www.oldsnowboards.com Posted July 28, 2011 Report Share Posted July 28, 2011 It was a somewhat common modification to stiffen a "SkiBoard" with an alpine ski. The plastic had a nasty habid of folding right at the end of the skateboard. The original "Skiboard" came with a tool to shave the edge of the plastic down to adjust the flex. So, as a result, if your skiboard was already shaved down and it was too soft, adding the ski would stiffen it up. The other common mod was to cut a swallowtail into the plastic. This particular board was definitely "Tricked Out" Commonly referred to as the "Lonnie Toft" because Lonnie was one of the first "Cross-over" pros. He had his own "Pro-Model" 10" , "Pig Board" that was offered on the skiboard. You could also by it without the LT skateboard and just mount your own wide board on it. The "Flying Banana" became the first Sims Skiboard in production. Tom basically used it to enter the market quickly , sell skateboards and get his name out there while he created some of the most advances wood snowboards in the industry. It’s pretty much August now and I am wondering if this is really slow in terms of new boards. Maybe the big chunk comes between August and the beginning of the season. If not, it would really not be a lot of new boards and kinda bad for the already very limited industry of ours. Or, most who received their toys did not post, could be another reason. This was an idea we had for a Midwest All Mountain Ripper, somthing I have nicknamed the "Lividd" She's a 169 AMT, VSR, Asymetrical Core, with a little X-tra in the boot. I have yet to carve her, My only weekend on her was at Mt. Rose and it just dumped by the foot each of the three days I had there....She took the deep pow like an Pro! Texilium top, with matching plate , the newest version of the Tinkler design. 182cm 19cm waist progressive sidecut + Low square nose , slightly decambered Custom wood core, full layer of carbon, other good stuff. Stiffer than sh/t Purpose: All around travel carver, simple, shorter, lighter, super clean, less bells and whistles for the folks to hit or ask questions about. Tinklers are always well built but sometimes the gadegetry makes my scratch my head, I have a friend here in Colorado with a couple and hope to install a deer whistle on the noses just to complete the ensemble. Some pics of the plate hardware when you get a chance please. What is the SCR Bryan, progressive from what to what? Season is only 70 or so days out here, time to start thinking about it! Think Snow! Anxious to hear how that plate system works. Cool Hans. Last time we talked Mike had not yet made the system public. This is the first full production snowboard of that version. I rode the proto type at the close of my season last year. Love the height and feel big time. I still have the GS proto in my shop. Anxious to give this shorter board a spin. Board number two will have all the cool systems I have grown to appreciate over the years. TNT, Snow Stix, Plates etc It will be the culmination of all the systems on the shape I like the best. Now I just need to get to where I can physically make the best use of all the features. Mike has built a number of boards not displayed on Bomber. A number of east coast BX riders, juniors especially. His long time relationships with some of the leading riders, coaches in alpine continue to draw out inovation and development. Dude. Loved your last photos you at work!! Very cool!! We don't see many deer on our rough groomers. I certainly don't blame them for grazing on the ultra buff of CO though. I too hope to be galavanting through the lovely CO forests this coming season. Simply put, if it did not enhance the ride we wouldn't do it. What I can tell you is that everytime I ride another board I enjoy them but can't wait to get back on one of my favorite Tinkler system boards. Allot of factors in play. Conditions, weight, riding style, etc. Fortunately we have a great diversity of builders doing excellent work for our small but passionate group of enthusiasts. Those that live near one of those builders and even get to ride with them are particularly lucky. Something about riding with the guy that builds your board seems to help create a good match. Certainly not required, but doesn't hurt either!! I expect more of the details will be coming out soon. SCR is a blend approx. 13-16 maybe? Side note: Mike really had to twist my arm to go "Low Nose". Call me old school, but the trade off has not completely convinced me of value yet. Still considering a topsheet, it would have too pretty cool to warrant the change. Some of the new graphics are very tempting. Some very nice art out there! This particular board will serve the "Big Boys" and strong riders as well. A board that I can perhaps offer as a "Demo" when traveling. It is hard to hand over one of my full system boards to someone. I have no interest in dealing with issues related to loaning high value items. Just too stressfull. I covet them much too much. I don't care to have to "Train" others how to care for equipment. 90% of BOL members are super carefull and respectful. Memories of handy a 2000$ snowboard to someone and then watching them immediately jam the tail into hard snow still reverberate through my skull. Bruce was deciding between a 21vs 22 cm waist, went with 21.5. Mike T Posted August 7, 2011 Report Share Posted August 7, 2011 Left to right: 2012 Coiler VSR Mid+ 180 Plate Flex (was an SES demo) 2012 Coiler NSR 180 Regular Asym 2011 Coiler SL 161 XXT+ Regular Asym The NSR is a different flex- quite a bit softer in the middle than other NSRs I've ridden, and a bit stiffer behind the back binding. It's actually a very similar flex pattern to the SL (and probably similar to Al's new AM as well). I was in line for a 180 VSR Mid+ no-plate asym, but wound up trying the new-flex NSR after Bruce raced on it at USASA nationals, and liked it better than I liked the black 180 VSR demo @ SES. The green NSR and the SL are both insanely grippy and both love to catch air during edge changes. Very poppy. A different ride from other Coilers I've been on (which is a lot of Coilers). I rode the SL back to back with the AM 165 demo @ SES, they are very similar boards aside from waist width, nose length and the extra stiffness behind the back binding. You can REALLY feel the difference in the tail. The SL really carries a lot of energy from turn to turn, where the AM does not - the AM is easier to ride but the SL, is a more rewarding ride.
