  2. I barked up that tree with BV on the, well, BV(SC) chair last weekend.... he just can't build them wide enough for those of us with softboot tendencies and violin-case sized feet. i'll just have to get one for my hardboots....

  4. oh man.... where do i start? both occasions teaching the weekly teen group (albeit a few years apart) 1st - its dumping snow, i'm going nuts wanting to go tear up trees, so i send the kids ahead and just duck into the trees off the side of the run to put up a little rooster tail. Get a little pow wobble and catch my thumb on a small tree, snapping it back against the back of my hand. Broken thumb. 2nd run of the day. 2nd - beautiful jump in the park. Hit it all morning. Take the kids in for a little bx training in the afternoon and show them how not to get big air off a big booter. little do i know the freestyle ski team got in there over lunch and turned it from a cheese wedge into a straight up to the stars kicker. "Here kids, watch how i soak it up and stay in control.. ". Cleared the landing, broke my nose and goggles on my front knee, torn tricep as elbow hinged over the other knee, and... another concussion, this time while wearing a helmet. Yet the parents kept sending the kids back...... i could write a book on this topic.....

  6. I had the pleasure of meeting him (and the rest of the B-Side team, in matching purple outfits) at the Off The Wall can-Am at Talisman in '90 or '91... as a kid at the time, it was like meeting Wayne Gretzky at a pee-wee tourney. The man inspired a generation. And still does.
  7. my wife is in love with the prior brandywine for an all-mountain soft deck she can carve around on. I've got the MFR and after demo'ing all the new burtons this weekend, i still think it's my fave.

  9. it never fails to amaze me. i rode the chair with a kid i saw throwing 10's like it was going out of style, but looked like he was 90% out of control between the hits and started chatting with him about his set up. He told me intentionally detunes both his edges, so his board is less 'catchy' as he straight lines into a jump. i asked him how he gets up the walls of the halfpipe and he 'just sorta does'. So i guess we cant blame them. they ride detuned boards that just sorta work, so they just sorta cant carve. I'm sure if i took the edges off any of my boards i couldnt carve either. and i still couldnt throw 10's over the 60 footer either.
  10. Learn to enjoy it!!!! I've got a 185FP with a 16.5m scr, easily the stiffest of all my boards, that i don't even take out until mid-feb when i feel like my quads and cojones are sufficiently massive. It scares the bejezus outta me. And I love it. It's like getting my bike wheels caught in a street car track headed straight for the trees, then commit, change edge, and try and hold on for the next one. I need to get enough leg strength in order to stay on top of it and not get tossed off the back, but once you start clicking turns on it, it's more fun than most roller coasters. just dont let it intimidate you..... long boards with big scr's smell fear and will hand you your ass if you let them. lastly i am in the deuce-deuce club (220lb+) and that baby i carry helps keep it in check.
  11. whats the drop-dead date for registration? very interested, but very difficult for me to commit this far out due to the nature of the other stuff I do when not riding... until then, I'm a big maybe.
  12. I have the forward lean set at 3 (haven't played with it much), but will try a 5 for a run or two and see how that goes. I've been on hardboots since the early 90's (pink koflachs and elfgen bindings) and this is the first i've experienced this kind of bruising. i have not tried removing the plastic spoiler either. I will take a closer look at that next weekend too. Thanks for the help.
  13. Thanks for the pointers. I'm going to try adding some padding across the back of the liner with blue camping foam and duct tape, extend it up a few inches past the existing cuff and see if that makes a difference next weekend.
  14. thanks. definitely not the shins - right across the back of my calves, and it traces out the top of the boot liner's cuff. Will try and post pics tomorrow when i get back to the big city and reasonable internet speeds. no chatter. no big heelside spill. cant figure it out. my soft boots (burton driver-x) come higher up my leg than the suzuka's do and i was able to ride in them all day today without any noticeable pain. That said, it still hurts like a _____ when i accidentally touch them against something (i.e. car seat, dog's tail etc).

    Ouch

    Just got back from three days of riding, but unfortunately, only two on my hard boots. I picked up a new-to-me prior 175 WCR over the summer and had a blast tearing around on it. As the second day progressed, my calves started to hurt. By the end of the day, I took my boots off to find massive bruises across both of them that traced out my boot cuff. I couldn't even put the boots on this morning. I ride deeluxe suzukas. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? I've had the suzukas for about three years now and didnt have the problem before, although I can't think of any time i spent more than a full day in them. Is it time to get a new set of liners or a bts system? are my novelty-sized cycling calves no good in these boots? binding angle adjustment? (currently running 60/55) suck it up and treat bruised calves with heavy doses of labatt 50? any help would be appreciated. E.

MUD - thanks - i'd love to see the papers if you ever came across them.. see what i've missed over the last few and why those cervelo guys think they can charge so much for such a gorgeous frame.... As pointed out in a bunch of repsonses - the sheets typically have multiple layups of fibers that handle different loads - it may be that the CF topsheets are best at at handling the torsional stress through the deck than the 'pure' 3-point bending. and to clarify - i never suggested that CF cannot take a compressive load - it can (through the matrix), but it will never have the strength it can take when loaded in tension (through the CF) - similar to how concrete can typically take 4x the compressive failure load than tensile (hence the addition of rebar) and this always has to be taken into account when designing the part/board/etc. It just seems that if the top of the board is under a compressive load, would it not make more sense, both from an economical and design standpoint, to use a topsheet with better compressive qualities? Or search for this aerospace CF MUD refers to? Is that what Madd uses? Does anyone know if the CF on Madds is for longitudinal or torsional flex?
  17. that would be awesome.... i've seen a Volvo A40D balanced on its hood emblem at the bottom of a hole once, and that was, well, interesting.... but to huck one off a kicker!!!! now thats thinking!!!! (careful - axles snap easier than you'd think)
  18. Does this mean the threads are able to handle compressive forces, or is it still loading the glue/epoxy matrix? I had experience doing fatigue testing on CF rebar developed by a Japanese firm that used a resin to resist out-of-plane displacement - we almost used the stuff to build a-arms for our SAE car - and it always ultimately failed under compression, in the matrix. Despite the ability to prevent the out-of-plane displacement, and the fact the strings were bonded to the matrix, we were still, effectively, 'pushing limp string' and loading the matrix. Now... this was about 7 years ago - has something changed? Last i heard nano-carbon tubes could handle a compressive load, but it was difficult making one over a few (mu)m long.....??
  19. I looked at this as an option when I was buildng CF hockey sticks and didn't think it was worthwhile placing it on the top of deck. CF is effectively a bunch of strings and some glue. In tension, it the strings are loaded, but in compression one is effectively "pushing strings" and all you load is the glue (unlike glass fibers, that can take the compressive load). My understanding of it is that when loading a deck, the bottom half is in tension and the top in compression, similar to linear spring, but I have never personally done any modelling to substantiate this. I'm not denying there would be a noticeable difference by adding sheets to the top of ones deck, but think it would be mostly due to i) changing the overall geometery of the board, i.e. it's stiffer underfoot because it's now thicker underfoot, and ii) the glue/epoxy holding the CF's physical traits as opposed to the actual CF itself. If anyone has done testing, or modelling I would be interested to know how it works. Otherwise, it seems like a lot of $$ for CF when a less expensive, more effective alternative could be used.
