bigwavedave
Spirit is reporting 6" of new snow and there should be a few more inches over the next couple of days. Thinkin' about coming up for Thurs & Fri.
lonbordin
Hey Spirit gang! Is there a go to place to take a board for a grind in the region? Paoli has a machine but no one there has any experience so they're not touching my new Coiler! Thanks!
bigwavedave
Ken has experience with Ski Hut, the local Duluth shop.I think he has taken his alpine boards there. So, your NEW Coiler needs a base grind already? How come we haven't seen any pictures of said board yet? I usually set my own edge bevels when I get a new board and save a base grind for when I need one, but then, I don't race.
khoward
I would avoid Ski Hut. They detuned the front of my Donek Metal FC back about 6-9 inches despite written instructions about what I wanted done. Damage Snowboard shop in West Duluth is a good source of gear, but they wouldn't touch Alpine boards. Not aware of anyone else in town. Typically, I've had Gravity at Copper Mountain due my edges when were at USASA, but perhaps not this year.

I used to work at the Ski Hut in Duluth and they are great guys, but they don't understand carving boards. I wouldn't be excited about handing any of my boards to anyone who doesn't have practice with carving setups. I'd ship it somewhere if I needed a grind. bigwavedave
Hoigaards in St Louis Park (SW Mpls) might be your only "local" choice. I suspect they still see a fair amount of carving boards from the G-team's alpine riders. I brought my first Kessler there for a base repair and grind several years ago and they did a good job. http://hoigaards.com/articles/ski-snowboard-tunes-pg66.htm It's not far from where I live, so I might be able to help out getting the board up to Spirit for you if you decided to swing by and drop it off at Hoigaards on your way to Duluth. If it's not too bad, you can probably ride it as is, just fill the gouge with wax.

rwmaron
Got out for a couple of hours this morning...yesterday's snow kept things a little slow even more so later in the morning as the sun got brighter. Best conditions were on Gandy and Bear Claw - Blue Ruin looked good from the chair but was rough and bumpy; Cinder Snapper was closed as were Juggler Joe and Timber Cruiser (being prepped for the Frosted Fatty this weekend). Oh yeah, Monoski Madness through Friday too. Russ

rwmaron
Joined BWD just after noon today in what turned out to be a lull in the traffic from the school group, the monoskiers, and the home-school classes. We got a few good runs in on the Express side before Dave called it a day with new boot liner issues. I went over to the Gandy side for an hour or so to escape the traffic; when I came back things had thinned out enough that unfettered fun could be had again. On one of my last runs down Double Jaw I followed a monoskier who carved some beautiful lines ahead of me; I made a point of giving him props at the maze. lonbordin
Wow... The weather forecast for Duluth has been all over the place as of late. Still we're looking forward to stepping back into winter. Leaves have sprouted from the trees and flowers are in full bloom here...
bigwavedave
yeah, crazy weather, at least there is some winter temps returning. Most places closed down for a few days during all the warm temps last week. Things are likely icy/crusty. Maybe we'll get some local reports from some brave souls that venture out. Seems most areas have given up on making any new snow, even with the return of cold temps. Lake effect snows are likely in the U.P. over the next few days and Indianhead is starting to blow some man made snow. http://www.bigsnow.com/live-cams Might be worth making a day trip over there. Pick a sunny day, midweek. Edited March 9, 2017 by bigwavedave
rwmaron
Bright sun, very firm but carveable groom, and temps in the single digits that kept the throngs at bay made for a most enjoyable day of riding - one of those days when you just rocket around every turn! Hooked up with Dave (Lonbordin) for a couple of runs. Snow predicted Sunday night and Monday should make for a good week here in the northland. Kept seeing top of the line softboot carving throughout the day - found out later that there was a PSIA snowboard instructor clinic on the hill today. Bottom line: lots of sweet lines! Pond skimming was scheduled for later in the afternoon...I doubt that drew much of a crowd with the cold... Russ

bigwavedave
Thinking of coming up after the new snow, maybe T-W & Th. Anybody wanna do a day trip to Indianhead Thursday? Conditions are looking nice, light lake effect snow all week (plus the storm tomorrow), and skies should clear by Thursday.

Yes, one of the benefits of patrol membership is that we sweep all the runs before the lifts open to the public and my group usually consents to my request to take Fourpipe.....cold again this morning but no wind and only slightly muted sunlight.....that plus the time change meant even fewer winter sports enthusiasts out today (see photo). BWD - I can't swing a U.P. trip but will be out Wednesday morning (and all day Friday). Russ 8 hours ago, lonbordin said:

lonbordin
Shorter morning due to equipment failures. Probably should've inspected my backup boots more closely. Ah well... Cobbled a fix together via the rental folk and a tool from patrol (thanks for putting that bit of info in my head @rwmaron Wasn't so confident with my repair but went out because @bigwavedave was in town and the snow was slower but still super nice, for me. Heading to the hardware store shortly. PS- Russ and Dave reach out to me this afternoon if possible.
