Dusty Bottle

Sunday Funday! Blue skies, gentle breeze, near perfect snow, limited yahoos (one noted exception) and for those affected by such, very little traffic. Ice even made a Rathskeller libation appearance, with news of upcoming on-slope shenanigans. Hope the doc gives you the green light and you're making turns again in the next couple weeks. The absolute event of the season however, was the drive-by pelting Mario bestowed upon an unfortunate interloper, who skied aimlessly out of the trees and on to the groom, not looking up slope and then just stopped... in the direct path of a steam roller. He had no idea, he had just entered, "The Mario Zone". I can only imagine the dog-on-a-bone grin on Mario's face, as he tightened up a heelside turn, just in time to rip what I can only describe as the spray from a heeled-over slalom water ski. Yes, there were definitely ice bombs directed into the dumbfounded twig's body, but the 15' high arc of spray that showered down on the virtual snowman, was a true work of art. Little did the twig know how close to death he had just come, as he spit out snow and retorted, "I did look!" In the end no shatting was witnessed, but I nearly wet myself laughing. Here's to healing friends, sunburned teeth and virtual snowmen! Til next week... James

Fun? Understatement. Legal? Jury's out. Those in attendance? An excellent gaggle of hooligans from near and far! Saw more smiles and heard more panting of "Let's do that one again", than I can remember. In spite of the occasional pocket of soft snow, Lovey gave us a rare and fabulous day of sunshine and lack of breeze. Even the out of state, Carharrt-clad interlopers seemed lighter than usual. Lots of hoots and "Whoa, check it out." from the lifts above and pondered starting an autograph line for Ryan. Despite a few slopeside near misses, everyone departed the Rat with only silly grins and sore muscles. Great to see Rachel again and meet Kristen. And thoroughly enjoyed meeting and riding with the visiting NM crew of Yamifumi, Brad and Davey! Hope to see everyone again soon! Until next week... James

Dude, you were having a rippin' good time, layin' some schweet trenches, up to that point. I was glad to see the other guy ok, but FWIW, noobies shouldn't be butt-slip-sliding across blue runs, especially below drops. But, as he said, "It happens.", so maybe it wasn't his first time. Anyway, listen to the docs and maybe they can get you fixed up in time for the Dancing with the Stars finale. Best wishes and keep us in the loop on your recovery! James

Yep, a great day and a great crowd of hooligans for the Lovey closer! Dennis, thanks for the photos, sorry for your board loss. Kai, you looked super smooth on that SG! And we can't forget the the Cinco de Mono riders, who assisted with run destruction. In retrospect, we (or I) missed Mario's (no injuries – no one died) toast. A-Basin's trying to make June. Nyquil addiction - Some kinda crud canceled my Sunday plans the last couple weeks, but I'm not giving up on the season. I tried biking a few miles Saturday, but the body revolted. I'll hit it again today, shooting for next Sunday. Congrats, Jibber Pete! You always were a stylish slope side icon. Does this mean you've already applied the Krylon? Hope to see you kids next week! What size are on the liners?

Hailey and I were down at the Valley, working on balance and turns. She took her first lift ride on #7 and loved it. When I tried showing her how to do the falling leaf she said, "That's no fun, I'd rather just start straight and then make turns." Well, okay then. In a word... YES! But first, a big "Thank You" to Jim and Angie for hosting yet another awesome Demo Day! I rode a few boards and came to some conclusions/opinions. Although I like speed, I'm not an aspiring racer and I've never actually found a board that comfortably aligned with my riding capabilities... prior to Sunday! For comparison, I made a couple of runs on my Donek FC167 (recent go-to board), tried the Kessler 170 (fun at Mach 5), the Rev 170 (loves GS turns) and at everyone's urging, the Proteus 170 (stiff, but damp). Then, Angie introduced me to the new Donek Voyager 170 (a collaborative design between Angie and Sean), and it was love at first turn! Slightly softer flex, super hold and amazing edge to edge quickness. For a single radius, non-metal board, I was surprised with its versatility and how damp it actually felt. Big fast sweepers even in chop, were surprisingly composed and it was very easy to tighten up a turn, to check my speed or avoid a meat gate. I never had to pressure the nose hard to rip some really nice tight turns and the tail stayed put, releasing whenever I wanted. It was very confidence-inspiring, to say the least. I rode it until my legs gave out and didn't want to give it back! Jim made a few runs on it and his comments aligned with mine, so I don't think I'm too far off in my assessment. I'll own one, hopefully sooner than later. James You should'a been there!
