  1. Yes, big surf right now. I saw a picture of Seal beach in today's paper and the waves featured were some of the biggest I can remember. Was out two days ago not as big, but very fun. Last, I heard from Mike was from Neah Bay on the northern tip of the Olympic peninsula. The crazy dude was waiting for some 20 foot Aleutian swell to come in before making his tip south of the border. I've never surfed with Mike, but with his agressive and go for it attitude, I'm sure he does well. On the other hand, I have seen him on the snow, and he rides like no one I have seen, and is full of great tips and insight. Ohh to be an x-olympian in the sport we all enjoy.
  2. I too have to give a big thumbs up to the guys at Snowperformance---lots of geat advice at any level Mike Jacoby is not just an ordinary pilot, but has logged in many hours in the Alaskan bush country. I think his passion has now turned to the liquid medium of carving. Check out this picture he sent to me . The crazy thing about this picture is that it was taken not far from where Mike lives, which is about 100 miles from the ocean. The pic is one of Mike's buddies, taken by Mike. Sorry Mike, I know its kind of a secret spot. I don't think many surfers frequent this forum.
  3. Welcome to BOL! What's Old School Mammoth Varsity? Hey Brian, what's the condition of gunsmoke? Jumps in yet or was it carvable?
  4. Simple is better. I like the salad bowl format, where you can pick out what you want to eat and digest before going the next item without navigating all over the place. :D
  5. I've met him once. I think it was the last time I rode with you and the boys from Santa Barbara several years back. It still really doesn't make sence that the gooming is so sticky at Mammoth when they have such a strong race program. Even when they do fasination and the surrounding race runs there are ridges. Maybe it's because they have such a large area to groom, they drive the machines too fast??? I'll see you later in the season at Mammoth / June or possibly in Utah at the WTC---if I make it.
  6. Yea a lot of schools are out, but I have always had good luck with the crowds at Mammoth before Christmas. Between the holidays June is the ticket. I really wanted to make it over to June on Tuesday, but couldn't get any accurate reports on the coverage. I was hoping to ride gunsmoke before they ruin it with two super jumps again this year. AND the grooming is much better at june---go figure.
  7. Monday drove up at 0330 and arrived in Mammoth around 0830 had breakfast and took a nap. First turns at around 1100. Temps were in low 30’s to high 20’s with wind gusts 30mph plus. The coverage on the groom was good in most areas and it seems like the hill has more snow than reporting. Off piste obstacles abound. The snow was good / very good for carving---solid and hooking up. By 1500 all major carve runs were cut up and the light was dangerously flat, so I call it a day. Tuesday no clouds---blue bird skies over Mammoth and no wind. Temps were in the low to mid 40’s. First turns around 0930 with again good / very good snow conditions for carving. Mammoth grooming is still a nuisance with ridges left the night before by the cats. Rode hard until about 1400, ate lunch, took and nap and drove home. If you get a chance to make it up in the near future, it will be well worth the time.
  8. Birthday? Now that would have been a better excuse not to go. Hmmmm, on the other hand it is the best excuse to go! ;) Missed makin some turns with ya. Fill you in on the details later. Happy B-day!
  9. Will be at Mammoth or June Monday and Tuesday. Anyone making early week runs those days?
  10. It kind of looks like this, just a bit smaller. I can have pictures of actual base and top sheet next week.
  11. Two 168's, there ya go! if you want something a little longer, I have a 178 I would be willing to part with. Let me know.
  12. Yes! but how satisfying it is to lay treches deep enough to trip up these complainers skidding across the fall line. :o
  13. Neil, stop what you are doing and go ride :smashfreaAaron sent you an email .Were you able to ride locally? Need some info on the Utah trip. Once again I am spending way too much time on this thing. Gotta get out more.
  14. Kirk my kids spring break is later in april and it seems that most breaks range from mid march to late april. It doesn't matter anyway, just go to June when Mammoth is crowded. You can ride it on the same ticket if the ticket was purchased at mammoth. I'm trying to put my plans together for the WTC. Have the venues been decided yet? Maybe Park City and Snow Basin? Just got an email from oldvolvosrule and he is ready to go with tickets in hand. Anyway tell me what you know about the event. Thanks. GC
  15. Chair 25, super choppy crud conditions were variable at best and difficult to ride with any speed or angle, but still fun. I hope you didn't sell the coiler based on that day---it looked like a great board. Anyway Neil's last post is what we all need to hear.
  16. Don't sound so bumbed. It's not all that bad---snow is not too far and a great group of carvers to share it with. Are you in Orange county or LA county?
  17. Neil, work is intense right now and will remain so untill after Christmas, but I do have two days, most likely Tues/Wed of next week or the following depending on the snow conditions. Dave your back in the south land? Should be a fun cast of characters this year looking forward to ridding with you boys.
  18. Peter I've got some old burton stuff you may want to try. I also have a Vokl 178 RT and burton reactor boots size 29. All you need are the bindings! Often lots of carvers at Mammoth/June and most are friendly, helpful and oppinionated all in good fun! Keep in touch through the profile section. Neil are you up right now? Any significant snowfall yet?
  19. How was the traffic going up? Is the town crowded? Yes we were truley spoiled the last several seasons with early starts and long seasons to follow. Mammoth always seems to pull through. Hope your able to make some turns Ray. Neil are you settled in yet? Where you living up there? I was talking with Aaron about the WTC. Are any of you guys going to make it this year? It sounds like Aaron is pretty serous about making the trip and so am I.
  20. Neil is in Mammoth and I am getting the local surf forcast on BOL. I spend way too much time on this thing Thanks for the optimism Erwin, but I'm sceptical. I'll be in touch tonight for tomarrow's surf secession. See ya!
  21. Looking forward to the production models. Great application for wider boards like the 4wd---more leverage to help rail a 200mm+ wide board on edge. The squishyness, if any, might also be nice in softer, all mountain, conditions.
  22. I have three days off in a row with no surf and no snow National weather service is still calling for more high pressure and mid 60's well into next week up there. I'm half tempted to take my bike up just to get out of town, and bring back some gear for the classifieds, but will probably hang tight untill more snow. Lower Rock Creek would be nice to ride next week, temps will be perfect! Farmer's Almanac in saying that Novemer will slightly dryer than last year with several storms stacking in toward the end of month first of Dec. We'll see?

    4wd vs. pilot

I can't speak about the pilot, but I can say that if I had to be stuck with one board it would be my 174 4x4. Wide enough to float in the pow, but can still lean over a mean turn. I usually ride mine in softer conditions and it worked wonderfully in waist deep last year :D
  24. Very bumbed to have missed it last year. Will try to make it this year for sure!
  25. Aaron, I just talked with Erwin yesterday (Tuesday) and he said that riders were having to walk around the mud to get to the lift. National weather service is calling for weather in the mid 60's for the rest of the week I have had no such luck getting a good I idea on the riding conditions from the cams, will have to make some phone calls to know more. If it doesn't work out this weekend, I'll take a raincheck on the ride share. I plan to go up a lot this season and will need to minimize the gas bill. Also would like to make some turns locally.
