  1. One more unlisted clip from the same day... Conditions were not as good up high but the videography is cooler.
  2. The Pitch Black of course, left of the tree island just below Stoke base. Way steeper! Can't tell in the video but this is one of the steepest sections on a very steep mountain. I have a lot of boards, this is one my Contra 169s, 12m sidecuts, 296mm waists, this is the stiff one. @dredman and I developed that trick together back at Targhee circa 2009, but he gets full credit for the second spin. My jaw dropped the first time I saw him do it at ATC in Aspen!
  3. The sun Finally came out! Had to share this clip with you boys (it won't be public until the edit is complete). Best conditions, best part of the mountain (very steep, narrow, and concave!), best turns I can do. Perfect day!
  4. Add more rotation and more compression on the heelside. Try putting the back hand on the front knee through the (heelside) turn and remember to rotate from the hips. Angles are steep, but okay if that's comfortable for you. You might like a little more splay though, 21/36 for example. 51cm is very tight, try 54cm or more. I ride 55-57cm stance width on my soft boot carvers, I'm 5'10" tall with a 31" inseam.
  5. Pretty obvious you need an 8RW, or maybe a tesi... For real? OMG! Does Mark know about this?
  6. Nope. Ten years of climbing sandstone cracks worked for me... Gymnastics, calisthenics, jiu-jitsu, or situps maybe?
  7. Thanks West! I'm so honoured by this award, I want to thank the academy and all the little people who have helped me achieve my dream turns. My secret is very strong core muscles...
  8. I need 12 degrees minimum in the back foot to get consistently smooth heelside turns. At 9 degrees I get some occasional chatter. Above 12 is all good too, but less playful feeling. In part it's the comfortable all mountain stance that keeps me riding soft boots. I'll go up to 21/36 if I'm booting out at lower angles (on boards that are very stiff or too narrow for the stiffness and scr). My attitude is to keep my angles at the minimum required for perfect carved turns. Steeper angles are more awkward. I don't know why some Asian riders are running upwards of 30/45, it doesn't work for me in soft boots, it's just not comfortable. May as well go to 55/60 and ride hard boots! For my body, 15 degrees of splay works well in soft boots. I recommend you try 15/30 instead of 21/30 but every body is different so experiment a bit. Experiment a lot, actually; I've been carving full time every winter since 2006/7 and I still make stance adjustments! Latest discovery: less forward lean equals less boot out...
  9. Huge difference. Get something with titanal from Prior or Winterstick, maybe 2cm wider at the waist than your mondo point boot size to start, you'll know when you're ready for something wider. 10m scr will yield a good intermediate turn shape. +12/+27 is plenty steep for a good carving stance, go steeper only if you're booting out. Get risers from Palmer or JJA for more leverage and clearance. Also stiffen your boots up and get stiffer bindings... Now you're carving!
  10. @ShortcutToMoncton My next video will be a "how to carve" thing with all my best tips... Here's a preview: -Keep your shoulders level by crunching in the obliques -Bring your back arm forward, on heelside it can touch your front knee or boot cuff to find the right amount of rotation and compression -Keep your butt over your rear highback, even touching the highback for extra compression, not hanging out over the edge I also had trouble at first with heelside chatter on my first softboot Contra, then I discovered that I was just riding too fast for that board. Slow it down to smooth it out. To slow down you may have to turn tighter; bend more in the knees, rotate more (like bring the back hand to the snow as well as the front), and push harder into the board. Trust the board, it's a Coiler! More compression is better (to a limit of course) and will increase edge hold. My mantra on scary terrain, whether steep or tight or icy, is always "get low, slow it down, hold any turn". My straight legs are an expression of style, I would advise you to bend more if you're having trouble keeping the edge in the snow. Once that feels easy play around with minimizing your movements and getting taller. When the riding is great I love to feel the extension right from my toes through my spine and up through my neck, like a surfer just pushing hard on the board for a super tight bottom turn! It's dangerous though to ride too tall, small bumps can have a large impact on your spine if you're not in a position to absorb them. Good luck. We should be able to shoot the last sections of the "how to" video as soon as the sun comes out and the powder gets groomed flat. 50cm fell this past weekend so it might be a little while...
  11. We put some effort into editing this one... People are actually watching my videos now after the Ryan Knapton promotion from MCC. I started the YouTube channel just to share video with you guys but now I'm getting carried away. Only one more video is planned for this season though; ride more film less.
  12. Holy shit! How far do you expect to lean?
  13. For a 125lb strong rider with small feet: I'm thinking in the range of 155cm, 9m sidecut and 26 waist. An old Coiler BXFR maybe or a small Oxxess BX board? Check your wives' closets please, tell 'em I got cash...
  14. What's the weight range or stiffness of the board @steven?
  15. @tenguspengusI'll bring the bindings, 10.5 should be no problem. I can still get store credit on these but I'll take a little less if it's cash. Retail is $600 usd, I'd be happy with $450. @ToastThese are probably not what you want, two of them are pre-2006 and the Oxxess is a big stiff race board. Buy something out of the demo tent, you'll be happier.
  16. This is beautiful! Is that real wood veneer or a printed topsheet?
  17. Three more boards that I don't ride... F2 Speedster 163 $150 Burton Coil 173 $150 Oxxess 185 w/ UPM inserts (I think) $400 - (Calling @barryj) All in good condition
  18. I seemed to have raised quite a stink with this comment... I don't pretend to speak for Bruce, only the big man himself decides how many boards he builds and for whom. Apologies to anyone who was upset by this glib remark.
  19. One of a kind Coiler Contra in perfect condition. 194 length, 21 waist, 19m sidecut. Slower and more comfortable ride than one might expect from such a big board. T4 194 C 020 JC 5.8+9 Can ship from Montucky next week. $600 plus shipping.
