.

I made it back to the Funitel lift without getting hit or falling.....but I Was Done mentally and physically!   I rode the Funitel back down to the village.

Wow....that was alot harder than I thought it was going to be!

I'll try again Tues. and hope for better results!!

Slow and steady. The goal is to ride for years into the future, not like this is your last season. Patience will yield great results.

@barryjYour brain got all shook up. Lots of nerve cells will have been stretched, some torn. You are probably finding that other tasks that require concentration or holding a train of thought difficult. Full recovery will not happen overnight. Patience is necessary, but just like the ice hockey player in the video I linked to you, some retraining of your brain may be needed. Like Corey wisely noted, play the long game.

Thanks for the input and advice guys......I appreciate it.

I guess I was thinking since I've been on the sidelines over 4 weeks.....and did a 40 mile road bike ride Sat. the day before with no issues or problems...   (and one the week before), that getting back on the board wouldn't be.... as difficult as I found it to be!

I'll give the long game another go and we will see........ maybe I'll get a couple of runs in!

For us guys who thrive on serious activity,  down time, or less than optimal up time is REALLY, REALLY frustrating but we must occasionally chill a little for better days ahead.
Barry, you WILL be back!

Yeah......being sidelined from an aspect of my job here at a destination resort for over a month has been a struggle!

I recall tales of (younger) guys who got pretty seriously injured doing some sporting activity. They heal up and get back on that horse.

I, on the other hand am pretty sissy. I have never been seriously injured and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm afraid if I ever got seriously hurt snowboarding, I may just quit.

That is why my primary strategy is to avoid crowds. I now only ride mid-week and try to be very aware of those behind me. If it gets even marginally crowded, I become very distracted and turn to a self-preservation mode. I'd like to believe that I can learn from the mishaps of others.

Hope you heal soon and completely.

Over two weeks ago, at Aspen, i was being careless riding with @yamifumi who is a regular stance rider vs my goofyness. We basically heelside carved into each other's line and in the process of me avoiding a collision, i did some type of weird fall which resulted in a sprained left knee MCL. It's finally feeling better and i was able to carve this weekend. Interestingly enough, being locked into the high angles i used results in no pain from actual carving. It now only really hurts when i've been sitting for a long time and i try to extend the knee. I'm glad it wasn't worse but the orthopedic surgeon that saw me said i'm fine with any activity as long as the resulting movement doesn't cause pain. It should fully heal in 6-8 weeks. either way, i'm taking it easy.

C, glad to hear you got away mostly unscathed!    I have found it hard recently, but always good to look at the silver lining and be happy we didn't break any bones or worse!

Try to enjoy the off the hill down time..........

I thought I would post a positive report.  I was hit from behind earlier this week by a young racer warming up, just above the lift. Thanx to @Jack M for his concerted efforts to make me look across my turn and then back up the hill to finish it, I saw him coming with enough time to evade a disaster - he was flying.  Minor back contact for me while he plowed on down the hill on one ski, having broken one binding.  I had another carver behind me who saw it all so am sure I was not at fault.  Both of us walked away, him grumbling under his breath - didn't even check in to see if I was ok despite us both querying his well being.

Had a very similar encounter with some kid coming in hot at the spillway exit to skyline lift at the loaf. I was cruising casually flat boarded approaching the lift line when this kid came down at a pretty good rip, way out of control. I leaned to the impact to brace for my back about to be broken and he jumped just behind me clipping my tail and total yard sale with his goggles hanging off his helmet sliding a good ways. I dodged a bullet. Just told the kid to speed check it and kept er moving into the lift line. The crowd standing around was speechless and the kid said, ya I’m ok. Guy, gfy. Then later in the day I saw the same kid zip past me like he was doing a super G. Eh, kids. I wasn’t so lucky the next day. Got bit by a snow snake, buried my nose in a soft spot and blew my ankle up. Bad sprain and out 4-6wks to light duty. Bad timing but will be back next year.

The ski racer kids at our local hill give me the jeebies. They think the own the place, and they fly down at max speed with no regard for anyone but themselves - and they also think you're supposed to stay out of "their" way. The last face back in to the lift at Nakiska drops away blind for probably 150 feet, and one day one of them is going to collect someone in a big way down there, if they haven't already.

Gotta say that if you hit dredman the way he dresses, then I hope you didn't drive to the hill that day ...

Sorry to generalize but many of the Millennials are hopelessly brain dead as am I, at 78, occasionally!

It’s all good…beeee careful…and assume that the rule, which used to be, the uphill person makes sure they don’t hit the downhill person is now watch for every other person anywhere near you that could possibly hit you.

Orthopedic Dr/PT/Ports Specialist knee issue?

Damn, I didn’t want to end up on this list and I’m hoping it’s a short stay.
Got whacked by a big skier…no blame assigned…we both apologize and finished our runs.
No swelling or discoloration, medial side of right knee joint is tender to palpatiion…I can row, do push-ups, pull-ups, chin-ups, dumbell squats, get my left leg into bed all with no discomfort BUT if I sit on the side of my bed and try to get my right leg into bed straight or bending it only slightly, OMG, never do that again…it’s like an ice pick sharp pain. If I bend my right leg, no problem. I can walk fine but if I try to extend my stride my right knee says, “No, no, no!”

Something is wrong in there.
N E suggestions?

Hoping to get an MRI very soon.
Since there is no swelling I’m applying heat to increase blood flow and, hopefully, more rapid healing.
edit: YouTube vid said don’t apply heat. With zero swelling I would think more blood flow to the area would speed healing kinda like injecting platelet rich plasma???
