@Jack Michaud proposing an integrated plate mount in another thread got me to thinking about the stagnation of snowboard development. Seems like the last time we saw a quantum leap (?) was the not so recent titanal ‘revolution’ (or its ensuing replacement with carbon fiber when titanal threatened to become unobtanium). I believe I recall @Beckmann AG also being a little vociferous* on this theme. So BOL’ers this is your chance to share that game changing snowboard idea you’ve spent a life time thinking about but never got around to wheeling out of the workshop. To begin this thread I will throw myself at the mercy of the forum with this: Why not double edges? Think Gillette razor. Could twice the effective edge allow you to run half-length boards with the same mechanical grip? Now you have my full attention Jack. A low, lightweight, fully integrated mount system that allows one board and a couple of easily changed plates for different conditions would be really interesting.

I'll start this question with the caveat I have never ridden any of the plate systems described here. They clearly all work and I would certainly try one if offered. To those who have, in the context of recreational carving only, what are your thoughts on the "bang for buck" factor? Given most systems retail upwards of $400 and add a couple of pounds (geckos excluded) would that money be better spent on another board more suited to dealing with crud, rather than trying to adapt your morning scapel into an afternoon machete?

Rather than ditch your sidewinders is it plausible you could just make some hard (eg Alum) spacers to replace the elastomers? (I have not seen them up close to know if it can be done)
