  1. and sometimes you have to pick the apples from the ground and turn them into a pie.

  3. i skied off and on for about 3-4 times a year since the late 70's. never really did anything for me and i just went downhill fast. in 1999 i broke my bindings on my used 20 year old skis and my son talked me into trying snowboarding. i loved it and bought some equipment. took some lessons from a lvl 4 casi instructor and progressed quickly. the hill was open to me!!! got bored of boarding and tried skis again as skiing well had escaped me. it felt good enough for a couple runs that i found some used skis and bought some new bindings and ski boots. took some high end lessons and within 2 hrs was carving gs turns at high speed. Snowboarding definitely assisted in the progression of skiing well, as boarding taught me about pressure, edging, steering and timing. i'm still learning but skiing has become fun and it hasn't mastered me anymore. i'm now up to 4 pairs of skis in my quiver within 1 year. only 1 more pair to go and i will be happy.
  4. the experts say that x-c skate skiing is a 3???? i went yesterday and did 2.5 kms in about 18 minutes. i think i lost a lung back on the trail. that'll teach me to not use lift access.
  5. ""It can be like marriage, the "old lady" is not a hot super model, but she is yours and you know her. "" well said Steve
  6. 2nd last run of the day last year, i hit some pretty high speeds. i hit a bump that knocked me around unexpectedly. i recovered and i thought, that doesn't feel right. i did the last run and had to sit down part way. i rested for a couple of minutes, got up and went into the lodge. i pulled my foot out of the boot and put pressure on it. no problems. i put some twisting pressure on the ankle and just about squealed like a stuck pig. i looked at the bar keep and ordered a beer as i realized the season was now officially over. it was about a month before the ankle was better. and this was with hardboots on.
  7. i know a girl at silverstar mtn in vernon bc who is a casi level 3 snowboard instructor. she taught me how to really carve on soft boots. i watched her drag her tuque when in a carve toeside and then flipping over to a heel side and trying to do the same thing again. and again. and again. and again. she was phenomenal to watch!!!!!! and this was with softboots. apparently she's part way to her level 4 and her form on hardboots is very nice. sometimes its the rider and not necessarily the equipment that can make things happen. n.b. she was riding duck-ish
  8. after reading all the good time stories i have to respond. my second board cost me a divorce. the ex came back home after a trip to visit her family that was to help clear her head. i was just starting to soft boot board and i had just bought my second soft boot board under the rules of acquisition of sports gear. i.e. the gear had to be bought with overtime money. which it was. anyway the board i bought was a Voile Split 73. (aptly named i might add) The ex came in the door, looked at my new board and said "I see you bought a new snow board". i said "yup" and a few days later we decided to split. that board cost me about 500K in the divorce. So when people ask me why divorce costs so much i tell them, "Because its WORTH IT!!!!!! You get what you pay for. The girlfriend of 5 yrs has taken up skiing as she tried s/b's and failed miserably at it. several lessons and approximately 8-10 times on the hill, along with some cracked ribs and sore wrists. BUT SHE IS OUT THERE ON THE HILL WITH ME!!!!!!! She looks at my quiver of Alpine boards, skis and soft boot boards and realizes i'm at a hill instead of a bar. And shes good with it. Girlfriends ROCK!!!!!!!!
  9. Steve in Oregon, yes there was. Natasha RICHARDSON. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29733775/ and my own stories. i've had several falls in cycling, road and downhill, and have replaced several helmets. i'm still talking and able to talk without drool coming out. a friend of mine, who just started wearing a helmet last year, had a close encounter with a tree and a perfectly inelastic collision with a little broken branch that penetrated the plastic shell and into the foam. he is a true believer in helmets now as he figures that the branch would have penetrated his melon.
  10. when in rome....do as the romans. when in Whistler.....Prior. AMF or MFR for soft boot boards
  11. 2 pints max or else i may as well stay in the lodge. i've had 3 once and it was the worst riding i've ever had. couldn't stay on edge and kept falling over. one pint is good but really doesn't quench the thirst.
  12. Dalbello Avanti V8 ski boots, size 26 liner, 26.5 shell. New in box. They have soft-hard stiffness switch and 3 position lean switch, so can be used for carving. TrueFit2 liners, a with funky electrical device going into the insoles (I believe it’s a warmer). If the simpler TrueFit liners were desired (also new), I could do that for $20 less. would you be interested in selling just the insole warmer? greg
  13. hope i got the right url. this mad tv spoof came out 3.5 yrs ago apparently
  14. "Dating yourselves" says the young fella from dawson creek. i started skiing in the middle 70's a couple times a yr. i never really enjoyed it but hated being beaten by a sport. xc skier, slalom water ski, speed skater and softboot boarder 1999. loved the sport even tho it gave me a really bad concussion on the 3rd day. bought a helmet for the next season and haven't looked back. started hard bootin and skiing march 2009. love the control and speed that ski boots and hard boots give, but it is still filler for between snowfalls and when the groomers are nice.
  15. i have to admit when i first saw the ad i didn't take notice as i refuse to use TD. now that i see it again it my first reaction was WTF! at least they are showing the couple wearing hemets
  16. i have gone the other way. i went from soft boots to picking up hardbootin for boards AND skiis. Soft booting was starting to bore me silly and i wasnt' having any fun on the hill. I tried Hardbooting and my face went WOW!!! these things rail!!!!! where i am, there aren't any half pipes to spice it up and the grooming can be the sh$t$. anyway, i notice that when i'm getting tired on the hardboots, and depending on conditions, i will switch to skis or softboots as these are easier based on my conditioning at the time. if theres a decent amount of fresh powder i don't even use skis or the hardboots but use my softies with my powder board. home mountain is powder king in northern bc. however, if conditions are marginal i won't be using the soft boot setup as its much less precise. i'm not someone who can tell you what scr my boards are. i just go out and have fun. i experiment all the time with my setups and i'm itching to try my hardboots on my powder board. so my thoughts are this. rent or borrow to see if you can get accustomed to softboots as its not as demanding or as precise as hardbooting.
  17. try this link. not sure if its what you're looking for http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/search.php
  18. V2N 3V7. USPS ground IS my preferred method of shipping unless there is a cheaper method. greg
  19. Greetings Calgarians, I'm going to be in Calgary for the christmas season and was looking to hook up with some riders that have knowledge of the best runs on the hills for carving, after that. say the 27 or the 28th. i'm even willing to commute to Kicking Horse for the day if someone is willing to go. let me know. sunrise at mag-net dot com thanks. greg
  20. i've used pam also on my step ins and it needs to be reapplied each and every time ya got out. i just stuck a can in with my equipment bag so it was always with me.
  21. WOW!! i had no idea when i got into this forum that i would so be drawn in to the antics of some of the posters. I'm a softboot instructor of several years who enjoyed teaching grades 7-8 how to snowboard. Due to my current location i can only dream about sliding down the hill to experience my curves. my only solution to this is earning my turns. i'm a newbie to hardbooting and also just picked up skiing and luuvvv the sensation of real speed. i picked up some voelkl race tigers this year so i can hit the slopes in silverstar and sun peaks while on holidays. i have a (SHAMELESS PLUG for COILER) coiler amw 172 06GN2 7.7 bought from Gustav at silverstar, that is my main ride as it goes fast and it let me carve up some nice linked trenches right from the start. i have read this thread from start to finish and was quite glad to hear that Bruce uses some good old fashioned, lets do it and "GIT ER DONE" attitude. As for the rest? it gave me interesting reading but i'm quite happy to just ride and sometimes even hang out in the parks and push my envelope. thanks to all the engineers who dream this stuff up and apply it to real world problems cuz I hated math even tho i was in an engineering program at college. So i will continue to benefit from all your thinking. thanks again. greg
  22. my last marriage broke up when she saw my new Voile "Split 173". now i can buy what i want without interference. I guess the board was aptly named. although it certainly would have been cheaper to have not bought it. and Kurt, will do. greg
