Big Mountain Expression Session!?!?!?!?

Dr D

Recommended Posts

Yesterdays carving was worth celebrating, but last night's champagne went stale by morning. Cold wind blew all night; left none of that 8 inches on the groomers, and what did find a home on the mountain was wind packed pretty hard.

I wasn't expecting it to blow all night AND all day, but it kept the resort mostly shut down today. I got stuck on chair 2 last night for 30 minutes when this wind and cold arrived and caused some kind of safety fault. Then today, chair 1 never ran, and chair 2 didn't spin until almost 2 PM. After sampling the t-bar and chair 3, I went home and got my split board and made it up for a run through Good Medicine, but those that didn't weren't missing much.

Forty or so days of good snow, and now she's an ice cube for the next week. No worries, should thaw by next weekend. :)

I just checked the temp on the top of Big -12F!!! Looks like the cold temps will break by Thursday-Friday. Usually very good conditions follow a cold snap like this. Once they get to run the groomers over the hard pack it gets pretty fun too, just have to stay very bundled up.

It seems to always snow at Targhee and Kelly.

Cant wait to be back in Montucky and riding the BIG!

Thanks for the update Dr.D!

Nice work on the 1.2+ Million Vertical Feet @ the Big! Keep up the pace!!

awwwwwwh did the poor island boy get his nose froze:lol: two days of that and we dub you an honorary montanan:lol: 38 below zero west of town this morning. 18 below in kalispell.

Is BIG MTN full of ****???

<TABLE class=gbvrs cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=4 width=762 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=f10blue vAlign=top align=left width=500 colSpan=2>10 am update: This could be the prettiest morning all season. This is definitely a groomer day...I skied Toni Matt, Big Ravine and Hogan's East, which are all skiing great. Off-piste is chunky due to yesterday's high winds. The temps have gone up a little bit, but make sure you're treating your hands, feet and the tip of your nose with care! Hellroaring Basin is now open.)

We're back to clear, crisp, and calm. If you haven't seen the views from the summit, this is a day to see Glacier National Park from the top. The groomers have been out there reshaping and moving wind-blown drifts so that we can cruise on the corduroy. We have groomed runs that will please every type of skier/boarder. For a perfect intermediate run, with a nice pitch, don't forget to check out Hogan's. Moose is groomed too, so it will be nice to duck into that run. Today we have a wind chill advisory, so make sure you cover your face while riding the lifts--bring a neck warmer to keep your skin protected. The mid-mtn high is forecasted at 9 degrees. Take a few runs and then grab a hot drink at the Summit House or Ed and Mully's. Keep your hands and toes warm. I'll see you on the slopes (or in the Summit House!)

Wow--yesterday was an exceptional day on the Big when nature proved herself queen of the hill. These things happen...very rarely. We didn't open the summit yesterday. For those of you who wonder what conditions were like on the summit, it was a place for polar explorers, not recreational skiers. We had an exceptionally strong wind event that blew whale-sized, rock hard snow drifts onto the runs. Sub-zero temperatures and cold winds continued throughout the day. I want to thank lift operations, ski patrol, and the groomers for making the right decisions and for keeping us off the summit!

What are you doing on Tues and Weds night? It's a full moon and you should check out Moonlight Dine and Ski...ski under the full moon, eat some good chow, and see what Montana's all about! Call the Info Center for details. 862-2900.

We have some great events on the way, so now I'm sending out a call to all VOLUNTEERS! Come volunteer at the Whitefish Whiteout Mountaineering race on Saturday, January 26. We need 6 volunteers. You'll receive a free pass that is valid for 12 months and a chance to watch this amazing race. Also, the 60th Annual Doug and Rollie Smith Downhill and Super G Race is just around the corner (Feb. 3-10). We need 60 volunteers to cover 7 days of high octane racing. If you check out the events page on the website, you'll find a volunteer form. All volunteers must have their own equipment and be able to ski.

Just ask the locals--this year has been one of the best. In fact, I know this local skier, kind of a sweet ol' curmudgeon, who is not known for platitudes. I heard him say the other day, "This is some really good skiing." I nearly fell off the chair. 213" of beautiful snow has fallen since just before Thanksgiving. Dave and I have been shooting a bunch of photos and taking video to share this amazing winter with everyone. Keep checking our video link on the snow report for a chance to share in the experience.

Do you know about tree wells? Ski Patrol has put out a info board at the summit with information on how to ski safely. We've received a lot of snow and the tree wells are getting big. Ski under control, be aware of your surroundings, and ride with a buddy.

The Nordic Center was groomed Saturday. Track set Sunday. No skating due to snow drifts. Please check back later for today's grooming.

The Big Easy (Magic) Carpet is not running today.

List of today's groomed runs.

Motorola freq 7 07

my cell (four oh six) 2535420

I will be on the hill saturday AM early first chair to the summit is 9:30

I will be on chair 6 at 9 AM for warm up and meet and greet.

those arriving later use the motorolas to hook up with us and watch the grease board at the bottom of chair one. We should be hard to miss.

the group can break up into a fast group and a slow group etc. from there. several of us will be willing to give mountain tours etc. First day informal. we will try to have some video and picture time if the sun cooperates.

I plan to be in one of the close lots with the truck with locking topper full of quiver so demo and tryout stuff will be available. Saturday lunch in the summit house at 1:30 PM meet and greet and arrange for meal reservations etc for later in the week.

pretty informal have a good time meet new people and most importantly trench the hell out of toni matt:eplus2::eplus2::eplus2::eplus2::eplus2:

If it snows a ton we'll shift gears and i'll lead powder tours of the good spots!:biggthump

Hi DR D, Saturday sounds good. But It will be very hard not getting on chair 2 my first morning out. Im sure I can work it in somewhere. Does chair 2 still open at 9? Steve

No worries nothing is set in stone. chair six and chair two are both open at 9 AM . Chair six is just a good place to get everyone together. you can see the whole run from the top and the bottom. we can get everyone together and then you can lead us in a round of cum ba ya as we destroy ed's run:lol:

to come to this.Since I went a couple of weeks without work , it is touch and go as to when I will be able to attend.I am hoping I can get there for Sunday and Monday the 27-28th.If anyone has a floor I could sleep on Sunday night that might help me commit.

I am sure we can find you some floor space for one night somewhere.:biggthump

Does anyone know if there's a cheap way to get from Spokane, WA to Whitefish? Like maybe a bus? :) Just curious. I'd love to get out there just to ride during the week...and if I could figure out how to get to Big Mtn. from Spokane without having to rent a car, I'd do it!

Scott

PS - That's assuming Spokane is the cheapest/closest place to fly into from the east coast?

AMtrak from spokane to whitefish is easy and reasonable but it boards in the middle of the night. Its a three to three and a half hour drive. missoula is 100 miles but the prices aren't that different to just flyin in here. flathead county airport otherwise known as glacier park international. there is also a bus but I am uncertain of its schedules. trailways I believe is the line.
