ugh...

early morning gates were set up on crossroads, milkrun, olympic... and later on warners. by the time we got there the ski teams had already scraped crossroads.

there was some residual cord left. snow was okay for the first hour. light was flat. trenches were getting wide. running the same lines did not help to improve conditions. second hour it was chewed up. can only do crossroads so many times. i started hitting ice. there were a couple patches where the snow was scraped off and exposed the ice.

i did try that run behind milkrun but everytime i went down there was always people there to muck it up.

tried warners but some dude set up stubbies right down the center of the run. carved through it. erik wasn't sure if the guy flipped him off  or gave him a thumbs up :biggthump.

it was also getting crowded. had to leave early to drive ms. bobble to the airport. thought about going back to buck but got lazy.

met chad and adam (not sure if they're on bomber). good to see more hardbooters.

Happy New Year

I am glad I went to bed early last night. Arrived at Buck to see no cars, perfect groom, not a cloud in the sky, oh and -7 degrees.

For the first 15 minutes it was just me and one skier, the cord was super firm. Never had to worry about an edge not holding.

Around 10:30 it clouded up. Stayed till 2, turns out my shoulders hurt. Thanks BobD for the pointer.

had a late start this morning. met erik just as he was leaving.

conditions were tough. snow was fast and hard. if you fell, it would shred your clothes. i rode mostly upright and checked my speed. my edges had a hard time holding so my trenches were a little wide. the middle of the run was like riding over ball bearings. lots of ice marbles.

on the plus side, got cold temps and not many people were out this morning.

i stayed till 10am. as i left the ski jammers showed up in school buses. more incentive to leave.

2 notes: On Sunday Buck is hosting the Snowboard D-Team competition, which will be mainly located on Warner's Way. Not a huge group, but worth noting. Also, snowmaking will start up Sunday night and go for a few days, though not full force. Just a half dozen guns or so, but covering most of the area over those few days.

when i arrived the lot was 50% full. i had to park near ski school. oh sh!t.

got to the lift line. not many people. everyone was at warners. more yay for me!

snow was great! it was stiff and held up well. decent speed. was riding my rossi which i haven't rode yet this season. the light was not great at first but slowly improved. after 10AM the snow towards the middle of the run was getting chewed up. fell down and slid a ways. it was like sliding over rock candy. my new snowpants are now officially broken in.

at the bottom there were parents walking down towards warners for the snowboard competition. it was a mess. too bad there wasn't some sort of zip line or sled to tow these people around the backside. made things a little dicey when coming down. as a good citizen i slowed down when coming in and yielded the right of way. there were a couple skiers from ski challenge trying to thread through the mass of people at mach schnell. i don't trust those guys.

after an hour went into the chalet to warm up. i had a tough time finding a spot to sit down. all these people had brought in pallets of food and used it to mark territorial boundaries. delicious meats and cheeses catered from Costco were bountiful. crates of refreshments of all kinds were to be had; i.e. water, red bull, soda, coffee, etc. yes, all the creature comforts were hauled into the chalet; i.e. laptops, eReaders, GoPros, cameras, music, bags, newspapers, etc. as i passed the drinking fountain i heard someone ask, "did you see any microwave ovens???". hmmm. someone effed up and forgot to bring the microwave oven.

went back out. the sun poked through. something about the sun just made me giddy. i was tired from riding and feet were cold. sun kept me going.

later i switched to skis and rode for another 1/2 hour. hands got cold. left.

went in the evening. snow guns were blowing. conditions were slow. i overheard some skiers say the same thing. it was crowded. milkrun had races. saw a snowboard clinic, it looked like they were teaching adults how to carve in softboots. i think there was almost a dozen of them on the run.

skiers right of crossroads had thick accumulation of snow. skiers left was decent carving until halfway down and then the snow was thick and bumpy.

the trail behind crossroads as a volkswagon beetle parked under a snowgun. thing is huge.

changed my rear cant disk from a 6 degree to a 3 degree. not sure if it made a positive difference or not.

evening.

snow was good for carving. it was packed down. speed was good.

as usual, milkrun was busy with racing. so was olympic and warrens. skiers right on crossroads also had gates but it didn't bother me. the gates were set up really close to the fence. the new snow has changed the fall line somewhat that you would have to carve uphill a little bit to get to skiers right.

only complaint was there were more skiers. usually the place starts to thin out around 8pm but it kept going and going and going. every run i had to look over my shoulder or stop midway to look uphill. saw a few near misses between skiers. there was also a ski clinic for instructors going on. close to a dozen. i think they were from welch, had green jackets. too many of them. they were taking up the entire run. left at 8:30pm.

met a softboot rider that has some carving gear. bad with names, i think his name is bill. he said he lurks on bomber. bill, if you're reading this bring out your gear and ride with us.

evening.

almost the same as yesterday. alex was there. did not recognize him at first.

not as many skiers. place started to thin out at 8pm.

i tweeked my rear binding. i set it to have inward canting. not sure how much... i think its close to 3 deg. lift with 0.5 ~ 0.7 deg or more inward canting. didn't feel right.

evening.

of the past three nights, this was the best for carving. snow was mostly packed down from top to bottom. it was better running down the center of crossroads. more consistent. left thin lines in the snow.

changed rear binding back to 3 degree lift only. felt better than previous night but something doesn't feel right.

Extremely busy morning. Milk run had a course set up and the airbag. Warner's and redtail also had courses. Olympic had a course as always. Ski Jammers showed up and jammed up the lift lines.

The snow was soft and hero. It was a blast for first hour. Erik left at 10am. Too many people. There was a real dickish skier buzzing people on the run. The light was changing from flat to partly sunny within minutes. It was bizarre. The lift lines were intolerable. I did a lot of waiting at the top and bottom. Around 11:30am it started to thin out. At 12pm it was sunny. Stuck around till 12:30pm.

Drove by buck on my way to Mills Fleet Farm around 5pm. The main chair and teachers pet were not running. The wind was gusting.

Lowered the binding angles to around 55/57.

left Welch to check out buck. arrived at 12pm. looked like someone else made their mark with trenches. the snow was only slightly better than Welch but not by much. i was tired. took four runs and left.

got home. trent texted and said he was playing Halo on Xbox Live with scott. i joined in. i suck at Halo. i'm just cannon fodder. scott kicked both our asses even when trent and i were on the same team!!! need more people on Blue team.

That was me. It was a little busy until races were over at 10:15. I stayed till around 10:45. It was firm but crunchy. The first 5 runs where the best.

Grooming was great on Milkrun and Crossroads. Horrible on Olympic and Warners. I saw them take the groomer out on Warners but decided not to test it out.

morning

early morning it was cold. snow was really good. yes, you really should've been there.

erik and i had control of the hill until about 10AM. the crowds pushed us over to warners for awhile. around 11AM went back to crossroads and milkrun. snow was still holding up.

i've got too many air vents in my gloves. had to go in to warm up my hands under the hand driers. went back out. at 12 noon the runs were wide open. at 12:30pm, ski jammers started doing drills. at that point i was too tired from the cold and left.

had my board tuned at tonka cycle. i made a slight change to my stance on the board. i'm trying to minimize underhang on the front boot and overhang on the rear. i moved the rear binding back and lowered the angles of the bindings. i think the front is 55, rear maybe 50.

Crashed Ice

ms. bobble and i ventured over to st. paul to check out crashed ice. it was extremely cold out. i couldn't hold onto my camera for too long. we didn't stay long. before they started the races they got the crowd going by playing AC/DC "Hells Bells". red bull projected red, yellow, orange stage lighting on the cathedral to make the place look hellish. i bet it was a lighting technicians wet dream. unfornately i was a little to slow on the camera.

g-team was out at buck. it was extremely cool to see so many hardboot riders!

flat light but the snow was excellent for carving! when i arrived at buck i had very low expectactions. thought for sure that with the sleet rolling in and flat light that it would suck. turned out that the snow was almost hero! by the time i got to the bottom of the first run i was laughing to myself. :D

snow was grippy and held up well. it might've been slower than yesterday.

erik was turning g-team helmets around on the chairlift during their warm-ups.

ski challenge was on milkrun, g-team was on olympic. heard comments in the lift line from the ski challengers about the "raceboarders". it must've been a surprise for them to see so many riders. a couple skiers on the chairlift asked general questions about "raceboards".

sleet started coming in around 10:30am. i left at 11:30am when it started to really sting my face.
