Got out on the homemade 10mm's on saturday - dont know how i rode without them before. Not so much a leverage thing, but more of keep my toes out of the snow thing. A riding buddy remarked it looked like i had mounted my hardboots to it. Now I need to find thicker cutting boards and continue the experiment.... As an aside, it got me wondering why there aren't any BX specific bindings on the market yet.... if theres a market for big $$$ kessler's & oxxess boards... one could think theres a market for something built stiffer, big highbacks with an integrated riser that comes with 25 or 30mm bolts...?

the prior mfr 176 has a 11m scr, 135cm effective, and a 26.3cm waist.... if you keep an eye on the board rack you can usually grab a gently used demo for around $400-$450.... because as pointed out - who rides those giant freeride boards anyway?

+1 on the Prior MFR - I rode a 172W for 3 years and am now on the 176W - traditional camber. Love it. Cant say enough good things about it. As far as chop is concerned, it doesnt hop or feel light, or jump over it - it just plows through it like a freight train. it becomes a non issue. It's real responsive to changing the the binding stance across the inserts to adjust for conditions - if you just set-it-and-forget-it you're missing 75% of it. Crank em' back and its great for backcountry pow, centered for all mountain groom carving, duck out the back a bit when it gets choppy, widen it up a bit for park/pipe.... the only other board that came close was the NS titan TX... but it didnt seem as natural (to me) as the prior. I'm still waiting to try rocker/camber/decamber versions.

+1. If they just got the sidecuts up in the 11-14m range i would have bought a titan tx last summer. great boards, some of the best made out there imo..... but i get hesitant riding it at full speed... they just get too twitchy. i'm told you get used to it and can really learn to love the tight tail on it, but i'm not going to gamble a paycheck on that. Here's to hoping they make a kick ass BX board or just offer some longer scr's for the mach 10 riders in the near future....

I have not tried those. Ended up jigsawing & dremmel-ing a set out of cutting boards. Picking up bolts tonight to ride them Saturday. Figured i'd rather spend the $20 to see if i like it before spending $100 (crazy CDN money) on proper ones.

After sleeping on it, I think I'm going to buy the cutting boards from yesterday and give the 10mm home-mades a shot to give me a baseline before spending on bigger/newer/proper ones. Thats the idea that kept me awake last night. similar to the TD set up where an elastomer base is bolted to the board with a disk and some frame, then a plate or something is bolted to the frame to avoid any shear loading on the bolts. And I kept coming back to how the TD's do it. It probably wouldnt be that tough for Fin to figure out some plate (or plates of varying thickness, or height where it mounts to the cant) to mount on the TD3 cant & bumper that we could bolt a soft binding to..... until then - low tech. simple works best - it's just not always easy.

did some shopping around on my way to hockey... looked at a lot of cutting boards. My problem is that I can't seem to find any over ~10mm thick. So, for about $20 and a bit of work I could throw those together but am not convinced the 10mm will be enough. When I hold it, it just seems too thin. Starting to consider the palmers again. Has anyone (preferably with novelty-sized feet) ran CO2's on the palmers? Does the toe ramp flex over the end? Has anyone ridden the 20mm or anything over 10mm? Finally.... has anyone actually owned a set of the edge risers? Any feedback to share? They dont look all that substantial, but I'd rather hear from someone who actually rides them. Thanks.

I'm concerned about the palmers for the same reason - specifically the extending toe piece on the burton binding seems like it will hinge over it as it is not that structurally integral to the rest of the binding leading to too much flex for a solid feel or even failure. I contacted a local plastics guru and was told the 5/8" UHMW poly sheet I was looking at will run about $550 for the smallest sheet they sell - 4'x10'; and that using it as a laminate with, for instance, some elastomer or damping material will be difficult. I am told the UHMW is awful stuff to work with in the sense it is not weldable and finding epoxies that work with it is difficult.... so back to the drawing board on that one.... specifically - does anyone have experience using the different heights? I'm still trying to figure out what thickness to go with and at $400-$600 per sheet depending on thickness I don't know if this bit of experimentation will ever get off the ground if i've got to drop that kind of money. I'm going to look at cutting boards at walmart later, metric ruler in hand...

I'm looking at buying or making a set of risers for my soft set-up. Size 13 feet are pretty unforgiving. I'm looking specifically at the Palmer PLS's and the edge risers, or doing the plastic cutting board approach. The main issue i'm trying to get my head around is the height - they seem to vary from 10mm to 20mm, but without any frame of reference, I 'm not sure which way to go. I understand what the increased height does, but am not sure how it translates on-hill. I see most people riding them have experienced the 10mm's, but has anyone ridden the 20mm's? Do they get too twitchy or otherwise? Does bigger = better to some limit? Finally - it's for Burton CO2's mounted on a Prior MFR 176. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Soft Bindings For Freecarving

Ditto. I usually run a about a 20-30F and the rear changes according to conditions. Hard groom (and for whatever reason I dont have my hard boots on) its centered and about a +10R. As conditions get windswept/choppy, or I'm running trees i'll drop the angle down as it's more important (to me) to get the board around, and carving becomes secondary to not hitting something. This however bears in mind the rule #1 - no overhang so anything under +6 to -6 is impossible for me on my board (176 prior MFR). I've found myself running about a -6R all the way back on the inserts when i'm running cats/trees/etc. I've got so comfortable with it, I've even been riding that set up back in ON and can carve pretty well on it, run BX etc. If I want to carve, I get the right tool for the job, and that always has hard boots mounted on it. I can ride plates in the glades at revy... but not nearly as much fun as the soft set up on big pillow lines. I'd love to try a dual. or an eliminator. or a kessler bx. or a donek sabre.... and i'd do so if cash flow allowed or opportunities presented themselves. the 'niche' they seem to target has me as a well planted resident.

I rode a set of C60's mounted on a T6 and on a custom X with the system back to back with standard bindings and was impressed with the increased feel and the lack of dead flex spots under the bindings. At 220+lbs I didnt notice any more binding flex on the EST's than i did riding the usual variety. If it didn't mean I had to buy burton everything, i would probably be on a set. Heck - i'm still upset with shimano over bike parts for similar reasons. They're no vist plate... but it is a step in the right direction. I do agree with the above comments though - i've ripped bindings clean off boards (old joyride experience) and i couldn't help but wonder as i fiddled with the little threaded washers in the channel. I'm content to let the flock sort out the engineering teething issues on this one. Until it's offered on a prior, neversummer, palmer or any other soft-boot non-burton board its of no use to me.
