  1. As with carving board choices, I think it comes down to personal preference and style.

For me, I will never ride something shorter than 170 on a pow day…my go to boards are my Tanker 201 for almost everything and Tanker 186 when I want something a little more playful.

I will not deny that many of the new short wide/area displaced boards are fun (I have ridden many of the Japanese snow surf designs and copies: Moss’, Gentem’s, Wand, EGF, VectorGlide, Elevated SurfCraft, etc) they just do not suit my style of riding as I love longer effective Edge and am a firm believer in length over width displacement.

Additionally I normally do not ride in terrain where I am only going to find powder…would be great, but just not a reality. So I need a board that rides powder well and then suits my style of riding when the snow conditions change or the powder gets all tracked out.

I do find it interesting that North American riders all seem to gravitate towards American industry trends while European and Asian riders get better choices because companies like Dupraz, Pogo, Virus, Fenix, Swellpanik, Good Boards, Rad-Air, Stranda, Gentemstick, etc still build bigger boards in addition to shorter offerings.

Pray for snow always and ride what suits you.

Kind of a shitty picture but… closest one is an old Prior 4WD 169, not sure the year but one of the early ones. There’s a ‘94 Asym Air 163 and a ‘99 (I think) Tanker 2K. Plus the first board I rode with hard boots, an ‘89 Gnu Race Room 178, still with the Elfgen bindings.

What up Y'all,  I've been lookin hard at the 170 W.  Any other input on the Strandas ?

    Thanks

They are beautiful boards with incredible construction.

@lordmetroland review is spot on about the cheater series. I own the 200 (it was built based on my request and input) and 177 and love them both.

Mats has great customer service too.

    cheers,

    Boot suggestions?

Lots of choices out there that are great for Softboot freeride/freecarve.

    Deeluxe Edge

    Burton Driver X or Ion

    Head 8

    Nidecker/Flow Talon or Tracer

    Salamon Malamute

    Vans Verse

    DC Judge or T.Rice

    Ride Insano

    K2 Thraxxis

It is really going to come down to what fits your foot.

I used to love clickers, but I would not trust any of your old gear…

I am personally using Burton Driver X and Union Atlas FCs for my traditional setup  as well as Burton Ion StepOn and StepOn X bindings. Love them both for different reasons.

good luck with your search but go with what fits you best.

cheers and pray for snow ❄️

There's a remote chance that my wife and I might move from Bozeman, MT to Bellingham WA to live. What's the carving at Baker like?

    dave

    Dave,

Mt Baker is not usually a good carving mountain for a few reasons:

    1. Too much snow…powder boards are recommended.

    2. The last few years the grooming crews have been pretty terrible at laying consistent cord…it is often a mixed bag of ridges and inconsistent lanes.

Stevens Pass and Crystal are better carving mountains in Washington, and then you have really good carving at Cyprus and Whistler across the boarder.

    hope that helps,

Getting in was aok.   Reaching the Step On's  minuscule release lever was an uncomfortable streeeetch for me and it doesn't seem they have made any changes or improvements to the latest editions.

No changes for the most part for next year except the Ion and Photon SO boots get Vibram soles, a new Genesis and Escapade StepOn binding and new toe hook 2.0 for all bindings…from Burton guides, “we should all be able to purchase/acquire the new toe hook 2.0 to upgrade any older bindings.”

  7. So after two ankle strap failures from two different companies since selling my StepOn setup, I have decided to go for a second round with the StepOn X and Ion StepOn boots.

I already machined down some screws to give me more forward lean and added power straps to the boots and am now just waiting for the 2022 bindings to be released as Burton has said they will make the new Toe Hook 2.0 available to previous StepOn owners (probably have to buy them, but I am ok with that).

I also intend to make a couple mods/additions to my boot liners for added lateral support.

looking forward to this winter and trying out the mods I am planning. Will post feedback after getting back on snow.

    cheers,

    sandy
