Allee
Anyone have experience rafting in these locations? A couple of my girlfriends in Calgary are keen to do a white water rafting trip this year, and we thought it might be fun to make a long weekend out of it and travel somewhere. Any thoughts or recommendations?
Slow Eddie
Some fun creekboating during the spring thaw up here, but nothing compared to CO. You might want to check out some of the outfits in Maine if you're keen on New England: the Kennebec, Dead, and parts of the Penobscot are perrenial faves. jimcheen
Hey Allee There is a place in the 1000 Islands area. Google"Black River Rafting". JC
Mike T
Oregon has some good whitewater. If you plan your trip May - August you could ride at Timberline in the AM and raft/paddle in the PM in the same day!
Allee
Ooh, I didn't think of Oregon. Rumour has it it's nice down there :-) ...and from Calgary that would be a road trip and not a plane fare. Hmmm... I'll do some checking! Keep the suggestions coming! bobdea
ME and VT, NY all have the goods for that but CO, UT, MT WY have better weather generally and consistent conditions thing is that on the east coast of the US is that NYC and boston are just a few hours of driving away if you'd like to go to either or to snag the cheap flights. dingbat
Most of the folks I work up at the ski hill with guide at Zoar (Willy's link). If you were to come down this way, the Monroe Bridge dryway trip is a bit bigger and the Millers river is good too. Zoar gap is way more memorable if you do it in the pitch dark and snow with ice forming around your feet in the bottom of your friend's little self-bailer. two_ravens
Lots of good whitewater in Idaho as well!
Allee
K, got your message and passed it on - good suggestion! Choices, choices ... New England and a weekend in NYC? Or local and a drunken road trip? Whee!!
D.T.
While I love Colorado, you should checkout Idaho since it's a little closer.

Guest GQuentin
Hi Allee, You can't go wrong with OR, but I also love CO. I would go to Southern CO, particularly Durango. The White Water, Mountain biking and just about everything else you can do in the outdoors is amazing. (Good Margaritas too :D) I used to live there for 3 years and loved it. Cheers Quentin
photodad2001
if you come east...look at maine...hands down. Are you kidding? New River Gorge WV is the place to go on this side of the Mississippi. Wait, Dead River is in Maine isn't it?

I've never been on the New but have kayaked the Gauley in West Virginia - that is certainly a worthy piece of whitewater as well , and plenty of rafting companies to choose from! Northern Colorado is about 30% above normal snowpack levels this year and southern Colorado has been getting way more snow. don't forget to check if you will need a permit

Kimo
My friends are all rafters/kayakers and they are absolutely drooling over the Colorado snowpack. It's something like 160% of average right now. Just think about how buried Aspen was. Colorado should have a very good river season this year. Check out the snowpack here. thebionicman
I'll be on the Arkansaw river for my first time rafting over Memorial day weekend. This looks awesome!
two_ravens
I'll be on the Arkansaw river for my first time rafting over Memorial day weekend. This looks awesome! Which section? I make the trek down to paddle Brown's Canyon in a squirt boat several times each summer - super fun! The Numbers are good too, and a bit more difficult, but Brown's is just such a cool canyon... :p
tpalka
If anyone comes down to kayak anything on the Arkansas River let me know, maybe I could join you... any section is fine :) tom.
D.T.
Tom - Is that a Mitchell stick I'm seeing in the photo? hmmm... Mitchell good!
tpalka
Sure is a Mitchell -- my friend Chris (in photo) has been padding with it for 10-15 years now? Mitchell is nice, but it's no Jimistick! tom.
two_ravens
Still have 2 wood/carbon custom Mitchell Premiers for surface boating that I started using in the mid-90's. They've been across the pond and back, and have seen action on many rivers here at home - awesome paddles! Nothing but Jimistyx for squirting though...nothing else compares.
