My Season in NUMBERS......

kinpa

Recommended Posts

I did the numbers thismorning actualy..... after realizing I was not going to get "just 1 more day"....

For the first time in nearly a decade I have less than 50 days on snow :( . Actual #: a lowly 18. However, the good part of that was on super nice condition days, and 9 of them were on the carver which I did not ride at all until ECES @ stratton. Only had on the softies for 1 day after that (EPIC POW DUMP DAY during ECES). Had too many other things going on this winter to really get out to enjoy it. Did finaly talk to my graphics guy and finalizing the topsheet for the Coilier VSR from Bruce, so this season was indeed Good :)

The season out west is far from over, but the lift assisted runs have been replaced by daily hiking, except for a few more weekend hits further away.

I do extensive tracking, so I've got more numbers to share than most. Not everyone has the wherewithal to move to the Rockies and make riding a priority, but if you do, these could be your numbers too:

Total days so far (including today): 127

Lift assisted days: 105

Whitefish Mountain Resort, MT: 92

Aspen, CO: 7

Fernie, BC: 4

Kimberley, BC: 1

Turner Mountain, MT: 1

Hiking days: 22

Buy why stop with such simple stats? Doesn't everybody track their vertical and board usage?

Final numbers are a good month or more away. Last year I reached 163 days on July 23rd at Logan Pass in Glacier Park. :)

Pry not this year as total days are down because of low November and December snow and a delayed resort opening.

The remaining open resorts within 5 hours are Silver Mountain, Banff Lake Louise, and Sunshine Village.

Yes, John.... Quite impressive.... I am a numbers kind of person myself, but ya got me on which boards riding when! It's great to see that most of the boards you have get ridden.... I only saw one with a 0... Is something wrong with that one? Ya probably got most beat with the number of days hiking..... You must be in great shape! I don't know if I could make it even one day up the mountain..... I think you are true definition of a die-hard.... And quite lucky you have the means to do it!

BTW- how do you track your numbers?

Suunto watch with altimeter. It counts vertical ascent and decent in feet, but more importantly, number of laps (runs). I reset to a new log when I switch boards, then update a spreadsheet each evening. For the local resort, I track based on the number of runs on each lift so I can compare to the numbers posted online by the resort, which tracks by scanning your pass at each lift ride. When elsewhere, I just average the accent and decent numbers and round to the nearest hundred.

The only board in the quiver that didn't get out this year is a non-metal Coiler 188 with 17m sidecut. It's the board that taught me that big SCR can be fun, but I didn't have a binding kit on it and the ready-to-ride alternatives where always too attractive.

October 29, 2011-April 11 2012. 75 days total. 2 were at Stratton ECES and the rest were at Killington. 5 of those days were powder days, which isn't bad for Vermont. This winter was a big dissapointment in terms of natural snow. It's got me thinking about a splitboard and moving out west. Speaking of splitboards, anyone have suggestions for a setup for a big guy(250lbs, 6'1). I'de like to keep the boots and binding setup I have(TD3 and solomon skiboot) and stick to something like my prior 4wd. Hiking through three feet of powder to the untouched tops of mountains here is a LOT of work.

25 days (starting December 21st, ending March 31st), 228588 meters of altitude, 516 runs.

Winter started late this year but we had loads of snow here (west of Austria), the season was a little bit short (I usually average at about 30 days), as the weather in April sucked and ski lifts have closed the weekend after easter. Howvever in hindsight I am quite happy: It was a real winter (175cm of snow at home, over 4m in the mountains) and I had no injuries.

Numbers: About $15,000.00 and 15,000.00 klms, vertigo one day. 1 Coiler All Mountain with UPM plate, 1 Coiler BX1 with split plate.5 times crossing the Creston pass in British Columbia due to two cancelled flights. Unlimited smiles and new friends. Looking forward to next season. The one number i encourage riders to strive for is the number of plates you have tried.

Pretty meager season for me:

About 40 "days" on snow... but a typical 'day' for me was 4 runs on a 600 ft lift. Biggest day all season was 10 runs - 6000 vertical feet. So my whole season would be about 3% of johnasmo's tally. Sigh....

1 ski area.

1 imaginary carving event.

1 day (6 runs!) with another BOLer.

On the bright side, I had absolutely no injuries this year (not even a blackened toe nail!) and no broken gear. Didn't even need to redo the duct tape on my mittens.

It was with great sadness that I popped the top off of a TommyKnockers saison, put my sticks in a vice, and started pulling bindings tonight. Lovey is closing a week early, putting us out of our collective misery as we dodged both rocks and sheer ice for the last month and a half of the season. This is Colorado, the land of hero snow, we don't know how to ride that ice $hit, ice is not in our snow board lexicon, we put it in our adult beverages, and use it in the summer to keep our beer cold, we most certainly do not ride on it! I think I had around 30 days if I was lucky, the least in 10 years, and I stayed in bed more than I ever had due to lack of snow or insanely high winds this season. I know, cry me a river.... looking foward to next season, this one was one of the worst we have had in a very loooooong time

And I thought my numbers were letting my nerdiness show through.... Wow.... Hahahahahaha. But I am certainly a numbers person and I so do admire your humor in it too.... Very impressive!

Well, actually my numbers came from being bored at my desk and having my calendar in front of me!
