  3. I found this, nice concise description: Racing vs. Carving There are a few differences between carving and racing: http://www.alpinecarving.com/racing.html Carvers finish their turns but racers don't. Carvers make complete half-circles, which would be too wide for a race course. Racers make turns that are more elongated in the direction of the fall line, and change edges before the board becomes perpendicular to the fall line. This difference is the primary reason why carving technique is different from racing technique. If you tried to carve on a PGS course, you would probably encroach on your neighbor. Racers minimize their body movement to follow the fastest line down a course, but carvers apply exaggerated movements. Carvers often rotate their torso into the slope ahead of the long axis of the board on each turn to carve half-circles, whereas racers typically keep their torso facing a direction between the angle of their bindings and the long axis of the board to avoid over-rotation. Carvers never skid, but the winning racer will always skid. Racers often skid or glide flat on the board, especially at the beginning of each turn. Racers try to be as fast as possible, whereas many carving styles often result in the slowest possible speed down the fall line. Carvers can tip the board high on edge and carve tight radius turns, which generates a centripetal force that counteracts gravity and bleeds off speed. As you get better at carving, your technique will result in slower speeds, which will require you to move to steeper and steeper terrain to maintain sufficient speed to get the board to carve. Carvers are often anti-competitive. The idea is to express yourself rather than compete. On the other hand, there is a ski carving competition sanctioned by the FIS. Skiers turn around buoys and are rated on carving skill.

  19. agree, Jay Peak at par would be 1st choice. Nobody mentioned Sugarbush. Close to exit 10 off 89, great trees and groomers. There's a bunch of good bars for happy hour, too. Close enough to Mad River, you get a nice chill hippy flavor. You said you like Amsterdam , right ?

  23. great to have ya back, DSub, ya big goof. it was posted recently....you carve you carve you carve....I'll find it tomorrow, here's the new version of it from Scream of Consciousness. One of my favorite moves on the hill is to frontside/heelside toward the edge of the trail and blast the lip like slashing the top of a wave. where the grooming stops is usually a nice lil transition to hit.even better if there's a chairlift overhead, people love that sh!t. Now... we lean we lean we lean <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0IWh3Gp4rw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0IWh3Gp4rw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> found it <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp4uZckpcF4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp4uZckpcF4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
  24. I had the same 160 with the surfboard stringer look, it delamm'd after much abuse with plates and got a warranty for the greenish blueish turquoise 159 with the wave between the bindings. that also eventually broke and got the T Sims 169 which I still have and would love to get replaced with a similiar powder board since it's also delamm'd. Can't believe I used to ride such a shorty lil 159/160 as a everyday driver.
  25. :rolleyes:Jim Callen, got a Cougar Cub Cam ? snap some stealthy paparazzi style pix ? skate, your tourguide bears a slight resemblance to this guy, the wry smile and all:rolleyes: edit=] speaking of beautiful babys, and guinness
