  1. Looking for my first alpine board. I started carving on an A-Frame 170 last year in hardboots. I'm looking for something I can use here in the West, that will hold a 200lb'er, good for all mtn, and not breach 200 shipped...but I can go beyone a tad. Does such an animal exist? J
  2. You suck... kind of but not really...JK J
  3. Not sure if you guys realized judging from responses...if you did I mean no harm but Gabriel is on softboots and soft bindings. Gabriel: 1/2" on either side isn't bad but I'd stay within 3/4" if you want to lay the board over and realy carve it. the key is not the binding overhang but your boot overhang with said bindings as well. My experience on toe-side 1-1.25" overhang is ok but not ideal...less is better. 3/4"-1" toe overhang is good. Heelside is easier to power over and get the board more verticle plus most riders can pressure the edge more on a heel-side so less overhang here will help. Best is to make both overhang the same so turns are initiated more or less with the same pressure. Anyway your 1/2" is a good startng point. What angles are the bindings set at now? J
  4. Agree 100% Phil. In fact I think I used your same argument (same height example too) last season to make the same point. A few on the forum were enlightened if not a tad skeptical. I think some people are so adamant about the over Hyping of Height that the forget to "not look at the tree" and run into the same tree time after time. J

    Opinions?

Good to know Jim. I'll definitely post up once it starts to get fluffy. SEJ: I look forward to trying the 172 if not maybe picking up the Tornado. J

    Opinions?

Sounds like a plan. I'm usually up there on weekends. Just secured a place to krash in South Lake whenever too so I'll be getting more days in this year. I like toys:biggthump J

    Opinions?

Blue: Not sure. I saw a good deal on a barely used board. I had been steering for 168-175ish. Jon: I'll keep my eyes peeled. No riding buds per se (mostly the "unclean"...skidders). I rode with Lonerider once or twice but due to pow conditions and slush the other I was the only one HB'ing. I ride Kirkwood and a few other Tahoe resorts. Mike: Appreciate the offer but I'm not ready to plunk down more than about 150 on a learning experience just yet. Once the chain requirements get posted I will likely be singnig a different tune. J
  8. SO I stepped into the light last year. Spent about 6 weekends on Sazukas and my A-Frame 170. I'm still getting the hang of railing that board and prior to that I'd been riding for 15 yrs the last few pretty aggresively. Question is at 6'3" 195 (215 in gear) would a 162 Hot Shine run screaming in fear from my manly mass? Or would it be a decent stepping stone toward and illustrious carving career? I think at 162, the Hot has a longer edge than the 170 so whadyall think? J
  9. If you still get no response try dropping Dan Yoja a line. He's North American distributor of them too at http://www.upzboots.com/ ( yoja@cablerocket.com) J btw, I ride FAST LTD's size large with 29mp boots and tip the scales at 210 in gear and Builder's Bars. I have about 6 full turns from fully extended where I keep them. With the FAST system they are kind of picky about being too tight...the pins don't want to play nice. Only got about 6 days on them so maybe 60-65 runs. The latter part of the season I started riping decently and had no fit or breakage issues. Coupled with the BTS the ride is jus about right.
  10. Were you not able to get the tail shape in SnoCad? I messed around with it a bit and could get some decent tail shapes. J
  11. I didn't bring that up as a legality but merely a state of mind. Cars on a multilane hwy for the most part go straight and everyone on the road expects that. On the hill, skiers and boarders and carvers are expected to turn and the mindset is essentially different than driving on a hwy. I'm in agreement on your outlook on collisions. We need less:sleep: and more:eek: when riding. J
  12. Can't agree more. Last weekend I was riding with the tunes on (just loud enough to still have conversation and hear (skidd skidd). Well did that for half the day then rode with my bud for the rest of the day without tunes since I was giving him pointers. Later on I was carving up some flats before a steep pitch and upon transition from heel side to toeside this guy suddenly appears 1ft away from me as I'm now on toeside. He glanced at me non chalantly but it startled me none the less. I had no tunes on and figured, I could hear him. Guess what I couldn't and we wer both clipping around 25-30 (I had GPS on at time). After that I woke up. When overtaking especially on flat traverses I use cycling ettiquitte (ON you left, On yOur right, or whatever) usually it startles people but most appreciate it rather than squeezing past quickly. shouting this about 10 yds away has done wonders...but little kids tend to gravitate towards me when I do that as they turn to the side i say as they turn their head. J
  13. I'm on both sides here. When I ride and turn I generally look uphill prior to carving to see what's up there. Every few turns I look up, especially if I'm going to attempt a deep carve. Mostly I am the one overtaking others as I'm carving on easy blues right now, but carve/slide on everything else. The 5 lane analogy is incorrect because it implies the as cars (they are obliged to maintain their lanes unless turning. And it is illegal to do otherwise as well as 3lane changes with signal or no signal) are expected to behave so are carvers. That's false as EVERYONE on the hill is expected to turn back and forth to maintain speed and control...it's ingrained in our equipment to do so. If it werent' we would have boards with straight edges like non-carving skis of yore. I agree that if we know a system fails to be upheld we can't knowingly and blindly be the only ones adhering to it and use it as our "protection" when things do go wrong. It's that same philosophy as to why in driving school they say to stay out of another car's blind spots. If they hit us it's still their fault but what good does that do since we "knowingly" put ourselves in harm's way. By our sport's constitution (carving/hardbooting) we are essentially in the "blind spot" of all other skiers and boarders whether we like it or not and can't rest on the "downhill's got right of way". It's been my observations that it takes two people unaware of what's going on to result in an incident...except for the ones where it's obvious the other person was creamed. It's this philosophy that has allowed tme the virtue of beign reasonably injury free both on the hill, on the water (Windsurfing/sailing/kiting has similar right of way issues which many don't understand or give a rat's ass about), and on the road. I can't count the number of times a numbskull has come close to hitting me but due to my awareness I've averted catastrophe...both on hill and on the road. J

    OT: Dog Nut

Here are my boys. Kuma (Mr handsome or The Kumacabra aka Cabrito) on the Left Titan on the Right (Mr Fluffkins) ...and Kuma with his goofy grin (that's Amy my Mom's Pointer mix in the back ground. They're not teched out and actually Kuma gets very embarrased when you try to put clothes (shirt, sweater booties etc) on him. He's keen on scarves though and loves to rock a red bandana...he's not in a gang though. J

    Tuning?

I haven't really noticed much difference with the dimple speed inhibition. I sometimes remove bindigns but mostly just loosen the screws and leave things still attached. I try to remove and replace as infrequently as possible to save wear and tear. J
  16. I'm apoligizing for this now but my next 10 posts will be in Ebonics. J
  17. I thought I saw that map right. But still. "What country begins with "U" ?" USA:sleep: J

  19. Some just say it's keepin it reel then again hearing it on the slopes makes it suburbonics. J
  20. Ahh yes, but I think you meant the adjectival spelling of "Wack" as opposed to the verbal of "Whack" J
  21. Gangsta is jibblish for "cool", "rad" (not to be confused with totally rad, that would be gangsta gangsta or hella-gangsta if in CA), "hot", "dope", "righteous", "bichin", "gnarly", "nifty", "schaweet", "awesome", "noice", "bonzer", "the cat's pajamas", "the gopher's trowel", "the congressman's paige"...etc:confused: J
  22. Sorry to hear that. sorry couldn't hold that in any longer J
