<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width=720 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=header vAlign=top align=left width=560>Reported on 03-10-2009 at 08:22 by David </TD><TD class=normal vAlign=top align=right width=160>sod.png weather32.png printpage.png rss32.png </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=4 width=720 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=normal vAlign=top align=left width=460>UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE We will not be opening chair 1, chair 7 or chair 8 today. The temps are 24 below zero with a constant 20 to 30mph wind. That puts wind chill factors at 50-60 below zero. These conditions are not only unsafe for the general public, but unsafe to work in all day. The winds should die down into the evening so we could have a great day tomorrow. Keep posted and enjoy an indoor day. Lift tickets will be $29 for chairs 2,3,6,9,10, and magic carpet. Dress warm.

Bundle up out there this morning. The winds were howling up here last night but they are supposed to die down a little during the day. The people who braved the cold yesterday were given a pretty nice day of skiing. There was a lot of soft snow and good visibility. I would throw some super cold wax on the skis and boards and bundle up for today.

The skiing should be real nice today. The wind chills are around 25-30 below at the summit right now but they should warm up to 15 below by noon. It looks like today will be the end of this Arctic blast. I skied the backside in the morning and it skied really good. The North facing terrain has really been soft these last few weeks. Today I plan to do some exploring in the Hellroaring Basin. There is lots of fresh lines in there.

Looking for something to do this week, head to the Stube for the world famous BC/DC on Thursday night. These guys now how to rock out.

Bundle up, there is only 3 and a half weeks left. Big Dave

:biggthumpDear Pass Holders,

Early this morning, ski patrollers at the summit were measuring the actual temperature to be in the range of -15°F to -20°F, with wind gusts above 30mph. Our calculations put the maximum wind chill at about -60°F.

When it is that windy and cold, mechanical and electrical systems become much less reliable than they are in average conditions. Structural properties of metals and plastics change, and things that were once pliable become rigid and brittle.

We might consider allowing our hearty Montana skiers to brave these conditions for 7-1/2 minutes during a ride up Chair 1, but when you consider the possibility that something might go wrong with the chair lifts for reasons mentioned above, the risk is obviously too great. A relatively small problem with Chair 1 that left riders suspended for just 10 minutes with wind chills consistently below -40°F may have proved disastrous. A strong gust of wind that derailed the lift cable would have been even worse.

So, with all this in mind, we decided not to open Chairs 1, 7, and 8 this morning. As of now the weather looks like it will allow us to open them tomorrow. All the lower lifts, including Chair 2, were open today at a reduced ticket price of $29.

Our passion is for skiing, but our priority lies in the safety of our guests. We hope you can understand our decision to act on that priority.

Thank you for your support,

I think this is a smart move.I once got in trouble for trying to cancel lessons way back at Copper around 1990 for an ambient temp of 31 below.I had to teach the kids belonging the dimwitted tourons who still wanted them to take lessons. Not fun for anyone and super high risks as mentioned.

got cut loose from work at 12pm so up to the big. sunny blue skies,

lite crowds cause it still pretty cold, but it wasnt so bad. groomers

were still good at 1pm when i got there, dry chalky, slow, but very

carvable snow. closed the lifts down at 4pm, had a few beers at

the stube to end another great carving day. i wanted to ride the

186 coiler, but had to grab the fp173 in a rush cause the bindings

was on it...

after yesterdays rain i did not know what to expect today.

so brought the madd 180 and it was perfect for the conditions.

it was alittle wet icey firm, but soft enough so it doesnt make

any noise. with the lite crowds today i could let the board do its

thing, big arcs and let run pretty fast, had a blast!!!...

after sundays warm rainy day, then snow overnight, there were

two inches over a very wet hard packed groom. the early stuff

was good then the piles get pushed up then sets up and gets

pretty bumpy. one of the worst day ever! rode the amp5 softies

thinking there were more powder. the ungroomed stuff got set up

overnight with the rain and was hard to ride thru it. spring conditions

at its worst...

what a difference a day makes, colder overnight temps and

the new snow made for some icey firm groomers with one inch

of powder on top. should have rode the madd 180, but rode

the fp 167 which did a good job on the icey groomers. had to

take it easy and make big arcs and not push it too hard. the

forcast calls for more snow in the next few days, pray...

the season. i was going to ride saturday but instead i'm going to
