dredman
We have quite a few “First Time Carving Session” people joining us for the Montucky Clear CUT. Some are traveling alone and might be anxious about the whole deal. No one likes showing up to a new situation alone. Many of us are already very excited to see friends that we have made over the years at other carving sessions! My question for all of you is, how do we help speed up the “getting acquainted dance” and make it super friendly, inviting and comfortable for the lone wolves joining our pack? Did the Mentor Program at Aspen Sessions work? Would a meet up the Sunday the 10th help? Start a thread on “How to Survive and Thrive at your First Session”? Any other ideas? If we do not come up with any great, easily implemented ideas, I will be counting on each and every one of you to go out of your way to meet new people. Ride the lift / take a run with some one you do not know, learn about each other on the ride up. Chances are you will have a lot in common. We are a small pack and all need to help this sport and event grow! Thanks! David 1

The only complaint I heard seemed to be that a few mentors were picked on riding abilities, not friendliness. If you're grumpy and don't like new people, you probably shouldn't be a mentor. One lift at Turner means that it's going to be hard to get lost/separated. "Meet you at the bottom" as opposed to "Meet you at the third chair to the left that's only accessible by a hard-to-see catwalk." I like the idea of a casual opening party on the Sunday! lonbordin
There's a lot of theories on group cohesiveness and group effectiveness out there. Form, norm, storm, perform / trustfall activities / etc Some basics that nearly all agree upon. - You must assemble as a group. There must be a valid reason for assembly. (Ex: reading the rules and what will happen to rule violators) - There needs to be skin in the game for the participants (example: my safety/enjoyment comes from everyone respecting the no passing rule. If I violate the rules my pass will be revoked) - Keep expectations in reality, not even in the best of circumstances will everyone normalize to the group and high group performance is very rare and usually only in small groups. This is why people tend to cluster in smaller groups inside of larger groups. BTW- I like your idea of riding the lift up with different people as much as possible. Maybe ask folk not to wear earbuds on the lift so everyone can easily converse. (I'm certain there's a few guys who are looking forward to just riding with tunes and no focus behind them and are not interested in meeting other people on the hill who are coming to the event. Perhaps have these folk self- identify so they can ride lifts up together.) Good luck.
b0ardski
A sunday eve meet n greet will be great to jump start those chair lift conversations. We can answer ???, plan apres gathering, set up car pools, maybe rent a shuttle van, a big screen for eye candy with some drinks/snacks? maybe venture has a meeting rm? or take over a corner of the casino/restaurant next door. leaving earbuds in pretty much self identifies. a 13 min, double chair is plenty of time to make friends I usually ride a smoking/drinking chair Edited January 15, 2019 by b0ardski
Kneel
I'm socially awkward (at best), but certainly not afraid to talk. It's an AWESOME combination. A meet & greet on Sunday night is a fabulous idea...
Dan
Thumbs up for meet & greet on Sunday night! I was also considering putting my name on my helmet using masking tape...might help break the ice on the hill if many of us do that - I think even those of us who have been around for a long time can't necessarily match that many names with faces.

Allee
Lots of you guys already know each other, and that's cool. But remember to include the people that might be hanging uncertainly around the edges. The two years I was at Aspen I deliberately struck up conversations with people who were looking a little lost, and had three of those people tell me later how much they appreciated it, after everyone else had high fived their buddies and gone off together. Sunday night party is fine, but if other people are like me, I'm not going to remember anyone else's name after five minutes. I'm sure as hell not going to recognize anyone the next day with all their gear on. What about a meeting place first thing in the morning, where people who didn't have a riding posse, or wanted to meet new friends of the same ability, could gather for a few chair rides together with a mentor? Kind of how the ski hills do intros at 10 am. You'd probably only have to do it the first two days.

AcousticBoarder
Love the tape with name on helmet idea. Would love to also see your forum name there too! Should have a few rolls of tape and sharpies at whatever tent meeting place we have at the bottom (is there one?)
