Sandy, could you just quickly outline the application process? Is it indeed a light activated 2-part resin? And is a sunny day a requirement for it to set?

Yes, something in the compound requires direct sunlight...the good news is that you can do part one in three hours and then wait a day to do part 2 if you run out of sunlight before you can get the second application applied.

DPS has done a good job of updating their website with clearer procedures, but the overall process is pretty simple, it is just the curing time that takes forever. (3 hours for each application).

I had what I considered a lot of liquid remaining on the second application but was assured that it is normal to have some liquid/wet base area remaining that you can just wipe off with a towel.

After the first application (part 1), I had no wet areas on the base at all as the board seemed to absorb most of the initial application after the 3 hour cure time.

    Soooo.... did anyone try this?

So I have five days of riding on my Maverick Cheater 200 with the DPS Phantom base treatment and here are a couple thoughts:

    1. Application is truly around a 7 hour process, so be prepared to follow the directions and spend some time.

    2. They are not kidding that it takes a couple runs to work in...board would not glide well until after the 3rd or 4th run.

    3. It works well on cold snow, but I am not sure that it works better than if I had waxed the board with a correct temperature wax.

    4. After 5 days of groomed snow riding without re-waxing, like I would normally do, base still looks good and glide is smooth.

My initial thoughts are that this will be a great application to work with good waxing. I say this based on other comments that are on the Phantom FAQs about how the application can be used with wax. I think that for someone who travels a lot for riding and may not have the space available to bring their own waxing gear or might not want to pay a shop to wax their boards that the application is a good thing.

I also think that I will need to put a lot more days on the board that has the application on it to see how it works after say 30-40 days of riding.

    cheers,

    sandy

SVR and Mats may be somewhere in Japan powder boarding this month, not sure on the specifics?

    Pat you have good intel??

Mats and I will be in Hakuba until Sunday probably riding mostly at Happo and Cortina ?

Then Mats will be at Interstyle (one of the Japanese snowsports shows) in Yokohama (stop by if you are there) before he heads to Hokkaido.

As for carving in Japan, this time of year is best for pow and as someone else stated, finding hardboot gear in Hokkaido is difficult.

    cheers and pray for pow❄️

is that avalanche w/lofos an asym?

had the 186 diablo pre insert. and the 93 shalom grocer from snowboard connection in Seattle.

the rest just makes me feel unworthy:eek:

The Avalanche is not an Asym (I wish it was!), it is a standard Accel 180. Those bindings were pretty crazy, but worked well with Koflach boots.

I am looking for any size 2004-2005 Tanker (black base with red wings or red base with black wings) or Tanker OS black base with white wings or white base with black wings).

If possible I would like to get a 187, 192 or 200, but I will entertain any size and if the board is in good shape I will entertain a trade for a New in plastic 2012-13 Tanker 200 as an even deal.

I know there are a few out there with members of this forum because I sold two of them to members here and RJ sold quite a few to BOL members when he was running ExoticBoards.

    Cheers and thanks.

Damn, Sandy. Looking at this quiver I can't shake the feeling that you're the version of me who made better life choices...

If I had been smart, I would not have sold all of my Tanker 200s the first 3 times ???

My softboot stance angles are usually 30 Front and 15 Back. Can the NX2 highbacks  be rotated?

I am not sure, I have never tried to rotate them.

i ride front +30 and rear +9 and never felt the need to rotate the highbacks like I did on my regular strap bindings.

the only thing that I did is swap the left and right highback supports as this basically accomplished the same thing with the asymmetric shape of them based on some advice from Slopestar.

both the standard NX2 and the GT have the asymmetrical shapes and can be moved left or right to basically emulate rotating the highback of a conventional binding.

I'm having a great time riding this board -- with softboots.  With all the interest in softboot carving I thought it might be appropriate to post this here.

At 169cm, it's a short board in comparison to the rest of my quiver.  The Shorty is billed as a high speed untracked powder board.  Unfortunately this winter hasn't delivered the goods yet...  But my local resort had some fresh snow these past few days, and I had a blast carving and making short pow turns, and going through trees.

I haven't read all the technical specs, so I'll just describe it as I see it.  The board is relatively stiff, has camber between the feet, some tail rocker, and a big rockered shovel nose.   The sidecut doesn't reach all the way in the front -- so when I'm carving, I can see the nose ready to grab the fresh snow and to lift me to the top.  The SCR feels long -- maybe 11m?  The board is very stable at speed, and I had some huge fast turns today on it -- building speed to shoot up and over into the powder in the trees along the slope.  Super fun.  With the shorter tail I can turn it on a dime, so surfing narrow lanes of untracked powder, slaloming around trees, it's a joy.

Wish I could bottle the stoke and share it, alas that technology isn't out yet...  More about the board at <https://www.strandasnowboards.com/product/shorty/>

    Really cool review Tom,

i love my Cheater 200 and Maverick Limited Edition Cheater 6’7”.

Mats makes some great boards and I look forward to seeing your review once you get the Shorty in some good powder conditions.

i hope to ride with Mats in Japan next month. Can’t wait to ride my Cheater 200 in some Japow!

Thanks Sandy.  I ordered NX2 from evo. (evo is having some great sale on boots and bindings currently)  Since my use of the softboot boards will be 60% carving & 40% ground riding, I wanted bindings with some flex that matches with current boots.

By the way, have you tried K2 Kwicker or Burton's Step-on?  Especially Kwicker would be so convenient for backcountry Pow riding.

Awesome, I hope you like them. Take a little time to play with setting them up as it will pay off in the long run.

i have tried the Kwicker system. I loved the clicker setup, but the problem for me was always getting good boots.

I have not tried the step-on but I like the concept but again the boots will be the issue for me.

    cheers

    Thanks Sandy,

The regular NX2 is what my eyes are on right now. I ride mostly in Mid Atlantic area so will not ride on bottomless POW like you and my board will be 99% on ground  (carving and ground tricks) so feel of board is important to me.   For hardbooting, I even ditched convenience for getting more board feel.  Old Phiokka bindings were great and still ride on them sometimes.  My search found Flux bindings have much less cushions and more of direct feel of board.  So still undecided between NX2 and Flux XF.  ;-)

No worries and good luck with finding what works best for you.

On a side note, Mats from Stranda (formerly Maverick and formerly of Alpinepunk) loves the regular NX2 for freecarving and freeriding powder and groomers.

    cheers!

    Thank you all.

I am not after strongest/stiff bindings but more of medium/stiff flex with more of board feel.  I recently rode softboot boards and hated buckling straps (spoiled from plate bindings).  I was hoping to get some answers for the board feel but I doubt that any of recent bindings can give that due to thick base foams.  Again, thank you all for good advice.

Piusthedrcarve, I agree with you that the foam takes a little bit away from the direct feel of the board, but having the metal base plate of the NX2 does help and the foam and rubber act more like the e-ring on the TD3.

As for the stiffness issue, I like the metal heel cup on the NX2-GT and NX2 Spectra as it does not allow the binding to flex a lot from side to side.

If you are okay with a little flex (it really is not much more than the GT), than the regular NX2 bindings will work great.

I am not a fan of the hybrid strap and I think you lose some feel (and they can be harder to get into), so I would recommend that if you go the Flow route make sure to get the Fusion straps.

    hope that helps.

    cheers,

    sandy

Damn Sandy, those are pimpin'! If you're going to ride those, you'd best be coming to the mountain dressed like Huggy Bear. An excellent looking set-up. If that Cheater 200 is as crappy as it looks, give me a shout...

Agreed on that. With the Flows, the L and XL are very close north-south; east-west the XLs are much more roomy, allowing big feet to make use of the quick entry/no ratcheting feature that sets the Flows apart.

I need a furry hat and leisure suit ?

Cheater 200 is awesome, and most of the guys that I have been riding with lately are using the NX2-GTs as well.

  15. I agree with slopestar, XL is the way to go.

i am using size 10 Driver X boots and the XLs work great.

I opted for the Nidecker&Flow collaboration NX2 Spectra bindings this year as they still have the metal heel piece (and a funky color), but was able to get a set of GT highbacks on mine.

i love the Flows for the even pressure over the top of my feet as well as the no heel cup, built in cants and excellent response.

  16. My addition above plus the othernew addition from Standa Snowboards.

Mats Drougge (also from Alpinepunk) builds some great boards and has rebranded his company Maverick Snowboards as Stranda Snowboards to reflect more of the Scandinavian influences on his designs and riding style.

The new red Stranda Cheater 200s are awesome? and if you are looking for a great selection of boards designed for all levels of snow surfing, please check out the new website at https://www.strandasnowboards.com/

    Cheers and pray for snow.
