Keenan
Does anyone know if there are length limits on checked ski gear? The only info I can find on the United site refers to weight of bags, not length. Thanks, just trying to figure out which rides to bring. Mr.E
http://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/sports.aspx No length limit listed- I suspect you will be fine. A set of classic XC skis regularly run over 200cm, and they take those without batting and eye.
Tabatha
I flew United eight months ago with a very large snowboard bag and there was no issue (well ... just the checked luggage charge!).
Hilux
I remember reading on here a couple years back that 180cm was max for a snowboard for some airline...don't remember which one though. Although that really wouldn't make sense if you have a travel box/bag measuring more. I just tried searching and couldn't find it. Corey
Some airlines specifically say that only one board can be in a bag. I haven't been asked yet, but if I do then I only travel with skis. Two of them of different lengths. ;)
Neil Gendzwill
No trouble last year taking my bag that fits 200 cm boards. It had a180 and a 172 inside but they never checked. They didn't even weigh it. They also allowed my boot bag as part of the deal just like skis although their policy doesn't read that way to me. Mike T
Never had a problem packing 180+ boards in SportTube, counts as a regular bag. If you're going via PDX, those puddle-jumpers don't have a lot of room for luggage, you might want to ship it instead.
Keenan
Thanks for the help everyone! I figured I would get a better answer on BOL without waiting on hold for an airline rep. Just found out my 188 fits into a 180 bag, the stars are aligning.
Pat Donnelly
FedEx + SporTube is our choice. Shipped direct to your destination. It can be a pain lugging gear from the parking lot and through the airport, then trying to get everything into a rental vehicle. Edit: no last minute (excess) fees at the check in counter. You might want to check liability coverage from United for loss or damage. I have seen gear dragged on the tarmack and soft bags destroyed. The last time we flew with gear, our equipment did not make the flight. Northwest offered to deliver to our hotel sometime the next day, driving from Denver to Glenwood Springs. We ended up waiting six hours killing time in Denver for our gear to arrive on the next flight. This delayed our daylight drive from Denver well into the evening and we encountered full on winter driving conditions in the dark. Thankfully we arrived Glenwood around 1:30 a.m. But after that experience I vowed never to fly with gear again. Checking from a link posted early on in this thread . . . United is not liable for damage to water ski/snow ski/snowboard equipment. Excess Valuation may not be purchased for water ski/snow ski/snowboard equipment. John E
We flew to Hawaii last fall (not to board). If you "check in online" before you leave, they nail you with all kinds of fees. If you wait until you get to the ticket counter, they tend to look the other way on some of the oversize / overweight fees.
