i'm in md and it's not supposed to be an event until sunday night-monday. maybe a foot of wet snow in the higher elevations of wv (think 3k-5k ft) and s/w pa. lot's of wind.

east coast seems to have two camps; 1 those who fear-monger, horde and are alarmist. 2 those who don't care, are apathetic and tempt fate.

After what happened to us in CT last year I am not concerned. I am hoping that everything comes together for an epic-once-in-a-lifetime 4ft. DUMP that sets the tone for the entire winter. Fingers crossed. I'll keep this thread updated as I seem to be right on the way of this sucker.

http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20121027/US.Superstorm/Hurricane Sandy, upgraded again Saturday just hours after forecasters said it had weakened to a tropical storm, was barreling north from the Caribbean and was expected to make landfall early Tuesday near the Delaware coast, then hit two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid monster storm.

Even if Sandy loses strength and makes landfall as something less than a hurricane, the combined superstorm was expected to bring misery to a huge section of the East. An 800-mile wide swath of the country could see 50 mph winds regardless of Sandy's strength.

This is central Outer Banks at one of few N.C. islands that runs east/west - actually faces south.

Northern OBX - Dare, Currituck counties including Nags Head, Duck, Corolla - will take a harder/wetter hit but nothing compared to Northeast if this thing, indeed, becomes a 'Perfect Storm.'

AC is being hit hard. 80 ft of the Atlantic City boardwalk ripped away and floating about the streets. The ocean already met the bay down-beach in Longport. We shall see if my moms house makes it through this one!

A photo of the CVS & WAWA in Margate about a mile down-beach from her house before actual Sandy landfall.

Battery Park Storm Surge 13 feet - higher than expected...

Some tunnels and subways flooding 10:52 NYT

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/10/28/nyregion/hurricane-sandy.html?hp

Here in Possum Pouch (Central NC) - hundreds of miles from eye of post-tropical Cyclone Sandy - variable rain and winds 15-25 all night with gusts to 45 mph.

On coast, Highway 12 - the single access to OBX wave magnet - long since flooded out. Worst damage Ocracoke Island and, now, 'up north' from sound-side flooding as westerly winds blow huge amounts of water out to sea.

South of Cape Hatteras, the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic', 180' HMS Bounty replica sank - 14 rescued by two Coast Guard helicopters - one dead, one missing (?) Having spent more than one terrifying night on a wood-hulled ship in the middle of a chaotic Pacific maelstrom, I feel awe and sorrow for the brave crew of the tall ship, and incredible gratitude/admiration for the Coast Guard crewmen who saved them.

Sandy Says 'Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow'

10.30.12 02:28 PM

<Photo from today at Snowshoe from Krysty Ronchetti

I hope your Halloween costumes consist of snowsuits! Sandy's snow is here to stay. Flurries started to fall late Sunday night in the mountains of North Carolina, and the rest is history. With the snow pouring down, numbers will continue to rise, but here's the latest from the area resorts: Cataloochee with four inches, Beech with eight, Sugar with seven, Wolf Ridge with eight, and the winner, Snowshoe Mountain, with a whopping 24! And yes, just yesterday it was reported that Snowshoe had a mere dusting.

We'll continue to check in regularly to get updated information so be sure to follow us on twitter @SkiSoutheast for the latest and the greatest.

With the heaping amounts of natural snowfall, many resorts have the potential to open early. Here's a look at what's happened over the past two seasons:

Cataloochee started its 2010-2011 ski season on November 6, and its 2011-2012 season on November 12. Snowshoe opened on November 8 for the 2010-2011 season, and on November 9 for the 2011-2012 season. Beech kicked off the 2010-2011 season on December 4, and December 3 the following year. Sugar first began its 2010-2011 season on November 6, but had to reopen on November 27. A similar pattern occurred last year, when Sugar first opened on November 11, but had to reopen on the 18, and then again on the 29. Wolf Ridge opened the slopes for their 2010-2011 season on December 3, and on December 29 for 2011-2012.

It's safe to say that many resorts will break their own records this year, or at least the late streak. If that's the case, we could be looking at well over 100 days to get out and ski/board. Heck, maybe even closer to 130; wouldn't that be nice?

Feel free to email me your comments, photos, videos, etc. to tonette@skisoutheast.com.

Just got my internet back here in CT. A little gusty at times but the worst of it has past and the storm really broke up once it hit shore. Most of the major damage seems to be more south. Hope everyone weathered the storm OK. In hindsight I guess you can say there was a lot of hype, but it could have been bad. Better to be safe and prepared than sorry.

No power at my place since last night-still none-I have a 26 ft boat tent shelter that will need some clever bending and heat to bring back to servicable condition and usable..nothing compared to the issues in NJ and NY...feel sorry for those folks and hope they can get their lives back to normal soon.

Remnants of Casino Pier and the Jetstar rollercoaster in Seaside Heights NJ

Since I moved west over 20 years ago, I have only been back to my hometown of Bayville NJ but a handful of times, and I had not anticipated heading back any time soon. I have always felt that it was a good place to be from. I used to feel that Snooki was the worst thing that ever happened to my old stomping grounds, the boardwalk in Seaside. Then came Sandy. The meager wages of my teenage years spent on pinball, games of chance, record stands, the jetstar, and boardwalk food. The incredible people watching, Pineys, tourists(bennies in local parlance), Bikers, drunks, bums, guidos, surfers, wanna be surfers, hippies.....an amazing kalidescope of humanity drifting by. I once saw a Dominatrix sitting in a booth of a clam bar. Stockpiling 25 cent beers during punk shows at the Chatterbox Bar and getting stupidly drunk there on my 19th birthday. I returned to the boards as a tourist 15 years ago with my wife and rode the ferris wheel on funtown pier, and now, most of that weirdly magical place is gone.... :(

sad

hmm, shiploads of overseas 'help' arriving in the northeastern states. my history may be patchy, but i think that didn't go down too well the last time...

Iran (seriously!!!) I'm sure there was no expectation the offer would be accepted ...

"Send us your poor... your teeming... all your fissile material... " signed Uncle Sam

Know who actually sent help after San Francisco's 1906 earthquake and fire? Russia! Seriously...

Back to the real mess they have to deal with. A few years back, Portland saw it's worst flooding in decades (not even close to what Sandy brought of course) It flooded our ports and we worked for weeks trying to clean the utility tunnels and especially the electrical switch gear. Transformers , conduits, junction boxes, electrical panels all had to be cleaned BEFORE we could re-energize. It was huge , nasty and at times very dangerous job. I wish my brothers stamina and safety in their duties. It is mammoth undertaking and I am surprised to see so much infra structure come back on line so fast. Of course for those folks in effected areas it must seem like forever. Take heed folks, we must be able to care for ourselves in time of devastation.

Examples: Working in closed tunnels underground that had sludge of unknown materials (industrial area near super fund sites) Keep in mind , normally these tunnels have ventilation and lights , they are below grade and no natural light or ventilation. Pretty foul to work in cleaning and drying switch gear. Many men and women are in danger doing this work in the subway tunnels and utility tunnels, great pressure is upon them. Let's hope they all go home safe to their families too.

Hey,

It was AMK (Anna) that was impacted by Sandy. I had the pleasure of meeting Anna at the 2011 SES. Beautiful gal with a great spirit and personality! I getting worried when she stopped posting to FB for several days. She recently posted an update that her home is no more:(. She indicated she managed to get out safely with her bike, snowboards and good shoes. She has been cleaning and trying to salvage what she can :(. She lives in Brooklyn. Given what she has been through her posts indicate a strong spirit! :) There are a lot of impacted areas not making the news. It is all so sad:(
