  1. Have I been ousted? Has there been a coup? I will be up there on Sunday.
  2. BlueB it was your reply to my chime that left the bitter taste. As far as the attitudes; this came from a friend of mine and his run-ins with alpine riders. We have been friends for decades and would have to respect his views. I do have some good friends that I ride with and think that they are good reps for the sport. Just last weekend I rode with a know-it-all Richard (as you put it) and it gets under my skin. The sport is ever changing in gear/design and style. I ride with an increased angle in the rear because it is what works. I was born with extreme pigeon toe-ness. For the first two year of my life I wore a bar with shoes attatched to it and would get my feet cranked out to correct it (1965 and I had the first alpine set-up ha ha). I recall I ached and ached because of this. You must look at the one thing that I do not have to mess with-cant angles. I hope to get some pics tomorrow and actually see where my knees are with respect to each other. I do believe that this started as a knowledge gaining thread-but when the statements start that I am weird or incorrect about what I do is when it gets personal.
  3. I ride my board just fine thank you very much. I ride with more angle in the rear-so what. Anatomically for me it is better. I can rail turns just as well as guys less that half my age. I am not going to change because some of you have something to say about it being incorrect. I have been a boarder for 32+ years, I make my own and ride my own boards since '79. I have given a ton to this sport before some of you were even born. With that statement I am not demanding your respect-just letting you know I did not start yesterday. The original question of this thread was "what are you angles"-wish I would have kept my chime to myself. I really get the feeling that a good majority of you think you have it all figured out-I asked one of my friends that I went to high school with why he had not gotten into alpine snowboarding. His reply: (edited) "most of those guys names are DICK! Check yourself. Guys you are giving yourselves a reputation you may not want to live with, I sure don't. Be kind, be understanding, be accepting, you might learn something about someone else or maybe even yourself.
  4. Being somewhat pigeon toed it feels better. I have always had a steeper angle in rear than in front. I also believe that steeper rear angle reduces the amount of cant that is needed. I do not use any cant on front or rear bindings and I can tuck my back knee right into my front.
  5. Here is the secret: Barring a complete blizzard dump the conditions are perfect for the alpine boarder. I can always find a nice groomed run as long as I get up early enough. Good powder won't last a day on the normal mountain and second day powder is crud.
  6. So I made some measurements just so you could make some comparisons. Stance= 17" or 43.2cm 174 length board, Thirst 7 snowboard (I've made my own boards since 1980) been hardshelling since 1992. 164 effective edge 4.5cm set back to waist 16.7cm center of board to center of front binding 26.4cm center of board to center of rear binding rear foot 67* rear foot heal lift 3/4" of 19mm front foot 60* front foot toe lift 1/4" or 6mm no cant at all on front or rear foot, when I ride I lock my front boot in the most upright position and rear foot in the forward most lean position. I know you will get set up-I had serious doubts last season. I assure you I am having a blast now. Don't give up these boots are very good (a little cold though). I hope these measurements will help-I think they will help me since I really have never recorded any of the particulars.
  7. 17.5" center of binding to center of binding. if you are referring to me. I thought we were trying to help piusthedrcarve. Maybe that closer stance was what I needed. From last year to this I went from hating the UPZ's to liking them very much. If you want exact measurements I will get them. As I had said I have made no changes whatsoever in cant or lift from Raichle 123 to UPZ.
  8. I must say that last year I had a very difficult time getting set up-to the point that I gave up and went back to an old board and boots (same bindings and same set on bindings) and worked my way though a few boards with my old Riachle boots. Everything was fine. I finished the season with that set up. Over the summer I has removed my bindings and on the shelf they sat until a few weeks ago. I grabbed my new board, hovered the bindings over the board and put them-right-there. It is perfect. I have never had such a good time. I hated the boots last year and was moving all over the place. I really hated my Riachle boots because in a hard carve the buckle would come undone. The stiffer UPz's are what I needed. I wish I could say for sure what the difference was because I have made no changes to lift or cant. Initially I set the boots up on the center line of the boot and was forever changing position, angle. Set the boots up for center of the board-not center of the boot. I feel that my stance in a little closer that in past. I am 6'2' and my stance is 17.5". This past Saturday I was laying down the most extreme carves I have ever done. I know the set up with these boots can be frustrating-but there is hope.
  9. With respect to certain manufacturers who pay to advertise on this forum, you may contact me via e-mail MDM6665@hotmail.com
  10. welcome to Bomber. I can make you a custom carving board. THIRST snowboards is my newly formed third company. I have been making boards for 30 years. I have pics of my latest "7" on my fb. send me a msg I'll get you there.
  11. The conditions the day of N.I.C.E. at Schweitzer were very conductive to deep deep trenches. We ahd just gotten some veru good dumping on the days prior, it was cold and the snow had not been packed (honestly the weekend was not really the greatest conditions, I would have preferred much harder snow) we were definately digging some trenches-the snow was also soft. It was so cold you could have broken a finger picking your nose. I cannot believe resort are/will consider closing access to certain types of riders @*&k ME. If they do, take you business elsewhere and make it known that you do! How many carvers on this forum? almost 2,000? and over a grand for season passes-do the math.
  12. Yeah business is right. Resorts are in business, and kicking people off the hill because of the type of equipment they use and results thereof is risky. I don't think most resorts are going to want relieve customers of their visits. Time will tell. I do however remember the days when resorts did not allow snowboarders at all. When I take a headcount of people on the hill boarders of all types make up atleast half and possibly more of thier ticketholders. My business would not survive with half the volume of customers will thiers? I do what I enjoy and am not there to ruin anyones day. I could in soft shell boots carve it up about the same. I was at Scheiwter when this fellow had his tizzy fit-what an embarrasment he made of himself.
  13. Is that a definate maybe or possible no? to anyone interested is still avaliable-free ticket to Silver Mtn. on friday FREE FREE FREE day. Jez I feel like I'm begging. Good to first that commits.
  14. That does not explain more than one person is having troubles getting set-up. The size in comparable to the fit I feel with my old boots. Whatever; I am going to give a try again this friday.
  15. Just want to make clear. I have one pass available-I will be using the other.
  16. Just won free passes to Silver mountain for this Fri 07 JAN. Contact me if you would like to go, no strings attatched just don't have use for two passes only good for the same day. Pass is only good for Fri. 07. Would prefer to ride with a hardsheller-but you don't have to ride with me if you don't want. Contact me if you would like to go.
  17. There is no way I could ride a board "duck" I am pigeon toed and my legs just don't go that way. it is too bad that there can't be a choice. Hardshell is very expensive and could not expect rental shops to nut up and outfit. The very first snowboard of mine in 1980 had no bindings. i rode in powder and it had a 2x4 in the front and an a 9" sanding disc for the back foot. I could ride it quite well. THANK GOD FOR BINDINGS AND BITCHIN GEAR!! Too bad I am 45 and can feel the age creeping up. That is why I hardshell and feel the option should be available to the older crowd, There is way more to the sport than breakneck amplitude and spine twisting tricks.
  18. well I would have to agree with his frustration. I spent about 6 runs yesterday trying to get set-up and at the very best is a compromise. A very uncomfortable compromise. I feel the boots are not that stiff, i get a ton of heel lift ( I can feel the liner moving up and down in the boot and I am cranked in) I went back, forward, together, apart, more angle, less angle, bla bla bla. I could not set an edge and when I did it felt wrong. I guess that is what you get after the same boots for 15 years. I really liked my Raichle boots. They were the warmest boots I have ever had even in sub 0 temps. I needed an up-grade and am confident I will get them set but was hoping it was not going to take 2 days to do it. I don't agree that the bed is shorter though. I had to reset my bindings longer to make the fit and they are the same mondo size as my Raichles.
  19. I intend on being there for all the days. I have offered my help at booth. I live south of Sandpoint and will have room for one (sorry small car) and can pick-up and give ride to Schweitzer. Don't know at this point if I will be able to offer a place to stay. I would like to but I have a young child and don't know how this would work. I have offered to make available demo boards (only alpine, possibly one all mountain) for the event, will see how the next few weeks go. I will not be providing bindings or boots. I hope to make this happen with N.I.C.E. but have not heard from Boardski skibum for about a month. Looking forward to seeing lots of Alpine riders up there!
  20. You are welcome-It was my pleasure.
  21. Thanks Carvedog. I have deticated a lot of money, time and effort to this sport for a long time. I LOVE SETTING MY EDGE AND CARVING, it is the greatest feeling. Always makes you feel good when you come upon one of those blank stare skiiers that stops you and says "That is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen"
  22. And yeah 30 years ago, would put us at 1980. See I'm getting crap here too. Believe it. I have thought about this hard and I started in 1980- from a wierd tangent, so it may be.
  23. wish I had some of the wierd stuff from back then-that was a long time ago. I do still have some snowboards that were prototypes for Park West ski area (now The Canyons) in Park City, Ut. that we made in about '89 (still have one that has never been mounted and one that went to Transworld snowboarder magazine) and still have a few earlier than that. Have left over from my second company (Backside snowboards) about 3-4 from the early '90's. Think I have around 13 or so still in very rideable condition. I'll see about some pics. I have been seriously been thinking about making some new ones. New company name -Thirst...? for the third and first. Maybe we should start a new thread...kinda off base here.
  24. I guess you'd figure after 30 years I would become somewhat calloused. last season I caught flack from a fellow boarder. He would not believe that what I was riding was a snowboard-but firmly believed it was a ski. here's one from the 80's "what kind of board is that?" Its a Powder Board, I reply. "who makes it" We reply (my brother and I) "we do". "can you ride it" he asks. "of course we can, we made it". "It can't be any good if you made it" he says. "why not" we ask. "because you didn't buy it". So my brother and I after fastening in let him go ahead of us on this cat track that fed to a run at the end. My brother and I looked at each other as said "should we go-sure let's go" We caught him about half way down and passed him going at least twice his speed on either side of him. After we passed him we said "yup we made it" bloodtypezx10r refers to my sportbike (Kawasaki ZX10r). I ride track days and instruct for a track day org. It's all about the turns baby!!!
