  1. Later ones had a wider, conforming upper strap. They show up occasionally on ebay. Good bindings. I still use an earlier version. cheers
  2. I agree with you. My hardbooting is decidedly low-fi - low-cuff, three buckle Scarpa AT's and Burton Freecarves with an assortment of Burton bindings. In twenty-plus years of carving - mostly on East Coast hardpack, I've never injured a knee, ankle, etc. As I've grown older and heavier, the soft stuff makes makes even more sense. Want to ride til I'm 80+ and am counting on a forgiving interface to get me there. cheers
  3. Size 11 Burton Freecarves - old, low-cuff, 3-buckle, hardboots yours for cost of shipping. Used thermoflex liners in em but may be able to find original, unused liners if you're interested. Happy surfing
  4. Just to let people know of my positive experience with member "thump". Burton Freecarves he sold to me inexplicably ping-ponged from zip to zip for almost three weeks. Throughout, he handled my frustrated inquiries with patience. Thanks, Thump :)
  5. 2002 Beetle with 1.9 TDI. 41 mpg of cast-off fry oil. Quite an entourage of dogs when stopped or slowing down.
  6. If I'm not mistaken, a wide Panzer file - sold by many of the tuning suppliers often discussed here - will make short work of your problem. My limited experience indicates that these coarse files remove a lot of material, so you have to be careful. More experienced tuners on this forum may want to jump in with comments on the Panzer. I have a 164 Alp that's slightly concave, and it's never bothered me. Hope to add a 171 for next season (are ya listnin', Derf?) that'll probably also be concave. A slight base edge bevel might reduce the tendency to "hook" when ridden flat? cheers
  7. Have ridden it on everything from ice to cord to powder and have had a blast. I did put SnowStix on it for added, variable stiffness. Wish the 'Stix were still available. A couple of boards drilled for them could replace an entire quiver. Unfortunately, I'm told that Tinkler worries about the necessary drilling for retrofitting - liability I imagine. They're available only as original equipment on his boards, I think.
  8. If I can ever save up the $$ for one of Sean's masterpieces, it'll have a redwood graphics base with your Hula amore fabric topside! What a hoot!! Happy surfing...
  9. A couple of never-ridden longboards have sold for $200-plus on ebay recently. Can anyone comment on the performance of this year's limited-release 163? cheers
  10. See recent topic in Carving Community... brrrrr
  11. If you make the Mini switch, please post your thoughts after a few days' use. My only Mac experience was many years ago. The innards were used as a "controller" in a proprietary non-linear video editor. (Today, a run of the mill Apple could easily outdo that early, very expensive video cutter.) Owned a Shuttle some time, ago and it didin't last more than a few months. Only major problem I've ever had with a computer. Today, I still do a fair amount of video and audio work. Am much tempted to buy a maxed out Mini for a stand-alone work station. Good luck and thanks
  12. Some 'o those boats now have high velocity "wave" machines. Grab a softy and start slicing. This time of year, the break probably won't be crowded...
  13. Do any decent, Sorel-type boots come in a 16? If so how about a good "supportive" pac boot with Burton three-strap Torques for added stiffness? Not ideal but might get him on the road. cheers
  14. Think these were supposed to be the softest of the soft ski boots 2-3 years ago. I'm a size 12.5 so not holding my breath to find a pair. Best of luck
  15. Heard on NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! "Arhtur Schiff, namer of the Ginsu knife and architect of the (in)famous telemarketing campaign, passed away in September. Mr. Schiff, considered a marketing genius, authored such iconic phrases as 'Slices and dices', 'But Wait there's more!' and 'Operators are standing by!'" It's not known if Mr. Schiff originated the "Rails like a..." simile. I really need snow...
  16. Have mixed old Burton Step-Ins rear with Raceplate front. Worked fine with most of my boots, but not AT's that I now use most often. In softies, I'm hoping to use my Burton Torque 3-strap front with a (sorta) stiff Flow step-in rear on a just-purchased SuperModel 181. that is if we ever get mid-Atlantic snow this year...
  17. Walking through Winterplace cafeteria wearing plastic, lace-up Kastingers - "Hey, man, are you a telemarketer!!?"
  18. Been saying this for months, but my plan is to learn process by home building: short twin tip board for my 10-year-old relatively short pair of X-Country skis for my wife. (Camber difficult - may horizontally lam and route top/bottom camber into blank) pair of of alpine skis for a friend, and finally a 174ish all-mountain carver for myself. Due to $$$ and space limitations I'm probably going to vacuum bag. I mill my own wood and have the following species available - yellow pine, poplar, red/white oak, and sweetgum (an interesting wood tho it has a "trash" reputation.) Also have access to hard-to-work hickory which looks like it would make really springy stringers(?) Hoping to build a solar wood kiln large enough to allow one-day curing of epoxied sandwich. Temperature can be controlled within limits. Strictly non-commercial ambitions. cheers
  19. I'm an Alp devotee and happily ride a 164 that's 1/16 + concave. So might be interested anyway. (No flaming from the purists, please.)
  20. I'm trying to @%% the little Mother 2%%^^'s. But since this will stray some from carving, I'll move it to the Off Topic forum. Hint - the first installment involves an old fart and frost on a galvanized roof...
  21. Can't believe I posted that.. I usually start any day with both Scarpa Lasers (AT boot) in walk mode. If conditions are good, I'll soon lock em both down, but if less than ideal, I will leave rear unocked so I can more easily tuck rear knee forward. Sounds painful, I know, but for me it seems to work. Powder to the People!!
  22. Thanks, as always, to the great board minds of BOL
