Feelings on Music Whilst Riding??

Riding time is quiet time. Carving is almost a form of meditation for me. It's my stress relief. That's why I never ride on weekends, too many people, too much noise. I'm working then anyway.

I feel the exact same way. Sometimes I'll go out with friends, especially on a pow day, but on a normal non-snow day it's all about me and the hill.

it seems to me that using tunes will disable work of inner ear, which is used for sensing body balance and speed.

If this were true, dancing would be impossible. Your ears can do both at the same time. Speed and balance are observed from your semicircular canals, whereas sound is observed by your cochlea. The semicircular canals and the cochlea work in similar ways, but they are separate systems used to record different sensations ... I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that we evolved separate systems for observing different sensations for good reason. Probably so that we can walk and talk at the same time. I would imagine that sound and balance are probably managed in different parts of the brain as well.

That said - I think a really good reason to not listen to tunes while riding is to hear the quality of snow underfoot, though you can usually see and feel it just as easily (and certainly see it before you hear it/feel it, when it is too late to compensate for unexpected surface conditions).

My local bump is small enough, they pipe in music over the whole resort. I don't ussually care for the song selection, and I've learned to tune it out. Every once in while I'll hear a song that gets me charged, they have a different selection in the park, but I'm not out there to listen to music. I tried a few time to ride with portable tunes, but found it more distracting than enjoyable. I'll just take the sound of the wind whipping past my ears and the sound of putting my board on edge.

Actually at high volumes and/or frequencies sound can disorient. Cranial nerve VIII, the Vestibulocochlear nerve is broken down into 2 branches. One, the Vestibular branch which controls your equilibrium, and two, the Cochlear which is responsible for your sense of hearing. These branches join together and conect to the Central Nervous System just between the Medulla and the Pons. Pilots who have obtained inner ear problems are grounded for this reason. You can listen to music while riding at a respectable level, and you must be keeping it at a respectable level, but anyone blasting loud enough that others on the slope know what song you were playing as you went by are playing it too loud.

Ditto same setup but sans nano. I think I too spend the fall making my new "soundtrack" Lots of Grant Green, Gotan Project, Fez Dispenser, Nitin Sawhney, Thievery Corp. and of course "the man in black" to enhance the tree riding. If I'm jonesing for the old timey stuff I'll toss in some Jimbo Trout too.

I keep the vol just so I can hear the music and I can still hear the straight liners coming from behind. Oh and the look uphill every third turn doesn't hurt either.

Thanks for the tips on music. Very fun. Typed in Pandora.com and your list--all kinds of good stuff I've never heard of.

I ride with earbuds cranked to ear-bleed levels at all times.

Only if there is friend with me on the chair will I turn it off to chat.

On the rare occasion that someone appears to have a clue and wants to talk gear, I'll oblige and give them a BOL card.

I'm with Thor. Not all the time, but when conditions allow I do like to crank it up real loud.

Of course I live where you can find a deserted run almost all the time.

yup, tunes are essential. Been riding with a walkman since I was a kid. Carrying a small brick in your jacket, then a giant hockey puck(discman with anti skip) and now either a 30 gig ipod video, a mini or a nano, I even have a 256 meg lil dealio that only holds like 15 songs. I bring a 2 into 1 splitter and extra headphones to share the musical stoke on the chair.

You get used to constantly looking up the hill, making sure nobody is on yer arse.I just hang back and wait for a clear hill and bomb it until it gets crowded.Playing air guitar on the heelside carve looks silly from the chair, but who cares ? I just push it way harder when I'm rawkin' out.

one of fav tunes to carve to.....cuz everything's much cooler in slow motion:eek:

It always seemed like a bad idea, but a couple years ago I got this free Zune...

I really like it. I keep the volume low enough to have a conversation in the lift line / on the lift without turning it down, and it makes the lift ride less boring and more enjoyable. I can barely hear it when I'm riding but it's there when I stop or slow down. When the newer/smaller/solid-state Zunes came out I bought one for this reason alone.

Cool, my gf uses Pandora. I haven't checked it out yet. We use E-music.

If you liked my list check out Greyboy(DJ Greyboy) or the Greyboy Allstars, RJD2 (aka DJ Shadow), and The Bongolian.

I can't ride with music, albeit I have tried several times. It messes with my focus. When carving, it hinders my ability to hear/feel my edges and adjust my balance and weight. When in powder/steeps/trees, it messes with my ability to hear/feel the whooshing/floatihg sounds of turns (thus affecting my balance, etc.) and the sounds of my buddies yelling "holy sh!t this is amazing" and so on. And I also just like hearing the outside.

And yes, TVR, you do listen to your music loud. I'm honored you took the earbuds off for me... (And it's funny we had this exact same conversation on Upper Tiehack.)

In line on Saturday morning, 3 teens in line in front of me. Guy in the middle is regular footed, guy on right is goofy. Goofy says to regular (real loud) "you gotta listen to this" and pulls out one of his earbuds and gives it to regular to listen to. He then starts to bob and weave around to the music and it looked for the world like goofy was dry humping regular's leg. I blurt out dude, do you have any idea how ghey that looks? Goofy freezes and turns to me with the biggest **** eating grin on a red face. He realized what he was doing (and what it looked like) and got a laugh. Regular was oblivious to what whas going on as he was still listening to the music. It was good humor and funny as hell.

Be careful out there with that music.

Always loved riding with music, started 26 yrs. ago with a under-dash cassette player in a custom made pack powered by 6 C cell batteries and I was lucky to get 2 hrs of playtime. If I hit the bumps hard enough (on my Black Magics) the tape would eject. Paid 250.00 for my first cassette Walkman, a lot lighter and rode with CD players for quite a few years. Upgrading from an Iaudio 1gb player now to 16gb so I can go loseless- http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/iaudio/7/ opening up the sound with a little amp- http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/the-mobile-line/headroom-total-airhead.php and may top it off with new headphones if I can sneak it past the wife- http://www.headphone.com/products/headphones/full-size/sennheiser-hd-555.php . So excited I just had to tell someone! Powder Mountain is quite enough that I don't worry about riding with tunes and I hope the mountain stays that way, Praying for snow- Kipp

IDM == 'Intelligent Dance Music'?

Not sure, I usually listen to music with words and guitars and drums and basses ... but I seem to like Amon Tobin for snowboarding (and fantasizing about it on the subway). I really like Rhino Jockey.

yeah figured if you liked amon tobin you might be into some other similar artists. i dont find many people that like that kind of music.
