patmoore
Hmm, if a boarder beats your actual time on skis it only means he or she is faster than you, not that boards are as fast. Actually you're one of the guys who has beaten my ski times! When we did the training day last winter, you'll recall the skiers had one course and boarders the other. Although you can't compare different courses, the better boarders sure compared favorably with the faster skiers. I brought in Chris Bing as a guest pacesetter (one very fast young skier) that day and some impressive times were laid down. Scott Maynard's time almost matched Chris' and Scott didn't have the advantage of skating and poling. I suspect my ski times will always be faster than my board times but I really need improvement in my technique on both. Hope to see you again this winter! ursle
Would that be the same Scott Maynard who was by far the fastest rider in the Nastar finals with a 9.51 screamin..(subtract 10 from that) Who (I hope) is a member of team Okemo, which along with Doug (guido591) makes team Okemo Awesome:cool: I'd like to hit some Fridays there for Nastar this year;)
jtslalom
Good Job Jack Michaud, I've watched this clip many times over and over. I'm happy that some one had the sense to post it here. There can be alot learned about carving a board from watching ski racers, especially slow motion FIS racers.
TheTruth
I wouldn't know, but... maybe in Nastar, but I'd be extremely surprised if this were true at the wc level. A skier has too many mechanical advantages. Right on Jack. NASTAR can be lots of fun, but it isn't real racing. A lot of people can be "fast" in NASTAR, but when the course become very long, and very steep it is another story. All of a sudden, racers that are just a few tenths of a second apart in NASTAR, are separated by full seconds. I've personally seen racers that race head to head in NASTAR, get separated by upwards of 10 seconds (!!!) in a USSA GS course.
tenorman
If you enjoy Ron LeMaster's photosequences of high performance skiing, you might also enjoy his new book.Ultimate Skiing presents lots of useful, well-organized and easy to understand info on physics, mechanics, and high performance technique. IMO it's a very useful resource for aspiring snowboarders as well as skiers. Hope it's snowing where you are. B-2 hi BOOSTERTWO i was wondering if you needed to get mr. LEMASTER's permission to post stuff from his book. i just picked up a copy of ultimate skiing and wanted to post the photos of the modifications made to JULIA MANCUSO's and BODE MILLLER's boots in one the bomberonline boot modding threads. Alaskan Rover
Wow!! Seeing this pix of this guy getting down to SERIOUS business has just stoked my desire to get back on racing skis again!!! Like TOMORROW!!! Hopefully that feeling will pass...ha ha. But it brings back memories!! Those extreme angles are ALSO how I tweaked my knee...but I wouldn't have traded it. My old Volkls, Atomics and Elans wouldn't compare to today's NEW racing sticks, though!!! This guy's ACE !!! He'll have to make a hella transition to his next gate, though...but those 5 rings on his chest signify that he ain't no weekend warrior!...ha ha. Photo originally posted by Stevo. tenorman
using the book's photos on bomberonline would be a violation of copyright because bomberonline is a commercial site. however, MR. LEMASTER was kind enough to send me watermarked versions of the photos for use on this thread: http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28038
2Curious
This is low as I can get on skis. I broke my ankle on the same gate the next day (NASTAR Nationals at Steamboat last year). I have a lot of room for improvement. Time for another look at this video. Just an observation but it looks as though the outside ski is just along for the ride and the inside ski is doing all the work. Impressive, nonetheless. This video would look infinitely more impressive if he didn't flap that outside hand of his in such a silly way... looks like a complex partial seizure!

BDZal
The olympic skier is Thomas Vonn running the super g in Salt Lake, so 2002 technology if it matters. I think that speed skis may be stiffer in the middle for a reason. It's not always the plate. The older ones I believe had a more even flex. My '07 Atomic super gs have practically no camber, a low rise tip and are stiffer in the middle. They have the black plastic plate which has a lot of flex to it and is very damp. It's very similar in material and design to the risers on the Vist plate (the only snowboard plate I've seen). I don't know what the sidecut geometry is.
