  1. hi ARCLITE PSWISS came in second place to winner KEVIN REIMER in the vernon dh longboard race on sunday june 9, 2013. attaced is a photo of PSWISS and my dog LOYAL smiling at the prize money. p.s. PSWISS is not abusing the dog but merely supporting him by the water retrieval handle of the canine flotation vest--i was staying at a bed and breakfast by the lake and was walking LOYAL by the water before heading to the race and forgot to remove the life jacket.
  2. great photo. mr. SPECTOR rides like a man 60 years his junior. nice board too--1998 burton ultraprime?
  3. hi BOARDSKI don't know who was pushing/distributing them but they were invented by BOONE LENNON the US alpine ski team coach in the mid 80s. LENNON also invented the aero bars (i guess LEMOND owes his 1989 tour win indirectly to LENNON much to FIGNON's chagrin.)
  4. hi BLUEB sorry for the delayed response but i ended up riding the full day on both thursday and friday so was too tired to log onto this site until now. GRAVITYPHILE showed vast improvement between the tuesday session and the thursday session. he was still riding the green learning area by the catskinner chair so i moved him to the larger steeper emerald chair and finally to the even steeper solar coaster chair. he was able to negotiate the blue SPRINGBOARD run quite adequately except he had to slideslip the steep part near the beginning (the area that GTANNER said would be classified as a black run back east.) according to one of JACK MICHAUD's old posts about when he was a snowboard instructor, usually a person's technique breaks down if you put him on a steeper slope than he is comfortable with but this wasn't the case with GRAVITYPHILE--by midrun he was showing the same form on the blue SPRINGBOARD run as the green CATSKINNER run. the only thing that i wasn't sure of was he sometimes washed out while trying to finish a hard heelside turn--similar to his washout at about 15 seconds into the posted video of his tuesday session. unfortunately BRIAN couldn't make it on thursday so i couldn't film and try to critique his riding at the same time so no actual video (except the aforementioned) showing this. GRAVITYPHILE thought he was washing out because he wasn't pressuring his front cuff enough as per the BOL articles. that might be true but the problem was at the end of the turn and not the beginning since pressuring the front cuff is to initiate the heelside turn not to finish the turn--perhaps the reason is there isn't enough weight on the back foot at the end so he washes out? what is your opinion based on the limited video evidence and my untrained observations since i am not an instructor? he was riding a demo 164cm 4WD set up at 55 front and 52 rear with 3 degrees lift only front and back as recommended by CHRIS PRIOR himself. since it is not a metal board i told GRAVITYPHILE he still needs to come forward at the beginning of the turn and then move slightly back at the end of the turn instead of staying centered as per the most recent posts on BOL which pertain mostly to riding metal boards. the only other thing could be that he is not getting enough support from his boots and/or bindings? he was wearing track 225 boots with BTS (yellow springs.) his bindings were BOMBER SIDEWINDERS with yellow pads and yellow rings . the combination of the track 225 being the softest DEELUXE boots and the flexible SIDEWINDERS with the softest yellow pads might have been the main reason for his washouts due to his outperforming/overpowering his equipment. simply just too much FLEX in his carving system? ( he is about my size and about half my age and quite athletic.) his boot fit is probably okay since he ordered all the stuff (boots and bindings) brand new from BOMBERONLINE so the boots (and liners) would not have been previously molded or shellpunched to someone else's dimensions and the bindings would not have been indented by someone else's riding peculiarities. my suggestion to him was to either stiffen up his boots by getting stiffer BTS springs (red?) and extra powerstraps? or to stiffen his bindings by getting stiffer pads/rings or do both. i've never owned SIDEWINDERS (only the regular TD3) so i am afraid i might be giving GRAVITYPHILE bad advice about getting red pads and rings especially since i have subsequently checked the site and there is no red pad (the stiffest is blue? or is the red just out of stock?) also there is a disclaimer by BOL about using red e-rings without a plate or is that just for the BP version? probably the best thing to do is to get GRAVITYPHILE to contact BOMBER or vice versa on the best way to stiffen up his boots and bindings in the cheapest possible manner. luckily the costs of extra elastomer pads and rings and BTS springs aren't too prohibitive. if in your opinion he is indeed overpowering his equipment then maybe you could ask MICHELLE or FIN to contact GRAVITYPHILE to make sure he orders the correct (stiffer) pads and springs. his technique is good and he will eventually adjust to his TOO SOFT setup but i personally think he could benefit from a stiffer setup based on my observations of his riding style. this is not a case trying to adjust equipment instead of technique--you saw the video. almost forgot your original question--the WHISTLER ski school instructor that gave GRAVITYPHILE the private hardboot lesson was JOHN SHELLEY (spelling?) thanks doug p.s. as GRAVITYPHILE was leaving on FRIDAY we didn't meet up on that day until after the lifts were closed since BRIAN's kids tagged along and we had our hands full watching out for them (especially his 16 year old son who was in the process of transitioning from softboots to hardboots.
  5. hi GRAVITYPHILE it was nice meeting you yesterday. especially since i got confused that the noodle counter was in the RENDEZVOUS instead of the GLACIER LODGE--another senior moment lol. BRIAN and i were shocked at how well you were riding on only your second day of hardbooting. don't know whether it was your surfing background or the private hardboot lesson you took from the whistler ski school on monday that was the reason for your rapid progress. i am taking the liberty of posting the video that BRIAN filmed of you yesterday (tuesday, march 19) since you probably weren't going to post it for fear of a few BOL knuckleheads making snide NEWBIE comments. heres the video: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B88B0UCPwMfcbmFRNEpDb3FtSUU/edit?pli=1 looking forward to taking another couple of runs with you again tomorrow (thursday.) BRIAN tweaked his shoulder yesterday and apologizes for not being able to make it tomorrow as his kids are bugging him to take them to whistler so he will be taking them on friday instead of trying to ride thursday. i will be starting later tomorrow (10 or 11) to conserve my energy so i can try riding again on friday. either way one of us will be available if you need any help (riding tips or camera holding) on both thursday and friday--your last 2 days before heading home. i will text you when i am on the way up the gondola tomorrow. doug p.s. for any onlookers willing to offer helpful suggestions please note that GRAVITYPHILE was riding a lot better until he met me. in the video i told him to deliberately exaggerate the matching of his shoulder level with the horizon and reaching for the non-turning edge as he had a mild case of dropping the inside hand/patting the dog. prior to that he had a very quiet upper body with only a mild case of dropping the inside shoulder until i started to fix what wasn't broken.
  6. hi CHARLIE is this the same CHARLIE i met while carving at whistler (near the roundhouse restaurant) about 2 years ago? if i recall correctly you had a reddish one piece snow suit with white deeluxe boots and a manual td3 on the front foot and a stepin on the back foot? you were crying about your brand new metal coiler that had just been blessed with 2 huge gouges in the top sheet by a careless straightlining skier? i think you also had an oversized gray fur lined hat with large ear flaps? assuming you are the same guy--i'm doug the guy with the full face helmet and the heavily duct taped gloves. if you are still around tuesday march 19 it would be nice to take a few more runs with you. i'll be here riding during the week as per the schedule documented on this thread: http://www.bomberonline.com/VBulletin/showthread.php?39699-Looking-for-Lessons-in-Whistler hope to be able to make a few more turns with you. doug p.s. i won't have my duct tape gloves for the next few days as i just washed them and they will take at least another week to dry lol.
  7. hi GRAVITYPHILE were you able to hook up with DARREN CHALMERS? in case you didn't and still need some help i might be able to give you a few pointers. i'm not an instructor so all i can do is give you very BASIC pointers and perhaps take a video of you so you can post it on bomberonline and get some feedback from the membership. TRAILERTRASH contends that many BOL members are 20 plus year riders who stilll don't link turns properly--i am afraid i am one of them. i'll be riding either blackcomb or whistler tomorrow (tuesday march 19) and again on thursday march 21 and then again saturday march 23. my friend BRIAN will also be up there with me the same days. i am too old to ride every day anymore as i need at least a day off in between to recover and rest my bum left shoulder. since march 22nd is your last day i may leave earlier around 1pm on thursday march 21 so i can maximize my rest time in order to do a half day in the afternoon on friday march 22nd in case you still need me to hold a video camera for you. the BOL members are all video junkies as they invariably ask newbs to post video of their riding whenever one of them asks for riding advice yet few ever do. usually the brave newbs who do end up getting excellent advice and are glad they did. sorry i didn' t reply sooner but i was away since mar 1st and just got back on the 14th and just saw your post. hopefully you will see it in time. tomorrow i will be riding a black 1999 ELAN BALLISTIC 171 with f2 bindings and white UPZ boots and my friend BRIAN will be on a 2012 black KESSLER 185 with CATEK bindings and he also wears white UPZ boots. either leave your cell number or get BRIAN's (he does not have a BOL account) or my cell number from BLUEB or CARVINGSCOOBY as they practically know the cell numbers of all the vancouver area carvers. we will be eating lunch at the rendezvous on BLACKCOMB around 1130 am so you might be able to find us ordering our lunches from the asian noodle/stir fry place at around that time. hope to be able to at least take a few runs with you if you have already progressed beyond the beginner stage. doug
  8. hi skaters and windsurfers just dumping out all the old photos from my cellphone and forgot all about this one. about 2 weeks ago on thursday february 28, 2013 at about 1pm i leaned my snowboard against the wall while waiting for the peak to peak gondola up at whistler and noticed this strange looking contraption. wonder how effective the sail is and more importantly how much traction the rubber wheels have on hard packed snow. i assume you wouldn't take this thing out in powder lol.
  9. just checked and do have the little grey plastic disk. in case GTANNER's red one is different i'll leave the grey one with RUWI since you live close to his office in metrotown. later doug
  10. here's what the repair looks like if you invert the washer (eliminating the need for the angled lockwasher.) the first pic shows the ugly appearance of the non-flush bolt due to the inverted washer. the second pic shows how the inverted washer (closest to the dog) looks compared to the properly oriented washer (furthest from the dog.) it just kinda blends in and becomes a non-issue IMHO.
  11. hi SCRUTTON if you intend to use an ordinary bolt then you can just turn the inverted washer inside out and the replacement phillips (or whatever) bolt you substitute will sit flush with the top of the flat part of the underside of the washer. the salutary side effect is the inverted surface of the reversed washer will DIG a little bit into the plastic of your boot to give you a little extra grip. it looks ugly because it sticks out so much but it's probably more secure that the original unreversed upz washer and upz bolt. i am a couple of hours away from my boots so i can't post a photo yet but will do so tomorrow or after i return from snowboarding this weekend. contact BOL member BLUEB for more info as he ended up doing the entire repair for me as i was too busy playing with his dogs. p.s. i have since bought a replacement from DAN YOJA but am not going to bother replacing BLUEB's makeshift repair since it is more secure than the original bolt!
  12. hi CHARLIECHOCOLATE saw your post while searching if RUWI made a post about the 24hour event at grouse. i think i have your CANT DISC & BOLT in my spare parts bag but can't check for sure until i get back to my burnaby home tomorrow evening--haven't been there in almost 2 weeks so it may take me a while to remember where i put it. i remember giving some parts to RUWI, BEAGLE AND GTANNER last year so there is a small chance that one of those guys may have taken the last one. get my phone number from BLUEB or SCOOBY and call me saturday after 6pm. alternatively you could try searching the BOL archives for an old post by IAN HADGKISS about using 1 inch washers and tnuts (and lots of duct tape) as a temporary fix. the post was from the first year of BOL (1999?) and KENT SMITH either started the thread or was offering to send free raichle cants to people who needed them--that's all i can remember. good luck. call me either way. later doug
  13. hi CARVINGSCOOBY can you post the meeting place? i assume it is still the roundhouse on whistler side at 9am--right? thanks
  14. hi OLDSNOWBOARDS couldn't tell by your post if you also own the 196 in addition to your grey 186. always wanted to see what a 196 looked like. could you post a photo if you actually have the 196? i got the impression that the 196 was very rare and the people who had them loved them based on posts from bomberonline members who had 196s about 10 years ago--MACIEK and HELMET KARVLOW if i recall correctly.
  15. hi FROSTIE sorry for the late reply but it took awhile to dig through all my stuff to find the boots you were asking about. i have a broken pair (cracked toe ledge possibly from one of my metal bindings--it cracked while i was using ratraps but over the many years i have at different times used td1 and catek wc bindings also so i don't know which binding was the culprit or if they all contributed to the boot failure) and can mail you whatever parts you need off of it as the rear lean mechanisms are still intact on my trashed pair. no charge of course as i have lots of burton boots lol. however, i don't think it is necessary as your boots already look to be properly tricked out for a goofy footed rider. your burton reactors are the 1997/98 model. i have attached a photo of the spring of my stock unmodified 1997/98 burton reactor. you are not missing a spring in your right boot but rather you have an extra aftermarket one in your left boot--looks like someone tried a homemade version of either a BTS or upz style spring mechanism. for your right boot only: the stock springless top bolt is how you adjust the amount of forward lean. notice that as you lengthen the exposed portion of the upper bolt (increase the number of exposed threads) the cuff leans forward so that is how you adjust the INHERENT (for lack of a better term) forward lean. in addition to this INHERENT forward lean you will get an extra 10 or 25 degrees by using either the first or second detente position by locking the lever at the back. ignore the old burton literature about riding with an unlocked boot--you ALWAYS ride with the lever locked. that's why it's called RIDE mode--duh! you didn't leave it unlocked when you hurt your ankles did you? looks like your right lever is cracked so be careful that you don't snap it off completely--i usually wrap a thick elastic band around it and then pull my pant cuff over it to prevent it from accidently opening otherwise i will have to figure out how to remove one of mine and send it to you. i don't think i have a drift punch that tiny!!! the bottom spring is how you increase the resistance to forward lean. compress (shorten)the spring to increase the resistance and decompress (lengthen) the spring to decrease resistance to forward lean by adjusting the height of the bottom bolt. now that you know that with the unmodified right boot the forward lean and forward lean resistance is adjusted separately just read the rest of PHILW's post#5 which explains what the settings do in further detail. for your left boot only: it looks like the previous seller went through a lot of time (and maybe expense?) to try to ghetto rig some sort of BTS or upz style spring mechanism to increase the range of motion and/or flex and/or dampening for the left boot. since you are goofy you want your right boot more upright and stiffer than your rear boot so the previous seller was probably also a goofy footer like you. you should be able to adjust the rear boot to have more forward lean than the front boot and also to have more flex (and possibly a greater range of motion) than the front boot. looks like you got lucky in this respect. my offer to send you the stock spring still stands but i think it would be a step backwards if you yanked the homemade BTS/upz springs and put the original ones back in--but then you may not be a BTS type of guy. take BLUEB up on his offer to ride with us next time you are in the lower mainland. that way you can just take one of my broken 1997/98 reactors home with you so you will have you own little parts pile for future use. btw has POWDER KING changed much over the years? the last time i was there was when i had to be in mackenzie for work (about 25 years ago) and decided to stay over the weekend before flying out. i think the place was called AZU at the time. don't remember much except that i was constantly up to my neck in powder and there seem to be more trailers and portables than permanent buildings!
  16. on march 13th my 7th trip to grouse this year i had the pulled pork wrap, fries and a green tea. the sauce was excellent as i find most restaurants make it too sweet. it came with lots of freshly sliced cheese, grilled red and green peppers, lettuce, onions, and a bunch of other tasty spices. don't know exactly what was in it but it eats good. p.s. it came with a pickle but i ate it before i remembered to take a photo
  17. hi RJNAKATA i agree with both CHRIS HOUGHTON and BECKMANN INC. i personally don't detune but i know a lot of experienced carvers that do. i probably do it subconsciously when i sharpen my edges. on the toe edge i will sharpen about a centimeter higher towards the tip and stop filing about a centimeter further from the tail than the other edge. this means that on the heel edge i will stop filing about a centimeter further from the tip and stop filing about a centimeter closer to the tail than the other edge. i am one of the oddballs that feels that you use different parts of the edge when turning toeside or heelside since snowboarders don't stand symmetrically--unless you run parallel angles of exactly 90 degrees on both feet. in other words detune ASYMETRICALLY even if you have a SYMMETRICAL snowboard. so technically the only boards that i don't detune subconsciously are my old asyms. actually a centimeter isn't a whole lot so my best answer is i don't detune. at least not consciously-lol.
  18. just a quick note to let you guys know that GORD won as expected. will post pics when i get back next week. no time now--gotta pack for trip tomorrow night. later doug
  19. good for you GORD. i'll bring my camera on sunday and try to get a few photos of your 4x4 heats in between carving runs to post on bol. don't worry about meeting up with me for some turns after the race as i know you wll barely have enough time for both the race and all your relatives from back east. good luck in the race.
  20. hi CHARLIECHOCOLATE my motto is: if it's powder, stay home. lol sorry we missed you on the 18th--didn't get off the gondola until about 10am. i will be there either the 26th or 27th if you are still around. have fun tomorrow. with about 30cm since last night and possibly another 10 tonight there should be lots of fresh powder.
  21. hi SNOWBOARDWORM depending on whether or not GTANNER will be able to race in the boardercross on the 25th and 26th, i might be able to make it on the 27th. i am going to be out of town feb 28 to march 4th so the 27th is the only day of the 3 that i can possibly make it. BLUEB has a bad cold which might still be lingering on the 27th. if so then i will go get your chocolate from him and deliver it to you lol. you can get my cellphone number from BLUEB or i can get yours from him if i do come up on the 27th. btw do you have a child competing in the provincials? later doug
  22. hi GTANNER are your family obligations going to prevent you from entering the boardercross race on the 25th and 26th? if not then i will come up on the 26th (instead of the 25th as there is less snow forecasted on the 26th) to take some photos of you during breaks from snowboarding. i'll wait for the evening forecast to see if anything changes and revise accordingly. currently, neither day looks like a good carving day. actually the 27th is the best day in the 5 day forecast--cold and sunny with no new snow from the previous night. if you won't be entering the boardercross race please let me know ASAP either here or phone or text so i can make alternate plans to go on the 27th (with BORIS if he is over his cold by then) to make some turns with SNOWBOARDWORM. later doug
  23. hi PAN i saw that guy too. he had a red factory prime right? and what looked like a briko shaped helmet? he was also carrying a second board as he was riding towards the race course the first time i saw him. was it that salomon boardercross shaped board with plate bindings that was sticking in the snow by the starting gates? i couldn't see the topsheet but the base definitely said SALOMON and it had plate bindings. conditions were just too good that i didn't want to waste unrrecoverable riding time to go check out the boardercross race--most of the racers looked older. masters? i bumped into a german guy named ANDY riding a yellow f2 speedster. he commented that i was the first guy he saw in whistler riding an f2 (i was on the 2012 carbon silberpfeil--great board and will write a review later.) ANDY wore what looked like black raichle flexons with yellow tongues (fult tilts?) he was also wearing a yellow and blue jacket with a cross on the back. it looked to me like a ski patrol jacket. is ANDY a bol member or do any of the canadian ski patrol bolers know him? would like to have talked to him more but i was more preoccupied with trying to get at the relatively untouched corduroy as that was just before 9am--my first run of the day. ANDY also seem to be carrying a pretty serious looking camera and was preoccupied with taking pictures so we got separated soon after meeting. btw he said that i was the 5th hardbooter he saw that morning--maybe you saw the same guys as he did. GTANNER had to attend a family birthday party so we just exchanged greetings via text. GTANNER rode on the whistler side with his family. i stayed mostly on blackcomb as it seem to have better carving conditions today. did the solar chair and crystal chair all day. springboard, ross's gold, cruiser, ridgerunner and a few other lesser known groomers. the sun didn't show much so the snow stayed firm almost until closing time--what great carving conditions we had today!
  24. didn't dachstein make burton's alpine boots? i guess if you wore burtons back in the day then maybe these will fit your footshape.
