I have to admit that I didn't ride too many Coilers. The AM I tested few years ago was light years ahead of my AMish type of board I rode at the time.

After missing the boat for a custom Coiler AM-T early in the season, due to some work turbulences, I was lucky enought to get the Virus Vampire. What can I say, wow!

For techno junkies, it has it all, titanal, zylon, carbon, and wood inlays for beauty. However, I don't care much what's in it as long as it rode great! And it does.

19.3 waist is not very Virus like, but more traditional. I like that - it makes board more versatile. In fact, I wouldn't have bought it with narrow waist. If anything, I would love to see a 21 or 22 waisted version! Titanal also makes it damper then what Virus boards are famous for. Planty of pop still, when you want it. Crazy edge hold is still there, as well as variable riding radius. Smart nose design and titanal-enhanced softness enable the board to initiate in effortless manner and to hold over the ugliest surfaces. In fact, that nose would dissengage on rut without board chattering or skipping the track, and then engage again without any input reguired from the rider. It's ice day's dream board. However, no problems at all in the soft stuff. I even had it down a black dimond in 15cm of fresh over old frozen bumps.

Long railing turns - easy. EC - super easy (I have small feet and can ride sub 60 angles on it). Short SL turns - ride the nose and be aggressive, no problem.

The best part is that it is now a big bad-ass race board. While my big Prior is great fun on hero snow, it beats me up after half day of aggressive riding. Not the virus. It is as effortless as you wan't it to be.

I hope to ride/have a T Coiler next year, so I can compare more.

Hey J... sorry about the info on Ray being the Virus rep (yes it was me that told him that) my mistake!

Get in touch with Chris Houghton, he rides Virus's in our area...

Hi Bola, long time is right, things are good here, renovating the house, so not a lot of riding this season! I think J was asking for Ray because he wnated all info he could possibly get. He was not trying to start a fight, just wanted as much feedback as possible. I think it was all very innocent, at least this is how i read it. I know you are a good guy Bola, obviously the post rubbed you the wrong way, but I don't think that was the intention.

Keep the opinions coming, J is a good guy, I am vouching for him and he's just wants some insight on where to go for his next toy!:1luvu:

one more thing...my reference to 'ray' being a virus rep was based on information id gathered elsewhere. it could have been wrong. my mistake. thought he'd have some good insight about that product.

And that happened a couple time before and sure no big deal! I was basically who first pushed the Virus brand here in the US and therefore some people thought I would be the Virus rep. Like I said, I am a big fan of the Virus brand and over the last 5 years became really good friends with Frank the owner, who is a real genius in his field. He like nobody else uses material combinations for his boards & skies in a way which in my opinion are not met by any other manufacturer. In my case, I am riding only boards up to 14.2cm in the waist these days. To build a board with such a small waist, which delivers a tremendous amount of snap/pop and aggressive feel AND does not break due to the fact that it is too narrow or too thin, even with really aggressive riders like Max from Germany for example, is in my opinion is a real skill!

That’s all I say in regards to my opinion about Virus in general.

I did not want to comment at all because “my opinion” is way to bias. For me, there is nothing else but Virus, Virus and Virus.

Just found this shot of myself on the Pureboarding site. I think Joerg took it 2 days ago on Ruthies.

A nice shot which shows how narrow 14cm really is on the snow :eplus2:

Ok, out to Ajax now, blue skies and perfect groomers this morning ;)

But it's a Snowboard! :angryfire

Only for you: "SSSnnnooowwwbbboooaaarrrddd" :smashfrea

:ices_ange For me, if the Bindingangles are 90°, its a Skwal, but when they're <90°, then its a snowboard! :D

Nice pic Ray, but don't tell me too much about Aspen... wanna be there tooooo! :1luvu:

Btw: what about Chile?

(sorry for the bad quality, done with a phone camera)

Darn, sooo many people today, and the grooming sucked as well :D

what are the benefits of going super narrow (not a criticism, just curious)? super quick edge to edge i assume. do they work in conditions other than perfect groom? seems (intuitively) suited to a fairly narrow range of conditions. it's an interesting extreme. any vids of riders on board such skinny hardware?

did you even make a turn in that?

Not 100% sure if your question was for me, but I assume.

No, these days I don't make much turns anymore, getting really picky ... btw, do I know you, maybe from the SES? If not, we should go out togehter an play a little... Maybe next years SES.

FIS snowboard rules says, since a long time ago now, that a board has to be over 16cm wide to be a snowboard used in competition...In between 12-16 i guess its very skinny snowboards, and the frontier between skwal and snowboard is uncertain since its basically the same shape and just the biding settings could be a difference, as well as stance as Pokkis said ( very narrow on a skwal).

...In between 12-16 i guess its very skinny snowboards,

Doesn't work... My Easy Jungle has 12.5 waist, and it says Skwal on it :) Also, with my baby feet, I can ride it with sub-90 angles. From what I read, many skwalleurs dont ride 90/90, but rather with a bit of splay, for easier closure of the rear bail.

Other then preference for hip-to-hip technique over knee drive or toe-heel flexion on the other side of spectrum, I don't see why someone would be on a super skinny board. Not even to mention versatility... I was rather happy to score a wider Virus.

I have never been to an SES - unlesss we met in the early 90's racing in California, it would have had to have been in Vermont...Stratton probably.

Anyway - Not going to make SES next year, but I'll be in Crested Butte christmas week - if you're around we'll make turns (or not :eplus2:)

snip...

Similar things could be said about Coilers. One of my customers bought a pure race and loved it but it demanded too much from him and now he is waiting for a race carve. There are carvers here that totally love the AM but the AM is not my cup of tea.

Peace

Bola,

Could you give a synopsis why the AM is not your cup of tea and maybe a description of what would be (the experience/feeling rather than the board)? Thanks!!!

ps... did you rearrange the shop? looks different for some reason...
