CarvingScooby
CBC – Thu, 3 Feb 2:30 PM EST ..A group of disgruntled skiers has turned to the internet to try to persuade people to boycott Sunshine Village over the recent dismissals of several safety patrol staff. A page on the social networking website Facebook — titled Support Ski Patrol wronged by Sunshine Village Ski Resort — had almost 6,000 fans on Thursday. Doug Firby, who is the associate director of communications Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort, confirmed there were several dismissals during the Christmas period. Ski patroller Craig McArthur told CBC News last month that the dismissals happened after patrollers disciplined a skier — whom he alleged to have connections to the resort's owner — for entering a closed area. "We are raising awareness to the importance of ski patrol, through the example of Sunshine Village Ski Resort's wrongful dismissal of all its senior patrol and snow safety staff," the Facebook page reads. The group — which is distributing T-shirts with the slogan: "The winter of our discontent" — has gained the support from as far away as the United States. California-based Mountain Riders Alliance is endorsing the boycott. "For the short term, I would stay away until they address the allegations," said spokesman Jamie Schectman. But according to Firby, guest numbers remain strong at the resort despite the attempt to organize a boycott. And half a dozen ski shops contacted by CBC News said they haven't heard from many skiers and boarders refusing to ski at Sunshine. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/boycott-sunshine-facebook-group-urges-20110203-091703-568.html Gosh... what wud u do? They are just doing their job...Any one knows from different perspective and gladly to share? So far I'm happy with the new management in Cypress. Things change the good way in all aspect & specially toward carvers. RT
Allee
Full story from the ski patrol side here : http://www.supportskipatrol.com/Sunshine_Village_Ski_Patrol_Support_Site/Welcome.html Sunshine is one of my fave places to ride, especially late in the season because the snow's so good, but I'm really thinking about heading out to Louise for the rest of this year. This is all a real shame, especially as Ralph Scurfield's not an idiot. He's a well respected businessman with a long history of community service, so this whole thing really makes you go "huh"? Neil Gendzwill
Wow, sure shows you different parenting styles. If that were my kid, I would have instructed the patrol to escort him off the property, same as any other idiot.
skatha
It really is a no-win situation...don't escort him out of the area and risk losing your job if he dies.....escort him out as per resort rules and you lose your job.... I noticed that the kids who had parents with cash seemed to be the biggest insufferable idiots when I was in HS. Ten years later, they were the biggest bums as they didn't know how to work for a living... Good to see that effect wasn't restricted to Texas or the late 70s.... Charmaine
Did this protest ever get big enough to affect the resort, or was it mostly a statement of discontent? I am just hearing about it for the first time, and I am confused as to why these people got fired for doing their jobs. Did the resort end up changing the rules regarding boundaries after this? Completely perplexed. Also, is Scurfeld an owner of other hotels? Does anyone know if he is affiliated with the Wyndham Hotel Newark Airport? Allee
Scurfield's still in charge, his kid is likely still an a-hole, life goes on as normal. They've gone through at least 2 marketing/communications managers since then, interestingly enough. The patrollers that were fired are pretty much all working as guides in the cat operation out at Fortress, which started up last season. Shame that so far this season they've had the best early snow. I still try to avoid going there, but RCR's making it damn difficult at the moment, with half of Nakiska still shut because they've been too busy with Alpine Canada and the ski cross to make snow for the masses. Yeah that's the only down side for me. I refuse to go to Sunshine (my own small boycott I suppose) so it's either LL or Nakiska for day trips. I've had great early season days at Lake Louise so far this year though so I'm not crying about it. Not sure what would make me consider going back to Sunshine again.
