Yet another folded board

skategoat

Recommended Posts

Must be some kind of epidemic. I stuffed the nose on my Coiler. Folded it so bad that the nose of the board came up and met my goggles, cracking the lens. Remarkably, the core and top sheet did not crack, just the base separation that you see. Talking to Bruce and others who ride Coilers, this is a first for a standard build (ie. non-metal) Coiler.

No significant injury. Sore front leg and cut on my nose.

At least you could probably pick up a replacement at a killer deal right now. I suppose it's better than snapping it first day out next season...

Henry, glad you're OK. Boards are replaceable, bones are generally not. Shame it was the Coiler, though ... how long will it take to replace?

I guess with the snow getting softer we're havin to watch a little closer how hard we're pushin the nose. Thank goodness nobody's hurt yet. I've never heard of the nose hittin the face before, that's quite the bend...

Here it is again with cracked goggles for dramatic effect.

I wasn't going to post this initially because I didn't want it to reflect negatively on the manufacturer but after seeing broken Doneks and Priors, I realize it can happen to any board.

Luckily, I have had another Coiler (Freecarve) on order for quite some time now. I will now just pester Bruce so I can get my hands on it before the next season starts. For the rest of the season, I have backup boards but nothing that I've been riding as well as this Coiler.

I was riding really well that day and I spied a berm on the right edge of the run. Thought I'd try a big surfy heelside. Started the turn okay but coming out of the apex, I hit some soft snow. Nose plugged and I launched. I had enough hang time to think "I really hope this doesn't hurt too bad.".

I'm also saddened by the loss of my goggles. They fit me like no other. If anyone recognizes them and knows where I can get a spare lens, please email me. They are Scott ACS. 4-5 seasons old.

I think that's pretty much the issue, the snow is soft and people are pushing too hard on the noses of their board. I felt my nose overflex a few times this weekend (luckly didn't bury it like everyone else) and so I compensated and adjust my weight back more and rode the rest of the weekend without incident. I'm not a technique expert, but when I went to Snowperforamnce, I think Sean C. said folding the nose is probably due to being too eager/aggressive into the carve and diving your weight into the turn before the board (someone did this at the camp and separated his shoulder). While a longer board covers for this to a degree because it has a bigger "sweet spot," it should be avoided. Looks like I need to take a few more lessons. :D

Geez, I did the same thing friday coming over a roller and caught some soft stuff near the edge of the trail. Over the handlebars, landed on my head and shoulder. Good thing I'm fairly light, my head rather then the board absorbed the impact. :D

Both times I got flung (no injuries besides being thouroghly sore and no board or binding breakages luckily) I was wearing ski boots. Even in walk mode they were really stiff and I could feel myself just pushing forward with them and I knew I was getting alot of power to the snow. With my new sb124s it's alot more comfortable and I feel alot less likely to fold or auger it. I think lesser binding angles also play a factor in it.

Glad to see that it was your board instead of you breaking skategoat. I folded my Coilers nose two seasons back without any damage. Broke my collarbone but the board is still good...even after being runover by a Subaru. I was so convinced that it was trashed by the Sub that I ordered a second Coiler, but my first board still kicks butt. It may be another season before my new Coiler sees the snow.

I might as well join in too, I folded my Prior Pow-Stick a few weeks ago in heavy snow at Baker. At first I thought it was the nose being too soft (I always thought it was) and switched to an Undertaker, but when I looked at it later that night I saw it had delaminated on both sides, but didn't show any sign of cracking. This was a 07 model that I have had since early last season and realy liked it, Time for a new one with a stiffer nose.

It's tempting, but I really liked the Prior and think I may have another made. Send me an email, I'll think about it, but I already have 6 Swallowtails (I also said the same thing about the 4th, 5th, and 6th):) .

Ok I thought about it, I'll take the 188 :).

Sorry to hear about your board - that sucks. But, as a lot of people have said, better the board than you.

I stuffed the nose of a stiff GS board last spring, but not hard enough to snap it. Instead, it snapped me. Well, not quite that bad - there were no broken bones, but I hit the snow head first and compressed like an accordion hard enough to bruise my abs on my ribs. (yes, abs on ribs... I'm lucky I didn't break my neck.)

It's almost a year later and I still have a sore spot there, though I have unrestricted mobility, thank goodness.

At least snowboards can be replaced.

I knew a guy many years ago at Vail that snapped his femur doing that(on a fresh groomer no less).Ever since I have been careful not to get the front knee too extended or ,especially, locked ,especially in softer conditions.

I went over the bars on a soft spot on a WCR 185 2 seasons ago and Im pretty sure that I damn near broke my outer lower leg bone. It hurt deep inside for about 2 weeks (Im an idiot. I still rode) but doesnt bother me anymore...

scary how much torque can be created with our interfaces and boards

I have another theory on why we break boards near the end of the season. I think it's more us than the snow. By late February, we are riding harder and putting more stress on our equipment. All my best days of riding that I can remember are late in the season. All my biggest crashes too.

... and some of us are more willing to take risks when the season is almost over n :D

That is definitely a factor as people as riding more aggressively and there is less margin for error when they push too hard on the nose. Still it's rather difficult to fold the nose on firm conditions (late Dec-Jan) is it not? The nose fold I saw was in early December, basically the first trip of the season - I think I have a video of it somewhere.

...or frustrated we haven't got enough days in  (oh, piss and moan). I'd almost augured it a couple times lately on the soft-ish board I've been riding. I probably should have taken it down a notch in the soft conditions, but........ nooooo :smashfrea

it happend to me this weekend too with my Silberpfeil. Came over a roller and it dug right in. I don't know how i didn't wipe out but the trench ended up being so deep that it was still there hours after it happend. Now if I can get in that deep into the snow when I want to...

Glad you're ok though.
