I've tried and I've tried to talk them into that, but they refuse. Therefore, I'm stuck either teaching them or letting them learn on their own.

I have a friend who wants to try snowboarding, but refuses to take a lesson. They insist on having me teach them. For many reasons this is a terrible idea, but I'm not going to change their mind. Therefore, how do I teach someone to snowboard who's never strapped a board on before? I figure I'll show them how to strap in, push around, and get one and off the lift. Then we'll go to the top of the bunny slope and I'll have them do toe side from one side of the run to the other and then stop (crash). Then I'll have them to heel side back to the other side and stop. We'll keep repeating this for a while. I'll also emphasis bending the knees and not the waist and also keeping weight over the front foot. As for turning, I don't really know how to explain it to someone. I thought that maybe I'd tell them to ease the edge pressure on their front foot to get the board to start pointing downhill, and then to kick their back foot around to change to the other edge.

The ones with the old straps. But it wasn't an issue with the straps, it was an issue with the uppers having a huge volume.

I'm still trying to digest all the numbers. However, this test doesn't cover the volume of the boots' uppers, and I've found the upper's volume can make a huge difference for how the boot fits. For example, my legs are wiry (some might call them skinny) and my first boots were the Deeluxe SB and even with the boot downsized my foot would move around because I could never get the uppers tight enough. I eventually solved that by adding two layers of boot fitting foam to the inside of the uppers. My own testing found that Head and UPZ uppers were a lot lower volume for a given size than the SB uppers. I didn't test the AF.

My friend has issues with his feet and needs a pair of the widest soft boots made. He's also like his boots as stiff as possible. Any suggestions?

I've tried both Deeluxe and UPZ, and I think they have the same sizing. I used a 27mp Deeluxe which was the right size for me bu the heel was too wide, I then downsized to a 26mp Deeluxe which had a LOT of work done to get it to fit, and then I tried the 27mp UPZ which fit perfectly.

Regardless of how many checks it has in the positive column, THE most important thing is it fit her foot well.

My measurements indicated the Head fits a larger calf than the UPZ, while Deeluxe fits the largest calf. In terms of heel width they go Deeluxe, Head, UPZ from widest to narrowest. UPZ boots have extra holes on the uppers to move the buckles to accommodate a larger calf, and I have seen them comfortably worn by a dude with large legs. If possible, have your wife try on both Head and UPZ and see which one fits her best. If you can afford it, buy both and return the one she doesn't want.

I was going to start a new thread, but I'll just post here instead. Before last season I bought v.2 of the Donek plate and mounted it on my Coiler VSR 172. I rode it all last season (as much of it as there was) and most of this season. Several weeks ago I removed it, and am not planning on putting it back on. While the plate did help smooth things out, I just felt really separated (for lack of a better word) from the board and had a harder time getting the board to do what I wanted. It was faster, but it wasn't nearly as fun. I may try the plate on my Donek Razor with my soft boots, but I'll probably end up selling it. At some point in the future I'll probably try a plate again, but for now I'm just going to enjoy the Coiler as is. I'm 160 pounds without gear, and ride mid-Atlantic.

I use a BTS and ended up cutting a lot of plastic out before it was the BTS controlling the flex and not the shell. It was worth it.

Anyone know why they closed?
