skategoat
Heh, the one that kills me is when people learn that they should say "Jim and I went to the store" instead of "Me and Jim went to the store," and then they think it always, always, always needs to be "Jim and I".So I'll say something like: "Oh yeah, that happened to Jim and me." Then they say: "Jim and I" Then I say: "Actually, no, it's 'Jim and me'". Then we have a big argument. That's an easy one to win. You tell him to take Jim out of the sentence and then how would you say it.
skategoat
When I was in Baltimore, women were always calling their purses a "pocketbook". It's not a book and it doesn't fit in your pocket so how did "pocketbook" come about?
Dan
How did I miss this thread until now? One of my biggest pet peeves: "complement" vs. "compliment". It's criminal how many people (including copywriters) don't know that they're two different words.

It's not a book and it doesn't fit in your pocket so how did "pocketbook" come about? http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/purse How did American women come to call the large bag they carry around a purse? They often carry their real purse inside the so-called purse. In the UK, that would be called a handbag. The redundant BE They will be going - They will go I'll be doing that soon - I'll do that soon I found it very confusing when I first moved to the US that most people use the word bring when they mean take. Bring and take imply a relative location and are not interchangable BobD

carvedog
My nephew drives me crazy with: I don't know where my snowboard is at. ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH. Those dangling prepositions just make my blood boil. Actually heard the cliche "for all intents and purposes" on the radio yesterday. Had to laugh thinking of this thread. Did spend some time out your way in 1988-1991 though - lived in Hosd River. Went out with a local girl from Klickitat. Her Dad used to want to "talk timber" with me, since he worked at a mill...that is a WHOLE 'nother dialect as well!!
