  1. will be sending that to a few friends...nice !
  2. kjl, i'm in agreement with you. this is one of the best paragraphs i've ever read on BOL: "I don't think he's a "hero", but I don't think two bad decisions are enough to warrant bashing on the dead guy for being an idiot. I think there are plenty of people who are more deserving of focusing the hate on than some perfectly nice guy who the media decided to latch on to. Like, either or both political parties in their role in either getting us into or trying to sabotage this war we need-to-win/shouldn't-be-in, depending on your flavor, or John Edward, the guy who pretends to talk to the dead and preys on the sorrow of dead people's relatives for financial gain, or people who make hot dog buns come in packs of 8 when hot dogs come in packs of 10, or the lack of snow we have this year, and how it will be worse every year as global warming destroys the glaciers, or the left-wing econuts who won't shut up about this whole global warming myth." was chuckling.
  3. We've established that some bad decisions were likely made. We're humans, we make mistakes. No point in continuing to pounding the nail into the coffin here. The dude is dead. nothing will change that, whether he was right or wrong. Justin, I think you're just venting here, but there are other things that cost a lot more money?? "Oh, and if you choose not to heed this advice and head to the mountains unprepared, don't come to New Hampshire. I don't want to pay for your rescue/recovery and I don't want to see the media buzzing around while I'm trying to relax on my portch." Healthcare, which you are paying much much much more for b/c of other's negligence of their own health. "Fatasses stop eating fast food b/c I don't want to pay for your healthcare." Good luck with that.
  4. I'm not disputing that is appears he may have made mistakes and/or bad decisions, but it's sorta moot point now and a father and husband is dead, so it would be nice to show a little respect and compassion. the guy is dead and you're calling him idiot, fool, whatever. put yourself in his family's shoes. let's look at a similar reverse, hypothetical situation: Some guy from the Oregon backwoods was visiting DC and wanted to show his family the monuments at night and got lost and ended up in SE DC and then his car broke down and he went to get help and was murdered (a definite possibility in 1/2 the city), I wouldn't be like "oh the guy's an idiot" after he's was killed. of course the country boy shouldn't have become lost in the big city, especially at night, but he (hypothetically) did, and i wouldn't blame him for his own death. again, yes, it seems that not the best decisions were made, but it's a moot point now, the guy is dead. he did what he could but was not able to prevail in the end. it can also serve as a reminder re: being prepared for the mountains and the dangers of going up there, but no need to disrespect like that.
  5. per alpinecarving: "Shin bang When the shin rubs or pressures against the boot cuff, creating a painful bruise." that's chaffing shin bang vs. impact shin bang (or maybe you have both, which would really suck) is there a point to riding if you're in so much pain? riding is supposed to be fun. personally i think 11 hours + some other factor (boots too tight? wrong angle of something?) is responsbile. i'd really look at your setup. do you have a ton of lift on the rear and flat on the front? could also really just be you need more insulation b/w your liner and shin?
  6. what product did you use exactly? thx,
  7. i've had at least 1 case of it. it definitely bothered me- physically and mentally. I couldn't even go 70% some of the time and def. not 100% for the last 1/3 of last season. It was really bad for a few weeks then got a bit better. I found it took at least a month of no riding to fully heal. I had x-rays to confirm it wasn't some type of stress (or other) fracture. From my experience, it is very important that you address and reduce swelling asap if you want to enjoy the rest of the season (unless you don't mind riding in a lot of pain). "eliminator" tongue has helped me, especially as my legs and calves, esp., are skinny. The tongue takes up room. I think an alternative to this is injectable foam. in response to a previous post, i firmly believe it can happen to anyone, though i think rider with small calves (like myself) are more susceptible, though that's debatable. there's all that force you are creating and applying, all that pressure into the boot tongue, then you just catch an edge or fold the nose, and the momentum will continue to take your body over the top of the boot (i think it's teh cuff, specifically) where your the boots ends yet b/c it's a tight fit and a hardboot, the part of your leg inside the boot will move very little or not at all. yeah, that's gonna hurt, esp. b/c the skin is so thin on the shin.
  8. got some 23s from a few seasons ago...there wre too small for me. bought from bomber and not a lot of use
  9. many of my co workers are meteroligists (i work for a weather company) and this is an El Nino year. one of them says this means milder temps but more precip. to me that means more snow if you're at a good eleveation, otherwise a ****ty winter. he himself is not convinced of the phenomenen, though. the DC area certainly is way above monthly averages, which can be foudn on the net. it's currrently 57 out. i've yet to have my first day. it'll happen, i'm remaining patient.
  10. does Donek's freeride model have the same awesome edge hold as the FC? and is the Donek freeride stiffer than other freerides of the same size? those who've ridden feel free to chime in. thx,

i find that hard to believe. who exactly is this dr? does he recommend a diet of sweets?

in a way the saying "everything is bad for you!" is true. so for most people, it's about finding balance. i've noticed HFCS is in tons of things. occassional sodas- i could think of much worse things (smoking, totally unbalanced diets). Some jobs (shift work, demanding IT) just seem to cause guys to go crazy with soda. I knew of one guy who drank a liter a day- at least. I think it's good to question some of the drs who write these books, too. i mean, a lot of people can write books these days. there are tons of "health / nutrional" books. i don't think most people need books to know if they're living a relatively healthy lifestyle (regular exercise, good diet, healthy weight, moderate alchol consumption, no smoking, etc). personally, i'm a fan of broccoli (raw and cooked) and blueberries. it allows me to morally justify any crap i may eat. you know broccoli is "fighting the good fight" for your body! oh, and dark chcolate is good.

    dehydration

this is a sorta scary thread. so i have a bad habit of opening a bottled water and leaving it out overnight or putting it back in the fridge. is it ok to drink sometime the next day? the next week? the article on coke is scary. i don't drink much at all, but this country is addicted to caffeine! my dad is a dentist and says it's horrible for your teeth, which i think most people know
  14. someone posted pics of one of the PB riders (Joerg, I think) doing some fabulous looking grabs. is he also really flexbile i'm thinking?
  15. you'll love hardbooting. just remember a fwe things: 1. everyone has an opinion on almost everything 2. first few hours (or first day or two) may be frustrating- don't give up 3. as other's have mentioned, proceed with caution re: jacking angles up too much on softie board. it'll feel different for sure. consider jacking angles up gradually. hardboots will feel diff't. 4. i'll see you my alp 157.5 if your interested (email me).

  18. one of the experts can chime in here. i have no idea if this is the problem but Sean did tell me this re: sulfur smell " I would definitely watch how tight you are making the screws. If they are difficult to loosen, ie take a lot of torque, break free and give off a sulfer odor, you're overtightening your screws" obvoiusly be careful. hope the smell / problem disappears.
  19. is it a sulfur smell? Donek Sean (i think it was him) told me this could be bad....
  20. i wear a boeri that covers the ears and have used duct tape to attach ear buds to the inside of the foam. run the wires back along the bottom padding of the helmet and then just enough slack to attached to your mp3 player and they (wires) should be out of the way. i ride with my mp3 palyer in my front jacket pocket. another option is the armband for the mp3 players. that worked well for me- this is better for flash mp3 players, as they are more durable than those with Hard drives, and you may fall on you your shoulder or arm. if you have a camelbak, you can wrap the wire around the shoulder straps, although this will be a pain when taking the camelbak off. be creative, and buy headphones with relatively short wires. ps yes people will think you are attempting to wear a cracked helmet with all the duct tape on the outside- it only adds to the fun of riding an alpine board, mass confusion =)
  21. nice 1st day report. Welcome..... To The Machine,......
