New Board Porn thread 2012-13!

Thanks! Yeah had her out for a much better test today. Chased down a hardbooter but he wasn't really carving, more side slipping all his turns. Oh well it was a fun day and this board rails!!! :)

Please don't take this as criticism because I don't know much about this board design...Isn't the nose the squared end? Looks like the bindings are mounted to orient the board with the rounded end forward...Maybe just an optical illusion or maybe I'm completely wrong...In any event, a hot looking board!

Actually my bindings are set negative on the rear foot so probably why it looks that way in the one pics. I do ride squared end forward! lol

Ahhh...Duck???

Yup, -12/+12... I still do a fair bit of switch riding and frestyle while in the off-piste, so I'll be sticking with the stance I've had on all my freeride boards.

A few of the boards for this year.

RJM

What are the bindings on the UFC?

New Coiler. EC style, 175 x 22 14/17 sidecut. This thing rocks!!! Super solid through chunky snow. Slow speed turns, fast turns, no problem.

That's looks cool! I see tons of positive feedbacks on russian EC boards on Coilers. This makes me want one too :)

They are thebest soft boot carving binding. Better than Catek. Phiokka also makes alpinebindings, however nothing compares to the Bomber Sidewinders. I wanted a stiff softboot binding and I did a lot research, as we all do, people that ride them lovethem.

I figured it was something like that but...Who knows? Mentioned in the interest of helpfulness...Ride fast take chances :^)

No worries thanks mate! TLN is trying to convince me to go back to a more forward stance. I started riding in '92 and had a forward stance at that point. I even soft boot raced a bit in the late 90's. I slowly moved from a +5/+25 or so stance, to -3/+18, finally to symmetrical duck somewhere in that stretch of time.

Since freestyle is the next frontier for me (instead of just big air, I'd like to start doing some spin tricks the occasional 180 or 360) I think I want to retain the freestyle binding focus for now. I can't wait to ride with some hardbooters at NES to see if I can come close to hanging with true carvers! :)

I know about Phoikka hardboot bindings, but never heard about softboot.

You're right, softboot carving is hardly ever compatible to hardboot, especially once you have the skills, and now for me it doesn't look to optimal to try to get something out of softboot carving. Once i tried hardboots, it was like "wow! that edge hold is incredible!". So for me softboots are for freeriding. *I still WTB swallowtail and put hardboot binders on it.

But who knows, i can change my mind with time ;)

I think Virus aint best board for freestyle. It sounds like a bad idea to get a top-level freeride board and use it for freestyle. You can do 180 and 360 on it, no doubts, especially once you can do it, but it'd be harder on a virus, and less forgiving if something goes wrong.

Oh absolutely! Yeah if I get to the point where I can do a 360 off a little cliff or cornice one day I'll be thrilled. I don't mean I'll take my Virus into the park! :D

I guess my form of Freeriding at this point involves some switch riding, so that's why I'm sticking with the duck stance at the moment. Not saying I'll never try forward again, but I can carve pretty good with this stance at the moment. Totally different position and mechanics than eurocarving of course, but I'm aiming to get at least close to similar results while still letting me play in the trees. :)

I'm not ruling it out yet at this point! lol

You can be beaten up, once saying that you can carve in duckstance on such a forum ;)))

Kidding :)

I was saying pretty the same, until i tried hardbooting. I can do a carved turn on my neversummer, i can see a deep trenched i made and i can go fast and feel safe. Now i realized, that simplest hardboot setup really rocks when it comes to carving. On a softboard i can so 180 and sometimes 360 and that don't need a -15 on my backfoot. -3 forks fine for me, and it looks like perfect angle in trees. And as i got my old board, i'd mount a 15/-15 really wide duckstance and give it a try.

Sounds good! Yeah I'm going to put my money (or my reputation lol) on the line when I join some of the hardbooters at the NES meet in January. I chased down a hardbooter yesterday at Lake Louise but the guy wasn't even carving, he was side slipping every turn and just pretty much going fast down the fall line. Not like the vast majority of hardbooters I see that spend as much time laying down as possible.

I'm just excited that another season is upon us! And I've got a new toy to play with... lol

I'm not experienced hardbooter, but this sound like he was a racer, and the others were a carvers. It seems like a big difference between those two. Probably more experienced riders can tell you exact difference, but i see it like this. Racers go down the hill and slipping the turns, and carvers go across making a thin trenched behind. I've tried slalom racing this year for a 1st time, and it was really tons of fun!

At NES you will get to ride with some talented free-riding carvers who leave good trenches. Hopefully you'll also get to ride with Freddy, a NorAm racer who usually takes a straighter line although I'm sure he can carve some nice Cs if he wants to. I'll let you decide for yourself if he skids down the hill. Good luck keeping up with him on softies, or any equipment, really:

Yeah this guy was barely getting his edges off the snow, pretty much doing advanced slider turns to make it around bends in the runs but otherwise not turning much. I saw him all over the hill that day riding with a backpack on... Not sure what he was really up to!

Sounds like fun! Judging from the vid he wasn't skidding at all, just taking a wider/straighter line but still up on his edge. I'll take the challenge of keeping up! :)

Here's a vid of some turns I did at Nakiska last year. The snow was more/less hardpack and I obviously wasn't carving, but this is what I like to do for fun! :D

This 3-hole custom x 164 was my go to for the past 2 seasons. I mixed it up with a Burton fusion165 that I ran at 33f/18r. I have since donated this board to Theo/ king Crimson here on bomber. I run the custom x at 24f/9r. I have no issues carving switch toe or heel side on this board at full speed. The new to me custom Donek was intended as a hard boot setup for Big Canuck( thanks Kurt!) and I will be test driving it in two days. Current stance on the Donek/ bamboo core is 24/12. Hopefully, video and photos to come. Note. All current photos have me at 220lbs. Thanks to LDP starting at the beginning of summer. I have dropped 30+ lbs. cannot wait to kick off winter on Monday at the local ski hill. Happy carving. Slarving is not carving and power skidding is worse than falling leaf...

Just received my brand spankin' new Coiler Nirvana Freecarve. It's 180 cm long with a 21 cm waist, 12/14m sidecut and 8mm of taper. Third picture down shows it side by side with my other rides, 2001 Tanker 200 and 2005 Coiler All Mountain 172. Quite a different shape. If my new NFC had the same nose/tail profile as the Tanker, it would be a 207. If it were the same as the AM, it would be a 190.

Note that in the comparison pic it still had the protective clear sheet on, so it looks a little dull. The nose picture is in sunlight and is the best indicator of the true colour of this snakeskin BAMF. Bottom three pictures show camber, nose and tail profiles.

I'll be test-driving this new machine at Sunshine next weekend.
