@TWMSorry, Jasey-Jay guards his secrets pretty tight.  What I will say is that my new board is built with some kind of new (unknown to me) material which is extremely stiff at first but breaks in fast.  It gets better with every turn!  After four days it's almost soft enough to relax a bit, the first few days were brutal on my legs and dangerously fast...

Bruce has this 163cm template nailed down and I had a blast on it yesterday, even though I hadn’t really set up anything properly at all. I was in a hurry after picking it up and just whacked bindings on to test, stance ended up being a bit too wide and angles too shallow (18/9) to be comfortable on heelside, but it was still super easy to ride and carved like a maniac!

Apparently mine has a first for Coiler feature... grey sidewall ptex.

 (presume @ShortcutToMonctonwas still 'stock' white?)

Got mine out for a quick hour before the lifts closed today...  it was confidence inspiring.  Not enough ride time to assess properly just yet, but I'm stoked as it cut through the mess we had with the recent ~10cm that fell since yesterday.

Coiler Contra 169 295mm waist, 12m average sidecut...

Same shape as last season's board but stiffer.  Got this first one in March and told Bruce I thought it was too soft for the speeds I like.  He said the Contra design doesn't work in a stiffer board but I wasn't convinced.  So he made one in the same shape for my local buddy who fell in love with mine (and was heartbroken when I told him Bruce wasn't taking new clients).   Rode that board in December, thought it was a huge improvement and asked for another even stiffer so our local crew can pass around three boards with identical shapes but with variations in stiffness so we can find the sweet spot.

My first one was 6.05 stiffness, Carlos' board is a 6.4 and my new one is 6.6.

It might be a few days before I form an opinion on the ideal stiffness, it's snowing again and sadly all the corduroy got buried...

Will be interested to hear your feedback.  My 166cm Contra 19cm waist is 6.6 (+9).  How much do you weigh?  I'm 155lbs.

The wider widths (as well as length) will affect the stiffness and feel obviously.  

I was fortunate to see how he arrives at the measurements with his test rig using some standardized weights.

I'm also about 155lbs this winter, though my new cook is fattening me up fast!

Usually Bruce's stiffness numbers don't cross over to different models or lengths.  As I understand it (and no one really understands it except Bruce) when he makes the first board with a new design or length he records the stiffness and uses that as a baseline for future boards.  So your 6.6 might be wildly different than mine or exactly the same, only Bruce knows for sure.

It is a measurement of deflection for sure but relative to the construction which is all detailed and recorded on his build sheets - there's binders full...

Yeah, I think that relative stiffness varies between both board lengths and widths! I’m pretty sure Bruce said mine is a 7, which he stiffened up a little from my last build… I’m about 182lbs without gear so that might make sense. It definitely kicked back when I pressed!!

Love that 169! I’d also be interested in going the other way—who’s going to try a super-wide 158cm with a 9/10m sidecut?? How short can the effective edge go here?

Coiler stiffness decoded.  Bigger number is stiffer, but numbers are only comparable for same length, camber, lamination, and rocker profile.  They are not some kind of linear stiffness scale per se.

X . Y + Z

X.Y is a measure of deflection in centimeters (e.g., 6.0 or 6.6, etc.), but it's 12 minus the board deflection.  The number is the distance from a flat surface to the board suspended at the ends of its effective edge on 12cm blocks when under about a 75 lbs weight.  I.e., suspend the board, put fixed weight on it, precisely measure distance from the surface to the board.

+ Z is a record of the nose decamber profile used, as that will affect the X.Y measurement.

His build sheets include such measurements of the blank core, after initial lamination, and after topsheet.  The numbers are a simple and precise measurement for quality control purposes.  He'll know a target number he wants to hit for a customer based on his experience with that customer and their other boards.  Start with a precisely milled core; thickness chosen to target the flex he wants.  Measure the blank core stiffness to fine tune the laminates needed to hit the target.  Measure again after laminiation and add or remove glass/carbon until that's on target.  Then the topsheet goes on and final measurement is taken for the records.  Hand made craftsmanship.  When someone says stiffer or softer than my or so-and-so's such-and-such build, that's where these numbers come into play. 

Given 3 points on a curve, you can compute a decambered radius, and in theory have a normalized stiffness measurement for all your builds.  Yes, I've done that.  However, this is just a static deflection, and the laminate choices like T3 vs. T4, ratio of carbon to glass, and type of glass affect the dynamic feel of the flex.  IMHO, seat-of-the-pants is the best way to judge board stiffness.  Get out and ride them to establish a pecking order.

I don't pretend to speak for Bruce, only the big man himself decides how many boards he builds and for whom.   Apologies to anyone who was upset by this glib remark.

Added a new Donek Flux to the collection - now a trio of Silver Surfer intergalactic rides - new board is 175cm, 23.5cm waist, 12m/10m SCR. F2 Intec + Deeluxe Ground Control hybrid boots.

Yesterday was second day out with my buddy JohnE - had a truly magical day at Loveland - the very best carving in our 20 years of riding together - the new board completely rips - could not be happier with my Donek Flux rides.....Thank you Sean and team at Donek!!!!!

I went for the 12m to carve longer and faster turns witch it does superbly. I also asked for a stiffer board for hard carving. I got what I asked for and I'm very happy with it! I can turn pretty tight with it if I want to, just need to flex those knees and put the board on edge!

According to Mark "Stratacarvius Cravasse 184.5 WARP, Real wood, natural torrefied maple and oak. The logo is laser cut curly maple and teak.
