Jack M
Just picked up the first ever Winterstick Squaretail Plus 170! My USASA auction prize. With a nod to the old Roundtail Plus 170, hehe… 170cm long, 21cm waist, 9-12-11m "Roboid" VSR sidecut, high camber, full Titanal/carbon, extra torsional stiffness between the feet. We'll see if it can measure up to my beloved Kessler 168! Based on their metal 162 I tried last winter, I'm optimistic. Gonna be a good winter!

That is actually a good length and SCR for Turner. Great Looking board! @soccerdoge of Winterstick is doing great things in the carving world.

AJCdice
Looks great, Jack. A question I never knew the answer to is: how did this western (Utah, I think) brand wind up in Maine? AC
boardguru
It's a long and complicated story. Dimitrije moved out to Utah from the East coast in the early 70's and worked at Snowbird before beginning the Winterstick company in Salt Lake City.

Yep! 9 hours ago, AJCdice said: A question I never knew the answer to is: how did this western (Utah, I think) brand wind up in Maine? I can't do the story justice but suffice to say Dimitrije has not been involved in many years. The company has a good relationship with him and pays him homage. One of the current BMP owners, Tom Freemont-Smith of Maine is an old friend of my wife's - small world. Great guy. Maine Olympic hero (and my fellow longtime Sugarloafer) Seth Wescott bought in to the company in 2014 and helped move the manufacturing to Sugarloaf. Pretty cool having a custom snowboard shop in my back yard. You can read the story here, it's a pretty quick read: https://www.winterstick.com/history-of-winterstick/ @boardguru is mentioned in the story though I'll let him introduce himself if he wants!

Popular Post boardguru
I met Chris Gochnour the summer of 1975 at a 1/4 pipe in S.L.C. He worked for Winterstick making skateboard decks called Streetstick. He gave me a one page brochure about Wintersticks, I was immediately hooked on trying to learn how to surf snow if I could just get my hands on one of those boards. I had tried learning how to surf in California while awaiting my discharge papers after returning from Vietnam. I started calling the company weekly then 2/3 times a week to see if they had started production. Eventually I would go to the shop and just generally make myself a HUGE pain in the ass, I HAD to have one of those boards! Then in Jan. of 1976 Joel Bingham of Bingham Cyclery became an official Winterstick dealer in Utah. He had a 15 minute video of Dimitrije riding a Swallowtail. We just about wore that video out watching it so many times. Then in mid Feb. I got a phone call from Joel to come by the shop. It seems that Dimitrije had personally driven up from S.L.C to deliver board number 13, the first board to be sold to a customer, all of the other 12 had been sent out to prospective dealers. He told Joel to " sell this board to that a.....e that won't leave us alone and get him off our backs"! There is more to the story about just learning to ride 'sticks but it would take up too much space here. Also the board Regis Roland bought while we were at Les Arcs was my red Swallowtail that Renee Sessions sold to him, she was V.P. of Winterstick. So here I am now 46 years later this Feb. still surfing snow and just as stoked now as when I was harassing Winterstick to just sell me a damn board! Thanks for reading mick thueson Sorry for the thread hijack 9

boardguru
Unfortunately no. I gave it to a skater friend name of Arnie Hoag who like me had the 'sticking fever. Passing on the stoke to get more people into surfing snow. Back then there were very few people even interested in it. When we would get to the road at the bottom of Cardiff Bowl at Alta people would look at us like we were aliens.
