Buck Hill 2012/2013

1st day of the season for me. i ran into a regular. i don't remember his name... might be dave. he's the guy that rides softboots and sometimes teles. wears a blue jacket. he said he's already been out five times at buck. i had

.

rode in softboots. went out in the afternoon. olympic, crossroads, milkrun, parts of the terrain park were open. snow was soft and icy under the snowguns. it was very crowded. if it weren't for the crowds i might be tempted to ride in hardboots but it would be rough. from the chair the snow looked fine but riding it was different story. snow was fast, then slow, then bumpy. at the bottom it really slowed down. my board would stick to the snow just getting off the chair lift.

obligatory photo on top.

only stayed an hour. lines got backed up. had no patience. the chair lift stopped frequently.

ran into our Lady of Buck Hill (what is her name?). she too had enough. she said she was going home to play Halo 4! a capitol idea!

went out for an hour in the morning. it was a typical sunday morning. light was flat light. rode softboots. tried to carve but my heelsides are terrible. i think it would've been okay to ride in hardboots for about an hour.

the chairlift has a white carpet and skis and boards don't slide over it well. i didn't realize it at first. i saw one kid trip and fall in front of the chair as it was swinging around. the lifty was a little slow on the e-stop and so the chair went right over the kid's helmet. i laughed. i thought the kid wasn't paying attention. when it was my turn my board stuck to the what i thought was snow and almost got tripped me up too. that's when i realized it wasn't snow, it was white carpet with just a hint of snow

went back out in the evening. kind of regretted it. the run was crowded with unruly little fhits. at the top of crossroads they would clot the top of the run, stamp the boards, etc. they would go skiers right to hit the burm over next to olympic then cut over to milkrun. i'm just a crasy insane old man. looking forward till the rest of the place is opened.

rode hardboots. took two runs. on third run at the top of crossroads i went over the nose. :angryfire

it happened near a snow pile adjacent to a snow gun. i had went in that direction to avoid some skiers. i wasn't going to fast. i was setting up for my first heelside turn in order to go towards skiers right. not sure what happened. there was a basket ball size gouge in the snow from my board. my front foot got twisted up inside the boot when the shell had partially collapsed (thankful for BTS). got up and just side slipped down. neck hurts right now.

i dunno ... from what little i saw the snow seemed good enough to carve. its a little rough at the bottom half of crossroads.

the white chairlift carpets are a pain. people have to almost walk across them to get the loading point.

went out last night with hardboots. temps were warm, around 30F. snow was soft. one of those days where you definitely don't want to put your hand down. the snow was thick in some area. the only runs i saw open are olympic, crossroads and milkrun.

i got locked up in two turns. think i had slowed down too much. i only tried carving the top quarter of crossroads. the most number of turns i had was four.

the rest of the run had thick pushed around snow that was bumpy. i didn't want to try carving through that crap. didn't want a repeat of the other night. i thrashed my arms around trying to swing the tail of the board. one area was really icy.

it was not fun at all.

if anything good is to come out of going was that i got to practice braking.

yay for me.

rode softboots. warm temp. not as much loose top snow from the previous night. packed down on top half of crossroads. might've been okay to ride hardboots but there were other contenders on the slope. the conditions were good for carving in softies. :D

there was a skier that was taking up the entire run -- from lift towers to olympic. i was riding down the fall line and he came from the side and cut right in front of me. i had to brake. when i ride and i see people in front of me i usually don't try to over take them (well, with rare exceptions :eplus2:), i pick a different line to avoid them. its an occupational hazard for us.

wish this weather would get colder.

rode softboots but i did bring my donek out just in case. very warm. about 40f. no groom. it was okay to ride in softboots but it got boring quick. left at 10:10am.

went carpet boarding.

arrived early at 8:30am. the ski patrol was doing drills. must've been close to 50 of them out on the run. when i got to the lift it was stopped. one of the patrols got tripped up on the white carpet and was ejected out of both skis.

the was run was groomed. mid morning it got choppy in a few areas. i chose poorly and rode soft boots. it was okay to ride but erik showed up and put me to shame. i dunno what i was thinking.

anyways, it was crowded with ski teams and the ski patrol.

after erik left i did this...

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/0o3TFy5Vw0CNKNgdBOL4jcrEaBtlVsEWgE2IWu1uvCk?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-03XwIJ9bVd4/UMOTFUOJOWI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/d96zqaMWUdI/s800/ski_1995.jpg" height="501" width="800" /></a>

haven't quite figured it out yet. it felt weird not to take my left boot out of the binding before getting onto the chairlift.

i guess i'll start out early with hardboots and switch if necessary.

arrived early at 8:30am. was chastised for showing up in softboots. i deserved it.

buck had groomed early morning but there was already accumulation of new snow. had 2-3 runs before erik show up.

i expected that erik would take a 1-2 runs and leave. nope. he was carving albeit slow at the top and laying it out towards the middle. i switched gear. it was very carveable as long as speed was maintained. it took me awhile to get adjust to the conditions. occasionally i would lose speed on a turn and fall over/into/through the snow. as always... "before performing any type of heel-side enema, talk to your doctor to see if its right for you."

had to clear my goggles frequently. conditions were so slow that it offset the visibility issue.

over on skiers right of crossroads there must've been 6 or more inches of untouched snow. it was fun floating through it.

tried the rope tow on olympic. extremely hard to grip the rope. it just slips through my glove guard. went down olympic and it was not fun. snow was deep and with push piles here and there. fell on my ass the 2nd time i tried to take the rope tow up.

towards noon the conditions were getting rough. the love was lost. snow was coming down heavier.

erik left around at 11:30am and i changed equipment. tried skiing. visibility was really bad. my goggles were getting covered by the snow on the way down. i could almost carve one or two turns at the top. the rest of the way i had to fight to stay upright. only did maybe 6 runs.

as i left, there was a cadillac spinning its wheels trying to go north on buck hill road. very slick conditions on the way home. blew through some stops signs to conserve momentum (if a stop sign has a white border it means its optional).

goooood times. hope to be out monday evening with colder temps.

went out for a few runs. it was too crowded. the parking lot was full, i had to park near the tubing hill.

snow guns are a blowing. crossroads is narrower with mounds forming under the guns. everyone was riding crossroads.

the snow was hard pack under the new snow. faster than i expected.

blue bird skies, cold temps, epic snow!!! high five! :biggthump

... but unfortunately lots of races going on milkrun, olympic and warren. there was also the so-gnar tour at the bottom of milkrun. the backside of milkrun was not conducive to carving. huge tire tracks up the back and then mini rollers.

Holy Rollers

only option left was crossroads but even that was was iffy. skiers right on crossroads has huge rollers. the rollers were so tall that you couldn't see people inside them from the top. in less than 4 runs i saw two accidents. people were taking a red sled down. ski patrol put up a slow sign. saw more people fall down even after the slow sign was put up. it was actually more entertaining to watch people on the rollers than so-gnar.

here's a nice profile shot...

from the chair...

the snow was on crossroads was very good but the run was very narrow and it got busy. the carving window peaked at 9:30am. at 10:00am it was too dangerous with ski racers warming up so i switched to skis. actually got a little better at carving down the backside with skis. not so much on crossroads.

at lunch time the crowds thinned out so i went and got my alpine board. carved for about half hour. snow was great up on top but towards the middle it was rough.

It Doesn't Work That Way

i was up at the top and this woman started freaking out. she was yelling "STOP!!! STOP!!!". she came around the corner of the shack to plead with the ski patrol, "my son didn't get off the chair!! he's still on it and going back down! you have to stop the chair!". i looked and the kid was almost past the first tower.

. she wanted the ski patrol to tell the lifties to throw the chairlift in reverse.

i think the kid was just tired.

rode in the evening. conditions were great! it was snowing lightly. some of the other snowboarders were carving too.

only complaint is that there must've been race training on crossroads over on skiers right. i ventured over there without knowing.
