Custom Boards

Recommended Posts

Last week I got an email from the school saying I have a large package waiting for me. When I got it home, I was like a kid at christmas and unwrapped my present with tape and paper flying everywhere.

I had waited 6 months for this. I wanted a metal board, but if I was going to spend the money to get one, I might as well spend a little extra to make it unique.

With the talent of Steve Fleck, the topsheet design went from this sketch made by a pharmacist I work with:

mailgooglecom.jpg

to this, done by steve:

Gleb_Board_RoughSketch.jpg

to finally this:

Glebs-Board-Final.jpg

The rest was up to Lindsey at www.snowboardmaterials.com and Bruce.

Taking off the protective covering, I became 10 times more stoked at what I saw. It came it out insanely good!

I was too lazy to put the images together into 1, but here's a full board shot:

I just wanna say thanks to Steve for putting so much time and effort into this, Bruce for making kick ass boards and Lindsey for her nice job on the printing, because now I have a killer ride that looks sweet!

Two days on the snow so far, and there is already damage near the edge of the topsheet at the tail. It doesn't really bother me since its a snowboard thats meant to be ridden, and not a museum piece thats only meant to be looked at, and imagined of how it would ride. Its an all mountain 181 with 13.2 scr and it feels so solid. I can't wait to use it on some nice hard pack next year.

Who else has some cool original boards? I know there are plenty out there.

WOW!

... not much more to say. Great concept and phenomenal execution. Does Steve have a web site showing other projects he's done? What did the custom work (design+production) run you?

Alice is pretty damn hot.

Dan, thanks, I totally agree. Steve lined the smoke and leaves for the bindings up perfectly!

To get the topsheet printed and shipped to Bruce costs about $65.

You can contact Steve about pricing. I'm not sure if he has a website. He gave me a deal because I really couldn't pay much at the time. I'll be going to him for all my future boards and I'll want to pay much more than what I paid the first time. I had a thread looking for a graphic designer here a while ago.

I'm already trying to think of different designs for my SL deck that I want built, but that won't be for a while. I still gotta pay this bad boy off.

For Bruce to put the custom topsheet on, he actually takes off $20 or $30 because you're not using one of his designs. The board, shipped to me cost $775ish, but I know prices are going up next year. I don't know when the cutoff for the new price is. Put your orders in soon!

A full custom, super high quality board for less than the price of a nice STOCK pair of skis that probably won't compare in performance. I love alpine boarding :)

That's a sweet board Gleb! Does it ride as well as all the other metal Coilers people are raving about?

Who else has some cool original boards? I know there are plenty out there.

I got a Donek this year with a custom top sheet. Posted some pics in another thread but will add them here too. The top is Mt. Rose, my home mountain and the bottom has Kokopelli ripping it in the cord.

Nice work Gleb. I guess you will have to get off the lift one footing it so as not to step on the super hot Alice.

Randy - nice shots again of the sick cord with line thru.

And who is this crybaby and why no info. and why does it have so many porno burton boards?

First the new forums and now someone who is off the radar. And it is still snowing. :biggthump

Just general weirdness in the air.

Whoa! Sweet lookin' board.

First skier to sink a pole in Alice or ride up her tail better get a faceful of attitude. Maybe you should put some spikes (the little round Dakine stick on stomp pad ones) on the tail to keep skiers from scratching your namesake hatter in the lift lines.

Nice! Take a pic with the bindings on so we can see how it all lines up. Looks like it probably works, but it could be tight. It bums me out when cool graphics get covered by bindings.

Had an equally pleasing experience with snowboardmaterials.com and Coiler earlier this year.... you can see my baby here:

Looking at it and trying to figure out how the graphics would work from my carvedogcentric world view. Then it dawned on me. You must be goofy.

What binders you have on there?

Cuz I have to say Jack's cateks look pretty sweet on that Safari wannabe.

Someday, my board too, will come in.

Jerry, go see an eye doctor. Jack on CATEK's? :smashfrea

Oops. No flames intended. I really do need to get an appointment. Can't read my freaking cell phone caller ID anymore.

I didn't read though. I just saw the triangular plate.

As if anyone here doesn't know that I really don't not know what I am not talking about. I'm out.

These are the first pictures I've seen of the final product and I'm pscyhed it came out so well! I'm definitely jealous... One of these days I'll come up with something good for one of my own boards.

If anybody else is looking for some custom topsheet work I'd definitely be interested in talking about it with you. I work full time as a graphic designer, but this is actually the second custom topsheet I've done on the side for people I know. It's always cool to see the final product for the first time!

My website is very out of date, but if you get in touch with me I can always send you a pdf with some examples of my work. I think my rates would have to be on a project specific basis. Gleb's board was ridiculously complicated as I made all the characters in illustrator and then laid it all out. (Yes, believe it or not the whole design is vector based!) But I imagine not every design would take this amount of time.

Gleb, glad you like it, and I can't wait to see it in action out on the hill next winter!

Thanks again guys, but all the credit goes to steve!

He put so much effort and detail into it. The mad hatter's teapot resembles the Russian flag, it says "Gleb" in his hat. As gdboytyler noticed, the cat is lifting Alice's skirt. Also, the smoke that looks like carves in the snow. Its hard to see, but mountains in the back at the top. I love the caterpillar with the crossed legs looking so relaxed. Everything is just so good!

I ride regular, and the binding comes up to right above Alice's head with about a quarter inch to spare. When I'm snapped in, her head is slightly covered, but if you're standing behind me, you can clearly see it. The Queen's head is not covered at all. Steve did a great job lining it all up. I am really impressed.

I'm saving for some TD2s because thats what seems to work well with the metal boards. My burton race plates don't look that nice on it right now, since they're not shiny. I can't use my cateks since I don't have the suspension ring. The yellow elastomer of the TD2s will look pretty good against the dark background of the board.

Softbootsailor, Grace's art is pretty trippy, in almost a child's drawing kind of away. Except they actually look good.

Randy, I saw that thread when you first posted, and that board is beautiful. The cord looks so perfect!

Jack, that board is sick too. Looks so much like the original, but modern at the same time. So slick.

Isn't it nice to own something thats one of a kind? :)

Carvedog, getting off with one foot is really the only way I've known. I just can't really do it any other way. Guess it works out. And yeah, who is that guy? I do like the topsheets of the boards he posted. Maybe its a she. Who knows.

johnasmo, first skier to put a pole through this will get a face full of razor sharp PTC tuned edge. I will take none of that. :nono: And this past weekend I was thinking about those spikes. I was told that I'd have to take them off everytime I get a base grind but I don't plan on getting that many grinds. And those spikes can't be that expensive anyway. I just can't wait to see the look of the first skier to hit those with their ptex. I don't know what his or her reaction would be, but I'll have a big :D on my face..

P06781, he dispenses only the best :biggthump just kidding!

steve will treat you guys right!
