  1. Secret to a long life: Always breathe in after breathing out. A deep breath in and holding it is commonly used for power activities involving powerful contraction of the abdominal muscles. The breath in tightens and flattens the dome shaped diaphragm muscle between your chest and belly. Not really a recipe for relaxed carving. When you are relaxed your body does its' stuff automatically. You don't need to remind your heart to beat, nor, unless your ex-girlfriend is a vengeful water sprite called Ondine, do you need to remind yourself to breathe.
  2. http://alpinesnowboarder.com/the-norm-part-i/ This article looks like a good next step. And maybe SnowyTom's video with over 400,000 views.
  3. And the brotherhood and sisterhood you've found extends worldwide.
  4. This is surely the winter for retorts mentioning a certain female Czech snowboard racer.
  5. Translation = Sold (so there's no confusion about the two wags posting above )
  6. Nothing to stop you mixing a set of red and yellow BTS springs, or indeed putting a hard stop in the direction you want limited movement. Hard skateboard truck cushions might do the job without being absolutely rigid. Experimenting with stuff can be very informative for the observant.
  7. If it was radioactive then probably a nuclear medicine scan or PET scan. The indicator used depends on which bits you want to highlight.
  8. Gadolinium? Unless your MRI @daveo was organised by the GRU. The discomfort of the the IV access being put in depends very much on the skills of the person doing the task.
  9. @ursle FIS Snowboard have a Smugmug photo site. Images back to 2009. First event of the 2009 year, an indoor PSL in Holland, B Karl on podium with one other both riding his metal sliding axle plate design. Next event, a PGS in Italy, JJA on podium and on ?Hangl, but certainly not an Apex or any kind of sliding plate. https://fis.smugmug.com/FISSnowboard/World-Cup/2009
  10. @Señor Chuggs Don't come away from the video thinking that an average binding angle of 60 degrees is the only cant neutral angle. 60 degrees is only cant neutral when your stance distance:zero cant distance ratio equals 2:1. The secant curve shows that other ratios and binding angle combo's can also be cant neutral. With flat bindings, a cant neutral stance means your knees will not be asked to bend unnaturally just by your stance. A flat stance means your legs will need to bend a bit more to deal with the lack of lift, but at least that will be in the normal directions of movement for your joints.
  11. This key point about axle placement in relation to the rider's front foot binding position is not universally known. It should be. Thanks.
  12. Maybe @pow4ever you need the chance to ride with some friends.
  13. Your binding lift and cant depend on a number of inter related variables. You may find this video helpful in terms of getting your head around it all.
  14. Because Benjamin Karl had already led the field with his sliding axle design. He was well ahead of the Apex composites design, which was kept under actual wraps until after the Vancouver Olympics, by which time the horse had well and truly bolted.
  15. One area that does need design change when a plate is to be used is the core strength around the threaded inserts. As plate insert patterns become longer, then the inserts are placed in progressively thinner core. Each insert creates a weak spot in the core. My own experience of this is that in 2012 BV built me an NSR 180cm with standard binding inserts, standard UPM inserts, and then an extra pair of inserts 4cm beyond the UPM set at each end. I subsequently built a long interaxle design plate utilising these outer inserts and rode it. The board failed just at the front edge of the front outermost heelside insert. In the post mortem discussion with Bruce talked about the effects of inserts on core strength and what he'd learned since the board was originally built. Only a builder, like Bruce or Sean Martin, will be able to tell you exactly how successful they are at reinforcing the core at AllFlex pattern inserts, maintaining the core flex profile, and producing a durable board.
  16. UPZ RC series boots have a relatively steep zeppa angle, i.e. the slope of the part of the boot the sole of your foot/custom orthotic ideally rests on. I recently measured the difference in boot sole thickness between the heel and toe of my mondo 29 UPZ RC10s, 2016 model. The effective slope over the sole length of the boot allowing for the Intec heels I use was almost exactly 6 degrees.
  17. So, how long till someone builds a plate system with a pair of miniature adjustable damping/return hydraulic shock absorbers replacing the slide part of current hinge + hinge/slide mechanism? Weight seems less of an issue for the GS racers.
  18. @AcousticBoarder I can vouch for the long term benefits of deliberate practice on gentle slopes.
  19. Lots of ways to effectively set and ride the edge to carve a turn. You appreciated both the result and the aesthetic of another style.
  20. @philw Neologisms have a proud history in English writing. T'was brillig and the slithy toves..... She's trying to describe something not seen before. Bending the shape and meaning of words we already use is not inappropriate.
  21. Boot mods Hand armour, a DIY project that has had several iterations. Pretty happy with the latest version.
  22. 'The goal is to automate us': welcome to the age of surveillance capitalism https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/jan/20/shoshana-zuboff-age-of-surveillance-capitalism-google-facebook? Even as you read this you and your data are being harvested, processed, and sold. A new and thought provoking book from a professor at the Harvard Business School.
  23. The other factor is how much in built position sense & balance you were given by the mixing of your parents gene pool. I watched my 2 nieces on their scooters at a skatepark over Christmas. The 6 yr old hesitant and tense. The 4 yr old has it all, confident, relaxed, yet dynamic balancing skills. Now I know who to pass my boards on to when I eventually get too old/die. Actually, you'll have to prise my Coiler from my cold, dead hands.
  24. @rjnakata If you read the whole thread what you wanted to know is probably there, just with a whole lot of other stuff around it. In the end to "know it" for yourself you may have to do what a number of people were trying to persuade Beckmann to do. Try one for yourself. See whether the experience is to your taste, for they are devices that polarise opinion.
  25. Got to see you twerking and carving at the same time! Good to hear you're feeling like you're actually getting somewhere in your riding.
