    Old pics.

    Old carving/racing shots. 2001-2012
  2. Billy is a good friend of mine, he's not riding quite so much these days, he's killing it kitesurfing...of course. Phil Fell is the person you're thinking of, he's moved away from the area and is now big into dirt biking.
  3. Hi Rob and Softbootsailer,From the point of view of a skateboard racer/coach and snowboard racer/instructor, I feel as though the hips are the key to both sports. As your core, the hips for me, are the key factor in rotation. It's like being a doctor, looking at a symptom and determining the true cause of what is happening. We SEE the arms because they are so visible, and the hips less so. It is REALLY hard to get the hips moving, and it's not a natural movement, so the arms can be used to 'encourage' the hips to do their job. The two slalom racers, my friends Marcus from Sweden and Janus from Latvia, ostensibly have very different styles, but to me, when I look past the 'symptom' = arms, and look at the 'cause' = the hips, I see pretty much the same movement. When I look at one of my snowboard heroes, Sigi Grabner, I see the same thing. The arms are a long way from the feet, and to use them as the turn initiator, would be less effective. One of the most effective drills for race coaches, is the ride with a slalom gate held parallel as you make turns, ultimately just resting it on your forearms as you turn. This trains you to keep the hands level as you ride. By a way to illustrate my point is a video I made 6yrs ago...(please don't subject yourself to the whole tedious thing, just the first minute or so will do), but it shows the two sports in one tape, and may, or may not, give light to my version of what we see. Thanks. Martin
  4. As a skateboard slalom racer, I would invite you to ignore their arms for a moment, and look at their hips... Despite their differing arm movements, are their hips doing the same?
  5. If you look at Janis on the right, this is where as slalom skaters, when doing right slalom as opposed to GS, we actually use our arms to 'generate' speed, not as a primary balance function.
  6. Thanks, you too!And I too use my hands to mimic the movements of my my feet for students. It really helps them understand pedaling.
  7. Personally, I find my hands invaluable in both my board sports... For me, the concept of hip rotation is a hard one to get across and by using my arms in a particular position, 'encourages' my hips to do what they should. I'm more of a racer than a free carver or Euro carver, so my style is a little different to most, but on snow, having my hands pretty parallel to the snow, really helps me keep my upper body in the right position, and the correct amount of angulation that I need for maximum edge hold and angle of the board in the snow. but that's just me... Toeside: Heelside: ps.Sorry the pics are so big!
  8. PRICE REDUCTION - $300 plus shipping.
  9. I just wondered if anyone was offering actual race training in the Beehive state? I don't think Chris Karol is doing the FAST thing anymore, and as far as I know, there is SBX training going on, but no alpine. If not, is there anything closer than Steamboat? Thanks.
  10. Nicely displayed, like the works of art that they are!
  11. Last week... I miss it already. After 30 seasons of teaching, the last 3 part time. The last 2 poor winters, 100% in soft boots teaching, I had lost my mojo. After rediscovering hard booting, and racing in particular, I am now as keen as I've ever been. Annoyingly this happened in April, so my thirst goes unquenched. Guess I'll just have to get my slalom sk8 out for the Summer. I can't wait to ride next season, on boards new to me, new plates, and new enthusiasm... BRING. IT. ON!
  12. She joins a long list of snowboard luminaries, lost to avalanches. Just shows again, that there is no such thing as an avalanche expert...time and time again, the avalanche wins. So young...sad for her and her family. I stopped backcountry guiding when I became a father, we all make our choices, and live with the consequences. Ride safe.
  13. T The reserve is more than that...
  14. Vist plate for sale! $350 plus shipping. Start building up your gear for next winter, with the plate with the most podiums! I'm currently out of the country, so don't have photos of it in its own, only one with it on a board, but have just decided that it is surplus to my needs. It is in excellent condition, having gone on my SG when it was new...and therefore not used more than 10 or so days. All hardware comes with it. Paypal preferred. If it's still here in a week, I'll post it on the bay of E... Thanks for looking!
  15. I stuck it on there because I wasn't getting any response on here, and although I realize it might be better to wait till Fall, I need to sell sooner rather than later. My next purchase is waiting. Thanks, but I don't want to sell it for $300, it's only just about broken in, and is perfect almost as new.
  16. Just an FYI...a pair are about to be posted on the 'Bay of E', in the next couple of days. Virtually brand new and they are quite impressive in use...I used them twice last year, but I need the cash for my racing fund. The display in your peripheral view is unobtrusive and good fun. You can download all the data to your desktop/laptop, with a map showing exactly where you've been, speeds etc You can opt for text message display input instead, a map of your friend's locations, music selection, distance traveled etc Full details are on the Ebay posting, out in a couple of days. Have a look...

  18. I understand that, but having tried a medium and seeing where my boot needs to be, ( more towards the heel than the toe to be actually centered), this can't happen when the toe and heel pieces both have to be moved to their smallest adjustment, to hold the boot securely. See BlueB's post above...he's absolutely right. Anyway, since this discussion started, a second person has contacted me with several mediums, so I'm good now...thanks all!
  19. Great piece of video! Well done young man. (great soundtrack too!)
  20. Thanks, but they only have Small and Large, hence my question.
  21. Although I know Bomber make an excellent product, I am racing and don't require the precision of the Trenchdiggers, which are outstanding on smooth surfaces. I need some leeway and I will be riding ruts...
