Yes but not necessarily. Look at your trench. All the snow you've excavated has to go somewhere.
  2. Optical illusion. 1st and 3rd clips are a 171. I think the dark clip looks pretty tight? Despite the camera's typical effect of concealing slope, it's a steep section. I've decided I'm done with boards any tighter than this. If Kessler ever calls it quits I will buy like five 168s.
  3. I was a failure at getting footy this year (as usual). Here are 4 quick clips - @trailertrash on Sluice Headwall at Sugarloaf, myself on the same run but back in January when we have two sunsets per day, TT again on lower Spillway, @GeoffV on lower Spillway. Hope you enjoy all 65 seconds.

    worth every penny.
  5. Why is he swimming? And, apropos of nothing other than the thread title - the US Alpine Speed Championships were at Sugarloaf a few weeks ago, many high level ski racers in attendance. I was sitting under the chairlift watching @trailertrash carving, when a racer on the lift said "dope turns!"
  6. Must... resist... I think the point is that carving a snowboard and carving skis is very similar, nearly the same. Case in point, Ester Ledecka. Her snowboard training helped her skiing and vice versa. I think Ryan Knapton could jump on a pair of skis and carve right away, even if he had never skied before. I skied since age 3 and stopped when I started snowboarding at 13. I didn't ski again until I had kids and had to ski with them. At that time I found I was better at skiing than I was at 13, and I could instantly carve the new shaped skis, which didn't exist when I was 13. I don't think I'm special in this regard. That said, I still don't like skiing, and I don't do it anymore. It just feels weird and unnatural to me, and I am constantly worried about crossing my tips or doing my ACL. I'm sure I could practice it until these feelings went away, but I'm just not inspired to. There is no carve feeling like the one you get with two feet manipulating one edge.
  7. Absolutely. The best boards achieve the perfect harmony between length, flex, and sidecut radius. I've had a board that I felt was a bit too stiff for the sidecut radius. The sidecut wanted to go shorter, the stiffness wanted to go longer. (Err... you know what I mean.) I think boards that do not achieve that harmony will not be able to "perfectly" carve with their entire effective edge length. Which is basically what my article says too, among other points. (I can't get to that Canadian article without paying for it.)
  8. If you don't mind some trigonometry, there is an answer: http://alpinesnowboarder.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Physics-of-a-Snowboard-Carved-Turn.pdf
  9. MJD stance width measured in feet! Awesome east coast carving.
  10. She said they have a new liner, so I'll try that first. I will be keeping my UPZs to use as loaners and backup. I have a couple guys who want to try.
  11. He was also running a Tinkler plate. I don't remember exactly but it was either the binding or the plate that failed, or maybe both.
  12. I'm getting a pair. Going with the 120s because I'm running the stiffest tongues in my UPZs. I mostly love my UPZs, aside from the fact that I have to unbuckle them at the bottom of every run, so no real complaints there, but YOLO, mid life crisis, can't resist. It's cool that they offer all the different stiffnesses for the boots, tongues, and springs. That way if the boot you choose turns out too stiff or too soft you can change it to some extent.
  13. Super-G... why don't we do this anymore?? Looks like a blast. I think these boards are about 200cm? Courtesy of @www.oldsnowboards.com, with @Rob Stevens commentating! Ross Rebagliati GS: https://www.facebook.com/tinklerstoys/videos/2723054397709689/ Seems like singles GS was faster than PGS. Interesting how Fawcett dominated World Cup on stiff Cateks. I get the impression this would be regarded as impossible today. Mad respect!
  14. I would not call MS a knock off. It would seem they duplicated the old NW painstakingly and successfully, judging from their acceptance on the World Cup. If MS boots are not in the budget, there are other boots for less that have stood on WC podiums. Yeah more choice is good, and it's a good sign of the health of the sport in Asia.
  15. Knock-off products are a pet peeve of mine. If I bought these I'd spend the whole time wondering if they're really as good as the real thing. I don't like how the buckles have the toothed part on the cable. The use of the Deeluxe forward lean selector makes no sense to me because it prevents the ankle hinge from hinging. The price raises questions. Mountain Slope spent about a half million dollars creating their molds. They are still recouping that, hence the price.
  16. Time to delete some old attachments! Or move them offsite to something like tinypic.com. Let me know if you need help.
  17. If you don’t need a gauntlet, these are a great value: https://www.kinco.com/product/1958 they have other styles too of course.
  18. Agreed, but it's something someone can try to make their existing freeride board more carvey. It's probably a lot less than a new board.
  19. I think they might accomplish something similar to Gecko plates, by spreading out the footprint of the binding and reducing the board's tendency to fold right at the front edge of the front binding and back edge of the back binding. They seem a little soft though. I'm not getting the point of several of the possible configurations in the 3rd video. I don't think these or Geckos could be duplicated or approximated with carbon stringers in the board.
  20. I get this a little, but not enough to concern me. I think it comes from pressuring the boot cuff towards the nose of the board on heelside carves. I'm goofy so that's the front right of my right leg. Do I presume correctly you are goofy too? Perhaps you are excessively pressuring the boot cuff in that area on heelsides?
