Neil Gendzwill Posted January 26, 2016 Report Share Posted January 26, 2016 (edited) Some people asked me to post some thoughts on my new VSR AM, seen below. I never got much chance to ride it in the manner intended. I took it through some easy black bumps a couple of times at Nakiska but the cover was thin and everybody else at NES was on the groomers. It performed just fine there, easy to turn and no problem putting it where I wanted it to be. On the groom, it carved very well and despite the softened tail had more pop than my Nirvana (180 cm, 12/14 sidecut), which I largely attribute to the tighter sidecut. It was very eager to get into the turn compared to the Nirvana: when I switched back to the Nirvana I had to be more conscious of a stronger turn initiation. Mind you the Nirvana is 13 cm longer and the difference in effective edge is probably another 5 cm at least, plus the 3 m difference in sidecut. The shorter side cut made for more work as I was turning more and tighter. Overall the VSR AM was a surprisingly capable and fun carver, being that it wasn't really designed for that. At speed, the VSR AM is more nervous of course. I didn't really feel the softness of the tail too much carving nice round turns at slower speeds, but picking up the pace it felt looser. Towards the end of the day as I got more tired I was happier on the Nirvana where I could cruise big arcs at speed with confidence and not work so much. In a couple of weeks I will be taking it to Whistler where I intend to abuse it in the steep and bumpy. BlueB Posted January 27, 2016 Report Share Posted January 27, 2016 Here's the new baby. This is a Coiler VSR AM 165 with the nose stretched a bit to make it 167. It's the XT sidecut (9/11/10), 22 cm waist, 16 mm taper. The nose has what Bruce terms the AM decamber but the tail has a race decamber and has been softened. This board is designed for steep bumps and tight conditions. The tail design (taper, decamber, softened, rounded corners) should help it release easier, skid when I need it to and not get hung up in the bumps. Bruce claims it still carves well (he test-drove it in the rough). This sounds exactly like something I'd enjoy riding! Is it Titanal or classic construction? How light/heavy? What would you choose for a day with mixed groom powder and trees that funnel you into some narrow long bump runs. After a bit of back and forth this is what he came up with. A modified SL board with asym core 167cm with 145effective edge the nose with a longer elevation from the usual 165 for powder float. Angry sidecut 8.5/11/9 21.5cm wide. I was out in mixed conditions at WolfCreek yesterday and can tell you all that this is just what the Doctor ordered. The red board is a bxfr nose, bx tail. 160, 23.8 waist, 8.5 scr. set up as a soft boot carver. running 45/36 angles and get very slight boot out. will hopefully add some soft boot plates of some sort at some point to help with this and get a little more cant/rear heel lift. Not wanting to increase angles any more. Using rossignol Xavier De La Rue bindings, which are working, and have some built-in canting and toe lift, but would like to compare the footprint with other options, as the heel cup seems big. This board is super quick edge to edge for a softie set-up, and makes the firm groomers fun, while enabling me to still go anywhere on the mountain comfortably, including bumps and powder conditions. This will get a lot of use as a go anywhere firm conditions board. The blue one is a nirvana energy 169, 21 waist, 9.7-10.7-10 vscr. This thing is sick!! Granted, I am coming from an older burton alp and burton bindings, but this thing rails. Tight slower carves or big hi-speed turns; this thing holds. wow. I am using F2 carve bindings and my old burton hardboots for now, and i can’t imagine how solid it’s going to be with new stiffer boots (suggestions?). I am running 54/45 angles, and only feel a little boot on slower, deep, laid out carves. I am running cant on both bindings, and heel lift on the rear. On my first day on this set-up, I was hooting like i was getting deep, steep powder turns on my Hovercraft, so fun!! Thanks Bruce!!!! We got 20+ last night and 5 more today and 20 more coming tonight through Monday. I was at Northstar all day and then straight up to Boreal for night shredding and was having a Blast in the deep but killing myself fighting an All Mtn. board with bindings maxed all the way back wanting to auger in when it was knee deep and steep on Lost Dutchman!!! So decided to pony up for the right tool! New Moss Snowstick U-5 and this is Next Years Model!~ Some stats: Length: 1570. R.Length: 864. EF.Edge: 1060. Sidecut: 9800/6900. Nose/Tail: 310/292.
