several years ago i snapped 5 ribs in CO and the fear of getting a bill that looked like this informed my stupid decision to get myself off of the hill, unassisted.  i foolishly left the scene like I’d robbed a bank or something ( i hit a fixed object, not another skier/boarder)i wish I could say I was in shock or unaware of the extent of my injuries, but a piece of paper like barryj’s bill for transport was precisely what i was thinking about the whole time.

bill for transport

What's  scary is those bills Keep Coming!!    It's been almost a year ago,  as of Jan. 19th!

The last combined bill I saw for medical, air transport, ground transport was over $100, 000 :smashfrea

Thank God I was working!    Workers Comp is a blessing...and a curse!    They were going to get me better.....even if it killed me!   They made me take time off from work twice which means they only pay 75% of your usual income.    Not a game changer but being forced to take time off and less income  is trading one stress for (a financial)  another!

Neil Good luck on your healing process. I have had both hips replaced due to your same situation. Right hip 3 years ago 2nd week in Dec could barely walk, left hip last year 2nd week in Dec kind of did it bc I new what was coming from right hip!! Started exercises asap given by visiting PT nurse. Never used a cane only crutches to make sure I was always walking straight with no limp, probably 3-4 weeks. Went to P T religiously and over did it to say not wimping out followed instructions I was given by the book. Was on the hard boots last week in Jan or first week in Feb both times laying into the carve after the third turn not being afraid of it bc I feel I use more energy/fight the board when I do not carve. Never had a problem and still do not today best thing I ever did. Just went to one year check up doc impressed. He told me I was unrestricted as soon as I left the hospital I just needed to build my muscles back up from the leg being favored for so long. My surgery was done from the front so muscles are barely disturbed compared to from the back. Process began when I was 50. Cant wait for this weekend to lay it out if conditions allow!! Good luck you will know when the time is right!!

On my first day of the season, second run I lost my edge & went to my ass.   Not a bad spill at all, but I happened to also catch my thumb on the fall & completely severed my UCL (Skier's Thumb).   Surgery set for Tuesday 12/27.   Doctor says I'll be in a brace for 5-6 weeks & a couple months of PT.   Its amazing how much you cant do without your thumb!

Not so lucky after all.  (it’s all relative, of course) Yes, I had dodged a bullet after my first accident, i.e. only treatment, be careful. Let it heal. (Non displaced proximal fracture of the greater tuberosity of my left humerus). Second fall two weeks later on December 24th, being super careful on black ice, lol! I slipped and fell smack dab on the exact same spot on my healing shoulder. Lots of pain for the ensuing week so I got an earlier follow up appointment yesterday and after reviewing the new X-ray with Dr Arroyo, a very, very reputable shoulder specialist, now revealing the newly displaced fracture, I walked out of the office at 6pm with a completed open surgical reduction of the fracture. A nerve block kept my arm as limp as a wet wash rag until this morning when I took my first dose of 10mg of Oxycodone with only 19 doses remaining.
Shit happens and we’re so lucky when it’s fixable. My Dr said IF you were a 79 year old couch potato I’d send you home with no surgery but I know your lifestyle so if you want to return to full function and strength and you’re willing to do the work let’s fix you. My goal is to row as close as I can to a 24’ Head of the Charles on the third Friday of next October and MAYBE, if the stars, the moon and the sun line up bring home a medal in the 80-84 men’s singles. A pipe dream I’ve had since I started rowing and started competing in Boston every year since 2006!

So Sorry Buddy!   Hang in there!   It's been two years since my rotator cuff surgery and I'm now back up to 3 sets squatting and 3 sets benching  135lbs. 3x per week.   The Doc. said  my shoulder would never be able to handle that amount of weight again ......but with a lot of patience and persistence I'm back!

You will be too!      One day at a time........

Good news is no posts to this thread since December 30th.
Bad news is that ends today.

Season ended for me March 27th.  Solo carving.  Got tossed in a toe side resulting in a oblique proximal fibula fracture, minimally displaced.  I.e., an angled break above the boot cuff.  I waited to post until seeing an ortho as that wasn't going to be the full story.

I saw ortho's PA today and they basically ignored the fibula fracture as uninteresting (didn't even take a new x-ray) and turned to the ankle.  They diagnosed a distal tibiofibular syndesmosis, where the fibula and tibia get separated at the ankle.  They say it needs anatomical reduction (via surgery) or the biomechanics of the ankle will be messed up leading to arthritis.  This won't be first surgery for this ankle; I had a flap of torn cartilage removed from the talus in 2011.

Yes, it hurts.  Still swollen and ugly a week later.  Hope to be recovered by summer.  Stay safe out there.

surgery for this ankle;

Bummer JJ!      But Hey....If it's any consolation I fully dislocated my left ankle ....yes, as painful as it sounds, a decade or so ago and needed the same surgery.

Fast forward  to today and every Orthro Doc. I've seen over the years says my left ankle has better range and is stronger than my right!

I remember Annie Doyle having a similar accident at Milkland, at Aspen Valley hospital after X-rays, MRI's the doctor said, we will go in tomorrow afternoon and put in some plates and screws!!! Mike Doyle thought he would send the MRI shots to an Orthopedic specialist in LA that he knew, He told Mike to take her home to Cabo, put her on the couch for six weeks and not to stand on it at All, Well after six weeks she was just fine...perhaps second opinions are a good Idea before they Operate...

Second opinion always a good idea before taking the option of last resort.

Update:  Second opinion received, this time meeting with an actual surgeon at a different clinic.  Same diagnosis and treatment recommendation.  Both argued that when tibiofibular syndesmosis injuries are left untreated it can lead to chronic ankle instability and degenerative arthritis.  Both felt there was evidence of enough syndesmosis injury to warrant internal fixation to put things in the right place to heal properly.  They'll look for other ligaments needing repair while in there.

Rather than wait 6 weeks to see if it's still messed up, I'm going to do the repair and hope to be on my feet again without a boot by June.

For what it’s worth (3rd opinion) you absolutely need a stable, reduced ankle mortise to have a good result, and this type of injury almost always needs surgery.

The ankle is not a flat or a circular joint. It is a saddle joint. Small malalignments cause terrible problems. Think of nesting spoons, aligned properly they sit perfectly, twist them even a little and they are riding on the edge. Good luck with surgery and recovery.

Guess I'll join the list. Broke my clavicle into 4 pieces dodging straightliners a couple weeks after MCC. 11 $500 screws and 2 $1000 plates and 4 weeks later I'm back out on snow the 1st time, on skis so I won't fall over, and a 12 yr old snowboarder takes me out from behind! I am so done with weekends.

I was given the choice of non surgical maybe 70-80% chance of full recovery over  months. Opted for surgery to get back to work sooner. Glad I did. Arm is usable now and I'm back riding in 1 month instead of several.
