bobble
Morning blue bird skies. got there early. walked up the hill again. it wasn't as busy as i had expected. i think another guy and myself were the only snowboarders running crossroads. rest were skiers and there were many. bottom of milkrun was closed off but when they groomed for Winchfest it created a curved bowl at the bottom that was fun to ride. snow was great! around noon had the run to myself. i think everyone was downhill watching Winchfest. this photo was taken around noon. hardly anyone on the chair yet the parking lot was crowded. Winchfest red bull was doing Winchfest. the way it worked was a boarder got pulled up the hill by a winch. they'd go over a box and jumps on the way up. they would then return back down the hill and grind on a rail and do a few more bumps on the way down. the tow line would be brought back down with a 4-wheeler. not sure if winchfest guys had they're act together. took them a long time to start the winch motor. they had several guys workingon it. eventually they got it going. you'd think they would've brought another winch just in case. the tow line was really thin rope. they were gearing up for big turnout. a turntablist was there. a band gearing up on the run. a booth selling Pabst Tallboys for $3.00. i dunno... red bull or pabst? lot of bystanders in street clothes. i watched some winch-boarders. there were a couple riders that were going big. the others were kind of mediocre. Airbag the airbag was going on too. from the chair i watched a snowboarder do a back flip and hit the back of the helmet on the jump. i heard the helmet bounce off the snow. rider was okay. might've been a female. bobble
Morning all the major runs were free of ski racing. milkrun had the airbag. conditions were excellent. blue bird skies. matt showed up with some cant plates on his burton bindings. after matt left i saw some other hardbooter riding a factory prime but never rode with him. only saw him for two runs. for all you locals that are lurking... the snow is definitely not going to get any better. now is the time. mama buck beckons. Camera Curse dave was at buck doing camera duty. just as i was doing a heel-side turn towards dave i felt and heard a popping sound from my rear boot. i eased off the turn thinking i was about to rip my heel off (its happened before). turned out it was the cant assembly. i had replaced this one last month before SES. the cant is on the inboard so i'm not sure what that means. i must be doing something wrong with my rear leg during heel-sides. i dunno... felt great while i was riding. i was able to fix my boots. need to order replacement parts. Scuff
Morningafter matt left i saw some other hardbooter riding a factory prime but never rode with him. only saw him for two runs. Before my ski lesson I saw a boarder riding an FP. Blue jacket - no helmet. Think he was about to give a lesson. I said hi - his name is Jeff. He is back in town after being away for A good long while. Told him about forum and MES.. Not sure if he was interested. Then again, he was also being approached by an intro "skier" at the time... Everybody, welcome Jeff to the carving community.
bobble
Evening i believe we got something like 10" of new snow. must have been a busy day for buck with school closings. decided to ride skis. good call. there were piles of snow everywhere but even on skis it was tough. ski tips were bouncing around. i was fine where it was packed down but everywhere else it was like hitting small jumps on every turn. totally out of control. milkrun was about the same. warners had half the run closed off for race practice. unbelievably, alex was there on a carve board. he didn't last long and switch to softies. i think riding softies would've been more fun than skiing. some pix... not sure what the deal is with the huge mound at the bottom. another... Questionable Grooming rode the chair a couple times with a ski patroller. he started talking to me about the snow, how great it was to ride, etc. he said buck was grooming the runs at 8 AM on top of the fresh powder. there was much gnashing of teeth and weeping in the ski patrol office. "why, why, why!?!?" he said while shaking his head. hell if i know. not that it matters to me but am kind of curious as to why the runs were groomed over the new snow? Sunday Mornings on another chair the same ski patroller made a dismissive comment about snowboarding about how they sit on their ass in the snow. i guess he figured he could open up to me since i was a ski brother. i said, "i snowboard, i don't usually ski... can't carve when its this soft and piled high". he turned to me and said, (okay, i imbellished the hot dang part). he added that he loved watching us. Gerg
Couple of reasons we groomed: the forecast was calling for fairly stiff winds at the back-end of the snow, so that was going to just blow everything into drifts, and expose nasty hard-pack below. Also, we tend to be somewhat steepness-challenged, and 10" of fresh powder, while beautiful and all, would be damn-near impossible for most Minnesota skiers & boarders to get through. Mound of snow @ bottom of Milk Run is for our Quarter-Pipe Dreams Competition this Thursday.

We still have plenty of base, but yesterday's rain didn't do the surface any favors. i went back out on skis. the g-team did an awesome job on crossroads adjacent to the lift towers. the trenches were fat and deep. no one else was taking that line. skiers right on crossroads was decent. i rode that most of the time as did everyone else. warners was not that great. it had small bumps or rolls that were hard to see in the flat light. red tail was okay. there's some ice where red tail and teachers pet come together. there's probably 2-4 inches of snow on top of ice. at the very top of the hill there's a small patch of ice poking through. bigwavedave
Will be out at Buck this Sunday. G-team is helping organize (the first?) Mn state High school snowboard championships. Great going Karl, ch4 5:30 news (weather-intro) showed "daredevils" racing alpine snowboards at Buck. Hopefully the high school snowboarding thing can get going like the existing HS ski programs. I suspect that kids who grew up snowboarding that are becoming parents will help fuel the program.
bobble
Evening fast snow. hard pack. very dry. crossroads... snow next to lift tower had rocks of snow. the snow guns are next to the towers so I guess when they positioned the equipment the snow got a little roughed up. milk run has bare ice at the top. rode my nirvana. snow would've sucked on my Donek. had a couple moments where the nirvana surprised me on how well it handled the rough stuff. bobble
Evening snow was hard and fast. really cold out. my hands and feet got cold after an hour i had to go in and warmup. crossroads... none of the snow rocks from yesterday. the area near the snow guns was immaculate. milkrun had new snow. didn't see ice. redtail was good. Fiber Versus Metal rode my donek FC1 for almost an hour. took a run down crossroads and didn't like it. it was twilight and no lighting. plus, i felt like i couldn't get low enough to the edge of the board. felt like i was going to blow out an edge on the hard snow. rode redtail until i got cold. waited for the lights to come on and switched boards to the nirvana. on my first run down crossroads i had perma-grin. :D:D:D:D :biggthump:biggthump the edges were biting into the snow and i was hauling ass too. the trenches were a little wide. the snow was so dry it was almost carving into chalk. none of it adhered to my equipment. rode till about 8:30pm. took some runs down redtail. earier on my donek i couldn't get the board to hold an edge near teachers pet. the nirvana held on. maybe 0 degrees isn't so bad? went back to my car to get my donek. got to the top of the run. first heelside carve the donek felt super stiff. transitioned to toe-side. right away i blew out my toe-side edge. i couldn't ride anymore and left. bobble
Evening conditions were excellent for carving... on a metal board. snow was better than yesterday. i did blow out a couple turns on crossroads. i blame myself, not the board. too far out over the edge. snow on milkrun was firm. some guy was teaching his son to carve on milkrun. i was coming down and he was on the chair. i saw him looking at me and started yelling "YEEEEEAAAAAAHH!!!!". several kids were asking about the board too. the board turns much sharper then my FC1. i was digging the small rolls on redtail just before teachers pet. lots of fun! saw another hardbooter but not for long. think he was with his family. Board Specs Grats on the new board! What are the specs? And can we get some pictures of her? thanks randy. its a Coiler Nirvana, length 174 (or 175), 12-14 variable sidecut with black p-tex topsheet. its slightly shorter than my FC1. not exactly anatomically correct... it has two "vanity" inserts near the front and rear bindings for mounting a GoPro. bruce installed them for free. you can see the front one in this photo. Edited March 14, 2013 by bobble i like turtles... DAMMIT!!!! after that it was impossible to carve but skiers were loving it. we both left after a couple runs. might go out later but on skis. thebionicman
Was pretty good this morning for March. Carves held up quite well, though my one mitt is about gone. One a different note, they were setting up the pond skip at the bottom of the half pipe, way to cold for me. Pretty sure I was in shorts in my back yard last year on St Patty's Day.
