Highway 330 to get into the San Bernardino Mountains will remain closed throughout the winter after recent storms caused the road to buckle.
"The force of the water coming down the mountain side was so great that it washed out underneath the road itself," said Darin Cooke, a Caltrans spokesman.
The road caved in Dec. 20 at the 35-mile marker of Highway 330, just about six miles north of Highland Avenue, Cooke said.
"It was so much in such a little period of time, it couldn't hold," Cooke said.
Cooke said geologists are assessing several portions of Highway 330 for possible pavement failure.
Highway 330 is the main road to Big Bear Lake, Arrowhead and Running Springs.
Motorists traveling to Big Bear can take Highway 38 through Redlands or Highway 18 from Victorville.
