Denver area help???

Rusty

Recommended Posts

I was told on monday that my job is being relocated to Northglenn Colorado, just outside of Denver by the end of November.

Anybody out there give me an Idea what it's like to live there?

I'd probably want to live somewhere close Northglenn but not right in the city. Any towns/areas that I should avoid? (rather not find my self living in a disputed gang war or something.)

How far would I be driving to hit some of the better carving areas?

Thanks

Rusty in NH (well for now at least...)

Hi Rusty,

Yeah, I live close to North Glenn in FC CO.

It is a growing subburb of Denver...probably way different from what

your used to.

However, you are withing 1 -1.5 hours of some excellent carving hills.

I really like Copper Mtn, they have a good lift system & nice trails for

carving.

Do any kind of search on Summit County colorado & you will see.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Being a long time resident of the city, I think I can offer some thoughful advice. If your wanting to reside north of town look at Westminster, Broomfield Louisville or on the outside Longmont, all are thriving communities and safe, clean with good city amenities, close to Denver proper but far enough away to have a non rushed feeling.

If you wish to live in Denver proper the SE quad is undergoing a massive change and challenges it is called T Rex and is a highway project in and around Denver - let me say it one word TRAFFIC all the time even on weekends. Gnarly.

Moving on: The mountains rip, I have personally worked at A-Basin, Keystone, Copper, Loveland and Eldora either as an instructor or coach for many years, one warning is that the highway to the resorts is I-70 and it can be super gnarly on the weekends, more traffic than the road and accomodate, were talking 4 hour drives for 82 miles (trust me I've done it more times that I care to count) It is a divine place great people, smiling faces and trust worthy surroundings. The only other place I would move would be Reno/Tahoe, but that alas is not in the plans and I do indeed love it here and we welcome all comers.

Questions?

The traffic can be a bit challenging, but it is worth it!!

I live in northwest denver, in the highlands nieghborhood. 5 minutes from downtown, and a minute from both I-25 and I-70. Great mexican food, lots of brewpubs, multitudes of resturants, and all the sports fanatics you can handle. I live in an older nieghborhood with a really nice feel to it. Though I am really close to downtown, it does not feel like a big city. You may find the

newer towns a little barren. As a transplant from south jersey, I found the lack of trees a little disconcerting. Any who, carving an hour away, lots of mountain biking 1/2 hour away, and over 300 days of sunshine a year..

The pizza, however, sucks

In the highlands, great area, I had a sick view of downtown. Close to school (Regis) and great people.

I was priced out of the area, real estate has gotten out of hand over there.

If I was not locked into a new home down south (tech center) I would move back as I have upgraded jobs and bought a place. Anyway enought about me. Let's welcome a new carver to Denvah!

Thanks guys!

Hopefully they will send me out there to interview for the position and I'll be able to check out some of the area before too long.

Now looking at a map all of the towns seem to just meld into one big suburb is that about right?

What about Boulder? Too expensive for a single guy (and his dog)making around 40K? (plus side jobs if needed) Is RT 36 from Boulder to Northglenn a nightmare too?

I'd probably have to sell the little house that I have now in NH and I wouldn't mind buying a two or three family house. (a couple of tennants to help with the new mortgage.) Do they even exist in that area or is that more of an east coast thing? Mario, you know what I'm saying...any triple deckers?

The Pizza sucks huh...Damn, I'd miss my Papa Romano's.

Thanks

Rusty

On 40K, in Boulder you could afford a studio apartment with a little spendng $$ to spare. Yes that is an exageration, but not off by much! Housing is pretty expensive in the Denver metro area. Go to someplace like realtor.com to get a feel for what you can buy for your dollar. It might be worth looking at the Longmont/Firestone/Erie areas. In '01 we sold our 800sqft house for $140K, located in Denver proper, in a shady neighborhood. A two or three family house would probably run $400 to $500K in this market.

Do some research on areas you might want to live, check housing prices and try to get out here for a visit.

Check to see if your comapny will give you a raise/cost of living adjustment to come out here!

You might be able to find an "affordable" duplex in a slightly sketchy neighborhood close in, but at 40k it looks like condo bondage in our slightly overheated realestate market . Try to find a comprimise that doesn't put you too far north or east, it will just add that much more time to the mountains. On the pizza front, I did find aplace in Genesee right off of I-70 that makes one of the best NY stlye pies on the front range(Guido's) It is owned by a fellow rider/surfer who grew up in the next town over from me.

YEeeeeee haaaa!! That's awesome news Russ!!! We'll see much more of you out in Ute Country, I would imagine! Rnd trip ticks from Denver to SLC pop up for around 130 to 150 every here and there and if ya gotta, you can drive it in 6.5. Billy'll be in Co. plenty this year and Ima gonna try to be.

Weren't we just talking 'bout this? :eplus2:

Yikes !! That's insane ! Are there busses that take you from the city to the resorts ?

I'll be going down next weekend (Thu-Sun) to check out the area. I'll get to see the traffic in and around the city first hand...for better or for worse. :-)

Sounds like you guys need a monorail. :D If they ever stop voting on the monorail project in Seattle, you might be able to buy their's at a good price. Of course, they'll hold at least 5 votes to decide the price, so it could take a while.

If you time it right (leave early and stay a bit later to avoid the pm return crunch), you can make it in 90 minutes or so. I've known several folks with Colorado passes who ride in the evening at Keystone, which offers night skiing, until the traffic pulse is gone. Some stay overnight Sunday and head back to work early Monday morning.

Who knows? With gas prices the way they are we might see a heckuva lot more car pooling this winter--and reductions in 1-70 traffic. I think Fin has indicated that the ride board will be functioning this season, so you might be able to find a car(ve) pool!

Cheers,

After years of exhaustive testing and research, I have found 2 worthy pizza parlors in the state. One is the afore mentioned Guido's, and the other is Diorio's in Fruita. Guido's, located at 8,000+ feet rules out elevation. The fact that both of these places can do it right rules out ingredients. The owners of these two establismentshave one thing in common: they are both from central jersey, GSP exits 80 and 98 respectively, leading to the following conclusion: You have to be from the northeast to make( and truly appreciate) a good thin crust pie. About the only thing I miss from back east are big, gooey greasey slices from 3 Brothers on the boards in Seaside. :biggthump

Almost that time,

Hmm, Im currently living out in Grand Junction working at Leitner-Poma lift factory. Im gonna go check out the Diorio's in Fruita, which is stone's throw from here. I do recall eating NY pizza which is so great, and this happened more than ten years ago.

For what it is worth, there's several Diorio's -- two in grand junction and one in palisade. are they all the same as the one in Fruita or is Fruita's the authentic one?

it is located across the street from over the edge. Have not been there in a few years, so let me know how it is. My wife and I are heading that way in a few weeks and that is one of the places on the itinerary

thanks
