lordmetroland
LBC! For the 25th consecutive year, I will not be in Stuben for the Longboard Classic. But the Stateside version - The Longboard Poseur - was held at Loveland on April 2! Here are some shots from an unforgettable day: The full participant quiver! Actually, the Arbor was just left there by some guy who went to take a piss. But all the rest are from the event! The full lineup at the top of Patrol Bowl! Plus some rando skiers observing the hill: And a panorama of the sponsor tents! A great place to meet fellow longboard enthusiasts ... ...and rent a locker and refill your water bottle and pee. Fine, it was just me, by myself, sneaking up to The Luv on a Monday. The old Glissade Big Gun 195 - I really want it to be my all time favorite board - rode like a pig. F-ing awful. The Tanker 186, the 30th anniversary model, rode like the opposite of a pig. Spent most of the day off 9, including a seeing-eye ride down Patrol Bowl in a squall (if you don't like the weather at Loveland, wait 10 seconds) and a hike to the south end of Super Bowl (the UPZs did surprisingly well in the bootpack). And I strafed Mario's Yard a few times because it was very inviting and I could. Not the LBC and not Stuben, but it's ours. 5 1
JohnE
Went up to Loveland last Friday & did their snowcat tour. Eight of us on the cat: 5 skiers and 3 on boards. Ski Patrol Phil runs the program. He's been a ski patrol for 41 years. He really knows his stuff. The cat picked us up on the top of #8 and went into Dry Gulch - the next valley east of Lift #8. Hadn't snowed for several days but the snow quality was pretty good. Didn't see any tracks. Perfect bluebird day. Warm - most stripped off their outer layers. One guy skied in short sleeves. I think we got in about 11 runs / about 12k vertical feet. Dropped us back on the top of #8 about 3:30. Fun time. Could be wonderful with new, light snow.
JohnE
Went up Tuesday. Wasn't planning on new snow but they had 10" overnight. Was very warm the day before so what was underneath was very hard. A bit of a traffic jam getting to the lot. Lots of powder hounds out. Mostly non-Loveland regulars. First in line on #2. Ptarmigan wasn't open so we went to #4. We were on the 3rd chair there. Lifties and ski patrol had a hard time getting there so by about 10AM only Chet's Dream, #2, #6 & #4 were running. First ride up #4 Scrub was relatively untracked. Rode to top. Visibility was really bad. First run down Telstar / Scrub was a real surfing experience. The 10" of new was very dense. Greg went over the handlebars and had difficult time getting up. Second ride up Scrub was almost entirely tracked out. All the skiers/boarders were concentrated on a few slopes. I've NEVER seen a slope go from untracked to massacred so quickly. Second run down was like standing on the back of a bucking bronco. I was exhausted. Third run down Apollo. Terrible visibility. I tweaked my back trying to stay upright. Headed down to the lodge. Called it a day after 3 runs / 1 hour. My back still hurts. That snow should make a good base for the groomers if it doesn't get too warm. Odd Job
10" of fresh pow at a crowded megapass resort is nothing after 30 minutes. It's still fun riding tracked pow. But riding untouched/mostly untouched pow requires $$$$, or going to more remote mountains.

slopestar
Super fun day yesterday! Newb Sparky, Ice, Sandy, Coach, Skier Jeff, Shelly, Tree Run Hillary, Katie and I rounded out the crew. Bennet's was on point. Smiles for miles. Soft turns to be had everywhere! The ladies were all charging for freshies as the rest of us tried to keep up. Just a great day to be on the hill. Id like to thank the guys that wrecked on 70 just above Silver Plume for keep the crowds down! See you in May?!!!

JohnE
Yesterday was one of the worst days this season - conditions wise. Until about 10:30 it was mid-winter conditions on April 30th! Above timberline it was ground blizzards, zero visibility, windy & cold. Snow on the ground was very firm groom. Impossible to carve in. Vertigo was extreme. After 11 or so we would get occasional patches of blue sky. The clouds were screaming west -to- east. When we would get a hole in the clouds, the carving was pretty good but not perfect groom. Fewest people on the mountain in a year of mid-week days. Parking lot peaked at about 2/3 full. This was a season of many best-ever days so one of those days had to be the worst. Even as the worst day, it still wasn't that bad.
*Ace*
That sounds way better than being at work with spring in full swing, no snow around and no carving on the calendar.
Kneel
Really, @*Ace*. They need perspective/attitude adjustments. I'm out here with golf shoes which was a mistake. Passed Copper the other day on the way to BV and it looked pretty great for northeast standards. I think there's been almost a foot of snow the past two days and the webcam shows a ghost town. The wind doesn't look fun though, but I'd suffer with not having to look over my shoulder every turn even with "firm and blustery" conditions...

Colorado golf certainly doesn't. In CO it's more like Bugs and Jordan in Space Jam. I'm old, but can still hit the ball a ton. Throw in the lack of friction at elevation and the sustained 30 that was blowing last week at Interlocken, I hit Sunshine #6 with driver-PW two days in a row. I'm playing the blacks so that shit is like 550 and change. That's a 400 yard drive. I aint doing that at sea level. 280-290 maybe. Oh, and you have rattlesnakes on the courses there. I met one. I had to phone a friend to convince me NOT to try to pick those up and put it in someone's bag. Yeah I'm THAT guy.
JohnE
Saturday was the last day of the season for us and the first weekend day in many years. Lots of demo trucks and the banked slalom made for a packed parking lot. Way more crowded that we're used to but we were able to accomplish crowd avoidance pretty well. As we pulled into the lot we realized that our weekday season passes weren't going to work. We went to the ticked window to buy a day pass and they gave us tickets for free! You think Vail would do that? Don't you just love Loveland? We were pausing just below E Tow cabin and I looked up to see a rider coming toward us and after 2 turns my brain thought "that's Kevin" even though I hadn't seen him ride in many years. Indeed it was. Nobody else I know rides like that. So beautiful! I think we got in about 25 "days" (really 4 - 4.5 hours/day). No collisions, no close calls. Didn't violate Rule #1: Don't Get Hurt! A great season of many best ever days. We feel like we are getting incrementally better as time goes on but the age thing will eventually win. Looking forward to another season next winter.
inkaholic
Late start with the family Sat resulted in parking at the Valley. Chatted with Ice, SVR, HillB and OddJob. Sorry I missed you JohnE, been many years at this point. Fun slush carving softies till 230ish on the Rad Air Tanker 181 prototype. Dang I like that board. Sunday had a fractured group of Bigs, SVR, Slopeslayer, Miss Katie and her Hillary, HillB, the odd one, FNG Justin and leading lady Lisa. All came to close out the season playing about in the 7" new received over night. It was gleeful and much fun was had by all. I had to bail once our legs tired so no Ratskeller for me. See you all next season and some of you before that. Bigs, keep us updated on when surgery is. ink 3

No Mtb this summer, I can only get about 300 degrees of pedal rotation before the left starts screaming.
