1xsculler
Is laydown extreme carving practically necessary in order to carve on steeps?
mennanov
The steeper the slope the bigger inclination angle you need to close your turns. If the slope is really steep and narrow you have no choice, but have an extreme inclination angle, thus a laid down turn. If we are talking about pure extreme carving, then yes, it is necessary on the steep slopes as it helps to control your speed. Otherwise it is not necessary, but it's so much fun :)
jng
Steeper slopes need more edge angle, not inclination angle. Edge angle can be achieved by a combination of inclination and angulation. Angulation keeps your center of mass over the edge improving edge hold on steeps. So no, extreme carving is not necessary for carving on steeps. Just watch some professional racers and see how many adopt an extreme carving style.
Aracan
+1. Extreme carving is not necessary for the steeps when you define almost full extension of feet and body as one characteristic of EC. It is fully possible to carve the steeps with your body very compact and close to the board, as long as the board is tilted up high enough. nils
yes, not necessary, but this is when EC is very fun, getting your body over the edge face first in very steep slopes, reaching below the board after the edge change, waiting in confidence that centrifugal force catches you and holds you around the turn. EC on lower angle slopes is ok but you loose speed pretty quick... N
Neil Gendzwill
1xsculler, I would say it's the opposite. EC-style turns have the centre of mass as far away from the edge as possible. This means less pressure to the edge than a turn made with body angulation, so it is more difficult to hold an edge when making EC turns. If EC turns were the best for steeps and ice you would see racers use them.
softbootsurfer
No it is not, Anticipation is what is needed Edited March 17, 2016 by softbootsailer
Corey
But the EC style is sooooo much fun on steep terrain. It kind of comes naturally at the bottom of the turn as the snow gets in the way of your body parts.
BlueB
Racers are normally not on super steeps. More like steep blue. And no, you don't have to EC the steeps, but it's fun :) Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk
