2. hi DIVEBOMBER i remember people were asking about JASON BROZ on bomberonline about 10 years ago and back then the responses were all positive. since you are in the BIKE BUSINESS you may feel more assurance getting information from bomberonline member DAVID KIRK. i remember DAVID KIRK specifically asking about JASON BROZ on that thread about 10 years ago.
3. i GTANNER no offense taken. thanks for the helpful and informative observations. i found it very helpful and i am sure the others did too. RUWI just bought a brand new GO PRO camera and the novelty hasn’t worn off yet so you will have to forgive him if he just keeps haphazardly filming and uploading like a kid with a new toy lol. he keeps catching us in compromising situations like kicking puppies and carving like kooks. sort of reminds me of the time i passed out at a birthday party and one of my friends pulled out his penis and put it against my forehead and then had another friend take a photo. that brought the term KODAK MOMENT to a whole new level!
4. hi BOOSTERTWO thanks for your help (and the link.) i sent mr. LEMASTER an email and will let you guys know what he says as soon as i hear back from him.
5. hi BOOSTERTWO i was wondering if you needed to get mr. LEMASTER's permission to post stuff from his book. i just picked up a copy of ultimate skiing and wanted to post the photos of the modifications made to JULIA MANCUSO's and BODE MILLLER's boots in one the bomberonline boot modding threads.
6. yikes! didn't know you guys were going to post the vids, otherwise i would have hidden and not exposed my poor riding skills. since the vancouver crew is always bitching that the guys who post videos never indicate what boards they were riding maybe we should start the ball rolling. to the best of my recollection it was: PIERRE: virus scalpel 170 BLUEB: nidecker proto 167 RUWI: f2 silberfeil 172 TENORMAN: burton ultraprime 162 CARVINGSCOOBY: prior wcrm 173 that was scary carving in the slush. i stuffed the nose and conked my head just before lunchtime so i ended up taking a 2 hour lunch and only riding for 20 minutes afterwards before calling it a day. with all the exposed rocks did anyone notice any damage to their boards after they got home? i ended up with a deep gouge near the heelside edge and my epoxy repair on my delaminated tail partially chipped off so i need to add more epoxy before taking it out again.
7. hi BORA20 glad you enjoyed your first day of hardbooting. i agree with the 2 posters quoted above—most of the time a little toe lift will solve the burning front quad problem. you should only change one thing at a time otherwise the cause/effect relationship will be muddied. swapping your back cant to the front will mean you are changing 2 things and the missing lift from the rear may then offset the beneficial effect of the added toe lift. best thing to do is to leave the rear cant alone and just add toe lift. you can MACGYVER a toe lift by duct taping the bottom of your boot (not the binding.) just make sure the area under the toe of the boot you are duct taping spans the entire width of the toe block of the binding otherwise it may feel “tippy.” it is usually unnecessary but depending on how high you make the toe lift (i.e. how many layers of duct tape you use) you may need to adjust the binding. the beauty of using duct tape is you can build the exact amount of toe lift you need instead of being stuck with bomber’s default of either 3 or 6 degrees. that way you don’t end up buying the wrong size. in today’s disgustingly litigious society—DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. i’ve done this duct tape trick many times and the only problem i have ever had was all the work in removing all the duct tape afterwards lol. btw I can’t take credit for this great duct tape tip—i learned it from a post by KENT SMITH on bomberonline about 10 years ago when someone was lamenting the inability to adjust (nullify) the canting on td1 bindings to get pure toe lift.
8. hi NATEW i can't remember the name either but do remember they were made in ITALY. it was featured in a WARREN MILLER movie back in the late 80's/early 90's. i am sure i have a copy of the old vhs movie somewhere in my collection. during the summer i usually watch a couple of ski movies to satisfy my snow withdrawal and will look out for the name of the manufacturer and see if BLUEB can post a clip for me on bomberonline. in addition to the funky arm that fit like an open-ended (maybe 270 degrees?) hoop around the calf, the boot was even funkier looking. they looked like a cross between the 1970's mukluks and the modern ugg boots that teenage girls wear nowadays.
9. hi BORA20 if you are worried that your binding angles are too high there is a simple on snow exercise that you can do before actually taking a real run and possibly hurting yourself. i first discovered this great little exercise in a post by KENT SMITH on bomberonline about 10 years ago. essentially it was just the old beginner’s FALLING LEAF drill. i am assuming you have already mastered this drill on your softboots and understand the original objective of the drill which was to teach you pressuring and edging. the objective for a hardbooter (all ability levels from beginner to advanced) is to sort out your binding angles—specifically if they are too high. simply perform the falling leaf drill on your hardboots. if you find yourself working too hard (severe upper body contortions and swinging the hips way out to either side of the board) then your angles are probably too high. keep adjusting (probably lowering) the binding angles until you are pressuring predominantly with the feet instead of your hips and knees. this is a safe (and painless) way to figure out your binding angles (including splay, stance width and setback) before actually taking a real run. of course this will probably give you only your minimum angles as you will likely need to increase them once you get more experience and can tip the board higher on edge. if i recall correctly, KENT SMITH used the terms FOOT SPORT and HIP SPORT. he felt that snowboarding was a FOOT SPORT and that turns should initiate with the feet (toe/heel pressure) and then work it’s way up the body—not the opposite top down approach which would then be a HIP SPORT. i guess an example of a HIP SPORT would be SKWAL riding. you may wish to contact KENT SMITH directly for more information as i probably butchered his instructions as that was all I could remember from his well written explanations on bomberonline about 10 years ago. i am sure i must have forgotten at least half of what he wrote. as for sun peaks…… try to stay in the newer SUNDANCE skilift area. it is less steep and well groomed--perfect for beginner level hardbooting. they used to offer a restricted SUNDANCE only lift ticket for really cheap back when they first built the SUNDANCE area about 15 years ago. i was there this december and they appeared to have discontinued this discounted lift ticket but it doesn’t hurt to ask. i also remember there use to be a hardbooting girl at the sun peaks snowboard school. don’t know if she is still there or not. i think her name was MELISSA or something. she rode trident rat-trap bindings and was the covergirl on the sun peaks brochure/trail map for quite a few years about a decade ago.
10. i voted yes. i think a separate softboot forum would be great. if you don’t like softboots then stay out of the forum. hardboot equipment is getting more versatile while softboot freeriding equipment is getting stiffer and more supportive. personally, i think tightly done up 3 strap bindings (burton TORQUES for example) paired with stiffer freeride softboots is MORE supportive than a softer freecarve hardboot with a non-metal plate binding. shaped skis and modern alpine snowboards have taken turns biting off of each other for years now. on modern metal boards we are seeing less fore/aft weight shifts during turns. essentially we just roll the knees now similar to what the shaped skiers have been doing for years. good carving is good carving and eventually everyone (softbooter, shaped skier, telemarker (they have had plastic telemark boots for years now) and alpine hardbooter converges upon the same carving techniques. i haven’t been a bomberonline member for that long but i think the member who best embodies the carving spirit ironically wears softboots—i look forward to reading more interesting, entertaining and thought provoking posts from well respected bomberonline member SOFTBOOTSAILER. a separate softboot forum would probably increase the number of his posts and that in my opinion would be a GOOD thing.
11. hi CARVEDOG glad you eventually got your money back. it's good that mr. GILMOUR is issuing refunds without prompting from FIN DOYLE. i felt really bad for mr. DOYLE about 10 years ago when he had to order mr. GILMOUR to stop trying to setup an escrow account on bomberonline for accepting prepaid orders for new MADD snowboards when mr. GILMORE (and partner(s)) was/were resurrecting MADD snowboards (the FIRST time.) i could tell from the underlying tone of mr. DOYLE's old post that he hated being put in the position of playing the heavy.
12. was looking for something else in my barn when i stumbled upon this tool and remembered about this post. sorry for the delay:
13. hi CARVINGCHEF thanks for the info. i’ve never heard of us3 or flip fantasia (i'm afraid i am dating myself as an old fart) but i did pull out my old copies of both CANTALOUPE ISLAND and WATERMELON MAN and listened to them again. you are right it is CANTALOUPE ISLAND and not WATERMELON MAN. guess i got the names of both tunes mixed up since HERBIE HANCOCK almost always combines the 2 songs as a long drawn out medley during his live concerts. the fact that they are both similar compositions (jazz fusion blues in F) further added to my confusion. gotta make a mental note to keep both tunes separated in my mental filing cabinet. should be easy enough as there are basically only 3 chords in CANTALOUPE ISLAND--Fm7, Db7 and Dm7 lol. hi CASPERCARVER i just watched your video again (for about the 5th time) tonight. it seems to get better with each additional viewing lol. do you take requests? noticed you were leaving near perfect symmetrical tracks in the snow (i.e. heelside carves looked identical to toeside carves.) furthermore done on an assymetrical board no less! everytime i see thin symmetrical tracks in the snow i always think of the song WATERMELON MAN because of the near “mathematical” symmetry of its composition. sorry but i’ve always approached music mathematically rather than melodically lol. in future i hope you will post a video that focuses more on the perfectly symmetrical lines that you leave in the snow scored with the song WATERMELON MAN. i would really be stoked to see (and listen to) that! check out WATERMELON MAN below:
14. hi CASPERCARVER great video as always. the riding was nearly eclipsed by the music! i’m not a rap fan but a big jazz fan. can’t tell you who did the song but the piece sampled was WATERMELON MAN by jazz keyboardist HERBIE HANCOCK.
15. hi SKATE i didn't have time to check my email before heading up on the 20th so didn't find out about your injured back until after i got home from whistler. it was fun snowboarding around the emerald chair for a couple of hours before i figured out you wouldn't be able to make it. hope you have a speedy recovery. anyway i had a good day of snowboarding as i met 2 other hardbooters. a CZECH guy on a swoard and a GERMAN guy on an F2 speedster. however the day was marred by the teenage jibber who lost control sliding into the liftline and hit my board (PRIOR flc.) the top sheet is lifted and there's a further hairline crack about 3 or 4 mm in from the edge. the little turd didn't even apologize. i was going to rip his head off but then a temporary state of sanity prevailed at the last moment so i didn't do it. i later stopped by PRIOR SNOWBOARDS and asked GUS if i could just epoxy it and then clamp it down. he seem to think it was a fairly simple fix. i guess i'll have to ask BLUEB to help me with the repair. here's a pic of my damaged flc where i inserted a postcard in the lifted section of the topsheet:
16. got my lost phone back. thankfully all the pics are intact. here's the one of DAVID POISSON (france) taken on the ride up the BLACKCOMB GONDOLA on feb. 17th at about 8:30am.
17. hi SKATE as you can tell from the previous post i won’t have my cellphone until about midmorning tomorrow when i get it back from the lost and found in whistler. therefore, i will call you from my land line tonight in case you have any updates i should be aware of. on feb. 20th the women’s super-G will be happening so a later meeting time higher up on WHISTLER makes sense. how about the top of the EMERALD CHAIR (the first chair on the left as you exit the PEAK 2 PEAK gondola coming over from the blackcomb side?) i assume you will be uploading BLACKCOMB and then crossing over to WHISTLER on the PEAK 2 PEAK to avoid the olympic closures and delays trying to upload from the whistler side. 10 am sound good to you? if it’s too early then i’ll just keep riding up and down the EMERALD CHAIR until you come and get me. the runs serviced by the EMERALD CHAIR appear to be the best remaining alpine snowboarding terrain since all the really good runs are closed off for warmup runs by the olympic racers. if you have no objection i nominate the top of EMERALD CHAIR as the automatic reuniting point in case we get separated. i want to avoid cellphone calls as much as possible as i wear an over-the-ears helmet--in order to use my phone i have to completely remove my helmet. that’s after i remove my cumbersome fingerless gloves in order to remove my helmet in the first place! it’s a ten minute ORDEAL. the vancouver crew used to give me endless grief for leaving my cellphone in my car when i ride with them until they saw my helmet and glove doffing routine just to answer a simple phonecall on the chairlift. they’ve never bugged me ever since lol. the only change to look out for is i will be riding a prior flc instead of one of my burtons as someone wants to check out my uniquely cambered flc board. also i will have to leave a bit earlier as i want to get to PRIOR SNOWBOARDS before it closes. see you tomorrow at 10am at the top of EMERALD CHAIR. doug p.s. the easiest way to recognize me is to look for my uniquely DUCT TAPED gloves. p.p.s. i won't bother riding on the 24th as i just found out a few days ago that the olympic network bus leaves about 2 hours after the event finishes--while in the morning the drop off point is a long uphill hike to the spectator area! also you can't bring skiis or snowboards on the olympic network bus either--should have checked earlier. sorry.
18. hi CARVINGSCOOBY the bad news: i lost my cellphone when riding with ALLEE and IAN. unfortunately, i didn’t get a chance to take any pictures of them riding before i lost the phone. the good news: when i got home there was a message on my landline that my cellphone was found and turned into the lost and found in whistler. i called back and said i would pick it up on feb. 20th when i meet up with SKATE for a couple of runs. when i was uploading the gondola in the morning before ALLEE and IAN arrived some guy jumped in at the last minute. it was DAVID POISSON the olympian who finished in 7th place in the DH going up early in the morning to practice for his upcoming super-G race. very nice person and was happy to answer questions on ski racing on the long gondola ride up. he also agreed to let me take his pic on my cellphone and post it on bomberonline. i’ll post the pic when i get my cellphone back on Saturday as ALLEE wanted to see the pic too.
19. for any lurking hardbooters who want to join us, the meeting place per ALLEE's email is : "...at the trail map, next to the information kiosk/ticket booth next to the Blackcomb (EXCALIBUR) gondola........at 11am..." gonna hit the sack--gotta get up early tomorrow as the forecast calls for hero groomed.
20. okay. i'll bring one of my burtons also. maybe an ultraprime to piss off TRAILERTRASH lol. i just replied to your email so you should find most of your questions answered there. and yes, whistler does have half day tickets. i'm going to watch MICHAEL BUBLE singing up at grouse mountain at a 4 am taping for the TODAY SHOW so i will be hitting the sack soon. also there should be some olympic skiers being interviewed on the show--should be interesting. if you see a funny looking little guy jumping in front of the TODAY SHOW cameras and then being escorted off by security--that will be me. touch base with you again after i see what conditions are ACTUALLY like when i return from whistler on the 17th.
21. hi SKATE with all the olympic closures (most of the newer lifts and runs) there are probably less runs open now than 15 years ago so whistler will probably be exactly as you remembered it lol. try contacting ALLEE as she is contemplating riding on the 19th. unfortunately i have to be back in the city on the 18th and 19th but i will be back up there on Saturday the 20th. i noticed in your profile that you ride burton bales and i always make an extra effort to ride with a fellow burton alpine product user. btw i have a ticket to watch the women’s gs on the 24th so will only be riding early in the morning or late in the afternoon that day. so if you or any others on this thread want to make a few turns that day then let me know as i plan to be on my skis that day otherwise i will bring my snowboard. btw i just emailed you my email address and phone number. hope to see you on feb 20th. even better if you can rearrange your schedule to join us on the 17th (at least 4 riders confirmed per the above posts.) later doug p.s. it is legal to skateboard on vancouver streets!

23. HI GTANNER since the 17th is the best day for you, i’ll come up on the same day. it’s unlikely any others from the vancouver crew will be up as we already made plans to visit other out of town ski hills during the olympic weekends. HI ALLEE what bus line did you and BARTRON book with? hope you knew that greyhound gives a discount of about 30 percent if you book at least 4 days in advance. please post instructions on how to meet up. if you need to, you can email BLUEB and he’ll give you my number and email address as my bomberonline email is disabled. let’s hope for good carving conditions on the 17th.
24. HI C5 GOLFER finally the last photo is the EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT i was telling you about. it weighs less than 190 grams so when i open the window and a strong wind blows the paperweight is too light to keep the papers from blowing all over the place. ironically, i spent all that money and it can’t even function as a decent paperweight lol: the above IBIS titanium stem was one of the dumbest things i ever bought. i keep it around to remind MR. IMPULSE to think twice before making rash buying decisions. that was more effort than i anticipated to post all the photos i promised to. please wait until after snowboard season if you have further questions lol. I GOTTA TAKE A NAP!
25. HI C5 GOLFER the next 3 photos. a frontal view of the SALSA cyclocross handlebar we were discussing. it looks almost like a touring/randonee handlebar: mismatched shimano XT front derailleur: this last photo is of some aftermarket “top-pull” cyclocross levers that i have been meaning to mount on this bike. they mount inline to the existing brake cables. much neater than the old school way of running 4 separate brake cables. a lot of cyclocross riders didn’t bother with the extra weight. in the case with my FRANKENBIKE it would have meant that i would have had to remove the plastic alligator from my handlebar—if i did that i would no longer be COOL lol.
