tex1230
I'm not sure where I first heard that term...but I like it. Last year, I spent several days at Sunlight Mountain, near Glenwood Springs. This year we are thinking about Eldora. Being stuck in Texas for the foreseeable future, I'm looking for a few more mountains within driving distance to check out. Any opinions on Eldora? Any other places we should check out? What are your favorite small/isolated hills? Edited July 14, 2013 by tex1230
Keenan
Yeah, I worked at Eldora for a winter, it sucks. Don't waste the gas. Loveland is easier to get to and a much better small ski area. Depending on what part of Texas your driving from you might want to check out Wolf Creek, another small area that doesn't suck.
pokkis
For carving i would go to Santa Fe , also Angel Fire and Ski Apache are worth of visit. Wolf Creek was more of piste place for me than carving on slopes.
D.T.
Look into riding at Monarch and staying in Salida. It's closer to you than Loveland and Eldora. Less busy than Loveland and less touristy than Wolf Creek. You could also split the trip and spend a couple days at Loveland and a couple at Monarch - a Loveland season pass (typically ~$350) gets you three free days at Monarch. It all depends on how many days you want to spend riding...
fin
My favorite "gem" is Grand Targee. Had some of the best carve days there many years ago. No crowds, tons of groom, WAY out in no-where land. Only issue was fog.
tex1230
I remember Ski Apache- I learned to ski there in 1978 (it was Sierra Blanca then). And Wolf Creek was the first place I snowboarded in1981. I've looked at Loveland before on my drives up to summit county and aspen... Taos/angel fire sound doable... My favorite small hills in other parts of the country were Homewood and Mohawk (CT)

I nearly made it to the top in a campervan!! . Head on collision on my way back down. I parked it at the bottom and had a great day on the hill . Win some , loose some :)
